i replaced my friends 10 speed cassette with a 11-42 tooth one.. he had a short cage shimano zee derailleur and it worked perfect with the new cassette .there was no need to replace it, so my advice would be to try your old derailleur before buying a new one or a longer cage..just dont forget to adjust the bb screw.👍
Figured i'd add my very recent experiences in the event that someone has the question. 2018 Rocky Mountain Pipeline, Alloy 30. Stock was a 30 tooth up front and a 10 spd, shimano HG-500 11-42 cassette. Replaced the rear cassette with a sunrace wide range 11-46. Kept the same stock shimano deore derailleur (clutch type) and stock chain. After watching this video I do need to ensure that there is enough movement in the derailleur to account for chain growth on full compression of rear suspension tho. No need for a goat link either....though clearance between the largest ring on the cassette and the upper jockey wheel was very close.
I've just installed Shimano Zee FR with 11-42 casette (1x10 drivetrain). In theory short cage is too small, but it works just fine for all gears, even with a bit of reserve on the biggest cog.
I'm running a set up like this on both my bikes. 32 tooth front and 11-42 rear cassettes. I can climb most anything and only occasionally run out of gear on long fast decents. what is the benifit of going to a 1x11 over this setup? besides getting one less tooth with a 10-42 11 speed cassette. I can see the benifit of the 12 speed 10-50 because I could run a 34 or 36 tooth front chain ring
You can buy bigger front gear like 34 or 36. 34 will not effect your climb. But 36 can be effect just little bit. Two of them speed you up on descents.
hi just watched vid ,... i,m trying to change gearing from 8 to 10 . iv put air bike 42t cas on an 8 speed hybrid / gravel ! ... can i keep the middle crank ? ..... have put on shimano 10 speed derailleur on ? ..., live in wales ! meny ups n downs
I have just bought the Sunrace 10 speed 11-42 cassette. My XT Shadow+ medium cage hits the largest ring with the B screw all the way in. I have a 30t ring at the front. Can you suggest a cage which will work? The derailleur is a Shimano XTRDM786GSL medium length cage. Thanks
Hi I want to replace my 10s cassette 11-36t with 11-42t shimano deore m6000 cs-hg500. So, do I have to replace my chain or rear derailleur? Now, I am using KMC-X10 chain and Shimano XT RD-M781 SGS Shadow Type / 10 Speed rear derailleur? Thank you
Hi there I have a Boardman road com I want to fit a 1x11 change ring and a 11/40 cassette Can I use the rear mech and cassette with my drop handlebar leavers Thanks
Ian G yes you can! We’ve even done a 2x9 Shimano Sora drivetrain with a 50/34 and a 11-40. You really just need to make sure everything is compatible. What shifters and how many speeds do you have?
You have a technical error when describing the limit screw for the smallest cog! Read the Shimano manual for confirmation. The jockey wheel is NOT meant to be in alignment with the smallest cog. There is a 1mm off-set by the derailleur outwards.
If you have a 7 speed cassette with no spacer then it's a 7 speed freehub, in which case the only way you can fit a 10 speed cassette is to buy a 10 speed freehub unfortunately.
nice explained as always, but whats the sense in spending 200 bucks in outdated 10s components when you can get a full SLX or NX group for the same price. The old 10s Shimano rear derailleur also doesnt work very good on 42t cogs.
Aren't you going to horrible chain slap with this set up without a clutch mech or chain guide ? I'm looking to upgrade my 2009 Marin rocky ridge to this set up and want to avoid any pitfalls if possible.
True it looks kinda funky but that is not because it hasn't got hydroforming 😉 It is because it use the old designs you had back in the days when bikes were made of steel 👍 Looks really old school so I like it even if I think that the modern look is way cooler 👏
Yea i still got a rigid wheeler 5800 that is like 25 years old and its made from super thin cromoly tubing. I would even guess that it is around ir even below 10kg.
