I explain the technique behind the analog joystick and explain the difference to digital joysticks and gamepads. This is especially important for MS DOS games that you want to play on a retro PC. For this you need an alalog joystick. Only this can be connected via the game port on the sound card to the PC. Have fun with the video
My favorite analog joysticks are:
- Gravis PC GamePad
- Gravis advanced joystick
- Gravis Pro Pc GamePad
What is your favorite analog joystick?

I cannot speak about the Microsoft Sidewinder working on MS-DOS machines but the Advanced Gravis PC GamePad works on both MS-DOS and Windows platforms. Gravis was the first to figure out how to create digital GamePads that connect to a PC game port and Microsoft later tried to copy its functionality but they may not have gotten everything right.

I was at least not able to use a gameport MS Sidewinder under Dos. I guess that at the time of the release (of the Sidewinder Gamepad), Microsoft had already abandoned the MS Dos platform and was only interested in the development of Windows. What was the biggest competitor of Gravis Gamepads / Joysticks in the 90´s?

@VintageTech Many competitors built PC gamepads after the introduction of the gravis, but I would say "Interact" were the most prolific. They started somewhere in the 1980s as "Quickjoy" and made digital joysticks for the Atari ST and Amiga platforms before renaming themselves somewhere in the mid90s. Notable Interact controllers are the "makopad" which is a hybrid digital/analogue gamepad, the "Hammerhaed fx" the first twinstick gamepad for the PC gameport, and a variety of "Propads" which came in 2,4,6 or 8 button variants, the 8button also came with a USB adapter.

So you showed how the different types of sticks work and how to differentiate but I watched the whole video waiting for the content promised by the title: HOW TO FIND. I was expecting insightful suggestions on where to go online to purchase a good MS-DOS compatible joystick and/or what to search for.

I source the most of my vintage parts from E-Bay or similar sites. That should be the best source, especially if you are looking for a Stick with an gameport.

I owned that clear Gravis joystick when it first came out and I think it broke. I just bought it back, again, on eBay two weeks ago. It's a bit clunky, but I still love how it looks.

I bought mine recently. It is in a very good condition, hope it lasts for some time. What is your favorite Joystick for MS DOS Games?

VintageTech I have two Tandy computers, SX and TL/3, and I actually enjoy using the Tandy deluxe joysticks. (Even though most people don’t like them.) The stick itself is small and easy to move just with your thumb on top of it, almost like a modern game pad stick. These will only work on Tandys because of their proprietary joystick port.
