The Chatterbait is one of the best bass fishing lures of all time! Its easy to use, even beginners catch bass on them. So why is one guy consistently catching bigger fish on a Chatterbait than everyone else?
Are you the guy that's catching them or the guy that's wondering why someone else is?
Matt takes us to the core of the Chatterbait technique in this in-depth seminar-style video on chatterbaits and bladed jigs. From the baits themselves to an underwater look at the Chatterbait trailers, we're going to examine every aspect of chatter bait fishing.
We don't stop there, we're also going to discuss rods and gear for the technique. Matt examines both the finesse and power fishing approaches to Chatterbait fishing and explains the merits of both.

@Donald Martin We catch drum all the time walleye trolling up on Green Bay. The first couple are exciting, but once you realize they aren't 20lb walleye, it's a drag to have to re-set all the lines on that side of the boat. Definitely a great fighting fish, a 5lb drum behind a planer board looks like a big muskie hit it, usually pulls the board under and then you have to fight that as well as a fish. The running joke is "your bobber's down" when you know a drum hit your buddy's line.

Great video again. You're flat out the best informational fishing channel on youtube! One thing I would LOVE to see from you is how you would adjust all these techniques you've talked about to fishing from shore (lake and river). What techniques just won't work from shore, what will work that won't work from a boat. Most every informative channel is from a boat, and most every channel from the shore is just a vlog.

Do you guys have any thoughts on the Z-man/Evergreen Freedom chatterbaits? For grass fishing and weedless applications I've had some decent success. The feature that really keyed me in on that particular design is the ability to change out the hooks in different situations, or when the hook is dull. Just wondering your thoughts

The curve in the blade is what helps keep depth. The blades with holes in them are called turbo blades. The holes are supposed to alter the thump and action of the blade because of how the water will not only pass around it, but through it too... you end up with a tighter wiggle in your bait. Also the reasons you were talking about a heavy rod vs a moderate rod is exactly why I throw all my chatterbaits on a Dobyns Champion 734c. You get the best of both worlds... has plenty of backbone when you need it to stick the fish, but being a Champion series you have that ever so slightly slower action compared to something else like the Extreme line. Been using it for about 3 years now and don't think I will go to something else anytime soon.

Ive found fishing braid around cover and flour on gravel/sandy bottom. The braid around cover is unmatched to feel grass and rocks and wood and can rip it free with a small wrist snap as to not jerk it away. Just covering neutral bottom though I love the fluoro and you can just lean into your hooksets. Anyways great vid learned a ton (no surprise there)

Good Video.....I have the same set up as Matt. Medium Heavy Dobyns 734 but I use 15 lbs Copolymer line.....I think the copolymer is a nice all-around option. Strong enough if you are in some cover but a little slower ripping out of grass. The 7.1 reel is my choice too but I sometimes have to remind myself to really slow down on tough days. A single tail grub is also a great trailer if you want to mix it up. The Zoom Fat Albert works well in single tail form

Micro guides, I'm still trying to figure out the big advantage. Immediately I thought about the leader knot being an issue. I threw one the other day and it surprisingly wasn't a problem. This was 50lb braid to 12lb flouro. Bigger than 12 I could see being an issue with weakening your knot or getting hung on a flip cast.

awesome Matt , there is a third option on trailers though, worms , I use zoom big dead ringers, Mag 11's or ol' monsters, especially big dead ringers. I get more vibration from the jig using worm trailers, For me it's always the #1 option and most guys don't do it, another reason to throw it..but as always great stuff

Great video! I really love these in depth videos about a type of bait. I started to use chatterbaits not long ago after Brett Richardson told me they could work well for me. In the last years I think he caught most of his northern strain giants (a lot of bass over 5lbs with some over 8lbs) on chatterbaits. He dead sticks them a lot with some hops and fishes mostly at night and usually in water over 30ft deep... I think I requested before more videos about fishing from the bank for trophy bass, specially in smaller lakes and ponds where sunfish and crawdads are the main prey, but I request it again. :)

Based on your suggestions I will be getting a 7”2 MH Mod specifically for the chatter bait. Maybe I will ask for a jackhammer for Christmas.

Hello mates... Just a few questions regarding this whole chatterbait subject... I found your presentation very informative and for me very useful information... I write this from a land down under named Australia...I custom make my own tackle for various fish species that swim down here...We have a bass species that's very similar to your white bass....I noticed the use of a popular chatterbait design you guys in the States have taken too being the Jack Hammer... I noticed the blade has been bent backwards from the top ....What is the benefits of having a blade bent in this fashion? Also I see I have emulated some of the gear that you guys use for example Rods... I use a 7ft hybrid glass rod from the Powellco, company in the form of a Diesel model...It's a mod-fast medium heavy rated for 8-17lb line and 1/4-3/4oz weights. I have paired this with a Pflueger baitcaster geared at 6:3:1 and Spooled up with 15lb flurocarbon line straight thru...Like I said I make my own tackle and so it is with my jigs, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits...I tie my own skirts up on a fly vice using either bucktail, marabou, or polar flash Mylar handmade skirts... I haven't found the need to use trailers inside my skirt presentations as yet but found your segment on that subject very interesting as well...I also make modified chatterbait blades from size 4 Colorado blade flattened out.Anyway I digress.....Could you please enlighten me as to the bent blade please before I start trashing good blades for no advantage... Regards B.J. BJs Custom Baits Australia...

Hey guys, out of curiosity how do yall set up your leader length wise? I normally go just long enough that I don't spool the knot so like 6ft but I've heard people say not to do that for various reasons (I havnt had any issues with it). Any who, be cool to hear yalls reasoning on the matter. Great vid as always guys!

Great info keep up the good work .What can you do about affordable jig rods on the lower end for those of us that can't spend $100 to $130 bucks. Thanks.

What is that connection piece called on the picasso shock blade? I use the shudderlicious chatterbait and it bent on me. Its my personal favorite and instead of just tossing it I'd prefer to replace that connector

New follower, new fisherman, content is amazing. Video idea, terminology that you find normal but a new fisherman may not. Example pop the real…. Crank bait??

Great video lots of helpful info. Keep up the great vids. The jackhammer is great bait that catches fish but cost to much. Ican do the same thing with the shock blade pro fos less 17.99 at Tackel Warehouse for the jackhammer. 9.99 for the shock blade pro. i can almost buy 2 shock blade pros for the price of one jackhammer. Just because somthing cost more doesent mean its better.

Did you touch on weights.... I've always thrown 1/2oz, yet people say the 3/8 is the way to go on the Delta. Guessing helps keep the bait up on the flats... What do you think is the best weight for the Delta... Thanks
