Pocket water fishing is fun. What more needs to be said?
This is a (non expert) breakdown of how approach pocket water situations when fly fishing.

Thanks for this solid advice. I am 64 and my favorite places to fish here in NorCal are the mountains. It's physically demanding. Which is why I am trying to get in better shape. Thank you for scaring and motivating me!

Great video and a great reminder, especially for those of us fishing the spring creeks. There have been numerous times that I’ve bypassed trout because I thought nothing would be sitting in that small little pocket behind a stone in a riffle, only to come back later and find out I was wrong yet again. Keep up the great work out west and tight lines!!

Yup. I just recently realized how good those shallow water pockets can be. I would always skip the shallow water and go straight to the deeper runs and pools but now I never skip anything shallow if it has fast water and a few rocks.

Fun fact. My golden stone patterns in the GSMNP are probably the most productive. In your defense I make them look like a couple other things :D I have seen some monster golden stones up in some of the higher elevations of the park.

Fishing pocket water is one of my favorite ways to catch trout, as well as to introduce a beginner to fly fishing for trout. Pocket water trout are not finicky. If they are there, they don't hesitate to take a fly. Pocket water is much easier on the nerves than flat, slow, spring creeks!

No doubt. I dumped in the Madison last year and it scared the shit out of me. It was early and it was flowing good. I never used wading stick before in my life and just dealt with it, but after last year I started carrying one and I can't believe how stupid I was for not having one sooner. It makes everything easier and safer.

That is what the camera tripod is for! Those are just the shots that don't get shown a whole lot haha I really do think they have merit! Especially in free stone
