My friends and I recently got back from a Chinook salmon fishing trip to Port Angeles where we basically spent the whole time trolling and jigging near Ediz Hook.
Port Angeles is one of my favorite places to fish for chinook salmon as they are usually plentiful and the approach is very simple.
In this video I break down some basics about the fishery, and what we did to find success and I share lots of footage of our trip and many of the clip popping take downs!
Feel free to drop your questions in the comments section!

Hey there, Chuck here. I've been enjoying your vids for a good while now, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I use the knuckle busters too and love em, but I've also been looking for a good line counter. So did i see Okuma Coldwater you may have been using? If so then what size? Thanks

Thanks Chuck! Yes, I use the 303 I believe.

On the right side of the boat in the video what kind of rod and reel is that? I’d like to learn more about it and if you recommend it
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife Месяц назад
The rods are all Okuma 10’6 herring rods. We like to run daiwa mooching reels on the downriggers especially when going to deeper depths. We also run Okuma Coldwater 303’s

Hey Kyle Awesome day! Hey have you played with other downrigger clips? I see your using the Scotty clips. I am testing out the chamberlain release. Still trying to dial it in and not really sure how it will do in the saltwater. My problem was reeling down to get the slack out on the scotty releases and it popping off. I have tried braid and mono for my mainline. Also tried just using a loop of mono under the clip on my mainline. Any tips on the scotty clips: are you putting the mainline deep in the clip or just to the scotty line....Great Video. Thanks!
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife Месяц назад
Thanks! This is actually the one I like to use: amzn.to/3PC5twE My friend severed the downrigger braid and we lost everything so I had to fall back to the Scotty release clip

Awesome video thank you. My son and I live in Port Angeles and are newbies to chinook fishing. I understand to chase marks, but generally speaking, how deep are you dropping the downrigger ball in how many feet of water? is there a general depth contour to follow on the troll?
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife Месяц назад
There is a good depth contour to follow. The most typical and productive is that 90-120' line. You might be chasing marks from 50 ft down to 100', it just depends. Thanks for watching and appreciating the video!

What does it mean to be a "feeder chinook" is that a nook that is actively feeding?
@mj96jones
@mj96jones Месяц назад
Yes feeder chinook means a fish that's still thinking about food and less about rivers and spawning.. my understanding is the closer to there home river they get the less bitey they are.
@PNWBestLife
@PNWBestLife Месяц назад
I use that to describe chinook that are more akin to blackmouth and may not be migrating back and are on average smaller fish. Typically 22-26"

@@PNWBestLife yeah, WA Sport Fishing Rules for 2024-25 are different from the app - books says you can keep hatchery chinook, the app says otherwise but doesn’t list it as an emergency ruling….strange, maybe the dates are wrong on the app….?
