Here we demonstrate how we fit two hammocks onto the deck of our 30ft sailboat. There isn't much room to lie down on our bow but with the hammocks we can 'hang' around there in comfort! 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ bit.ly/SBRU-vid⛵
⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ brings you the sailing shenanigans of Chris (British) and Rossella (Italian), as we sail our 30ft sloop. We make sailing vlogs of our cruising adventures and share any tips and tricks we can along the way. After all, sailors are one big family!

Good vid. I put some cloth (a towel or t-shirt) under the line that ties around the furled jib. That saves some wear and tear on your jib's sunbrella.

Hi Roger, thank you for your comment and suggestion. Fair winds, Chris and Rossella 👍

When you tie a hammock like this, be sure you do not tie it over or near a joint in the aluminium profile of your jib furler. Those joints are not meant to be stressed in that direction. Guess how I have learne that lesson ?

I have a fair amount of experience using a hammock for overnight camping while backpacking. I'd suggest that you look into a fabric (e.g. nylon) style hammock rather than the fishnet style. I think you would find it more comfortable, and it will still compress into a fairly small bundle for storage. --Peter

Hi Peter, great tip, thank you! I really fancy the idea of sleeping in a hammock and will definitely try it at some point. No doubt the hammock type you mentioned is more comfortable for sleeping. Isn't it funny how certain interests seem to attract the same kind of people - I also love hiking and wild camping, as well as climbing. I guess whether you are in the mountains or some other wilderness, or out on your boat, it's all about appreciating the beauty, peace and power of nature... Fair winds, Chris (& Rossella) 👍

I would worry that the pull of the hammock at one concentrated spot on the aluminum furling extrusion would bend or distort it. Am I just a worry-wort?

@ChangeOf Heart funnily enough I just bought one like that today from a shop in Sweden called Biltema, it was labelled as a boat hammock, solid sides to keep out the breeze and a mesh bottom. Really comfortable I'm going to try and rig it up on the sun deck of my boat

Is the Jib rather safe from being damaged by the hammock line or would it be better to put some material around the sail? Thanks for the tip!

Great idea! We always tied the aft end of the hammock to the whisker pole ring on the mast. Don't you worry about adding too much pull to your surrounds this way?

Hi Anne! We have a 'baby stay' on our mast which would get in the way of a forestay-mast strung hammock. The shrouds are designed to work under tension and the windward shrouds have huge tensile loads applied to them whilst sailing so they can easily handle a couple of hammocks. Fair winds, Chris and Rossella 👍

Just found your channel- thanks for lots of useful videos. This one is great as I just bought a hammock because 1) It was half price at West Marine, and 2) I'm hoping it makes the wife want to go sailing more! So now I know where to actually hang it! Fair winds. -Jim

Hay, Chris. I like the video! But I'm concerned if the combined weight of a couple on the hammocks could harm the safety of the boat mast and forestay / sidestay... What your experience about it?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 6 лет назад
Hi Felipe, in our experience there is no problem whatsoever. I weigh around 80 kg and Rossella weighs around 45 kg, so we aren't the heaviest people, but the loads on the shrouds and forestay are many times higher whilst sailing the boat. Thank you for watching and commenting. Fair winds! Chris (& Rossella) 👍

Nice idea of using paracord to make a stop on the guyline, but that is not how you get into a hammock, nor how you lie in one. And your fishnet hammock looks both too short and too narrow for an adult. You should be able to lie flat in a proper hammock by turning your body so that you are about 30 degrees off of the centerline. From the side, the hammock looks like the support lines of a suspension bridge.

How do you tie the small diameter knot?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 5 лет назад
I tied a line on each shroud temporarily, but just left them there in the end. You could use one of these and it would work well: www.animatedknots.com/common-whipping-knot Cheers, Chris 👍

Just stumbled across your channel. Off to a great start. Subscribed already and will share. Suggestion: your cable wrap will whip in wind, and stretch/loosen with some wet weathering. There are some simple very useful sailing knots you may not be aware of like the icicle knot (end method) perfect for hanging a hammock on wire cable. scroll down this link to see it. www.animatedknots.com/icicleend/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.png&Website=www.animatedknots.com#ScrollPoint Then if you like select "sailing knots" for a few more simple ones. My advice DON'T rely on climbing or wilderness knots alone as for instance the prussic hitch will not hold on cable or modern slippery sailing lines. As always just a suggestion. Not trying to contradict you just wishing you happy sailing, good winds and following seas.

Hi Jerry, thank you very much for your comment and welcome to the crew! I completely agree regarding the line on the shrouds - I added this as a stop-gap solution after one of the hammocks slid down the shroud with someone in it... :-D I always intended to whip this line to the shroud but haven't got around to it yet. The temporary knots have been there for a couple of years now and have somehow stayed in place but I will definitely replace them with a more seamanlike solution, and I should have done this before making the video! Thank you for the knot resource, it is very useful and one can never know too many knots. Fair winds, Chris (& Rossella) 👍
