I usually just slice to the BPM and then add Eight EQ and add a HPF to about 200 Hz. It’ll filter out the kicks and the snare will sound more like hi hat. Then your programmed drums should overpower the sample’s drums.

Good tip. This is usually a good way if you can’t remove the drums!

Awesome! I love the stream of consciousness. Seeing an artist’s brain work in real time to decide how they want to arrange a track is super helpful. I think arrangement is one of the skills of music production, and that’s for sure something I’m working on!

Serato Sample streamlines a lot of this (stem separation & key detection/pitch shifting). I think I bought it for $49 years ago and they keep adding new features.😊

I like to pretend I'm actually digging in crates like the hip-hop forefathers did. So when looking for songs to sample, I load them in Serato and with my turntable in absolute mode play songs until I find something I like then sample it. And I sorta feel like I'm really sampling from vinyl. It's extra work, totally unnecessary and add's absolutely nothing to the finished beat. But mentally I almost feel like I'm doing more than just playing back a ALAC file and sampling it.
