99% of people would gain more by changing the bushings (if they have them) to 699 bearings or changing the OE bearings to ones with Non contact seals. Last week, one company released an OSPW with a bearing that was so large, it had more drag than a bottom bracket. And just consider how much load goes through a bottom bracket (rider weight) vs a chain tensioning device. Ludicrous.
A bike is not complete without an OSPW, ceramic bearings, dimpled carbon wheels, a specially coated chain from muc off in collaboration with gcn.. What else? Please add more best value for money products down below.
Even if you accept OSPWs do look better then surely this doesn’t apply when it has Muc off written on it. Imagine having a beautiful Dura ace or super record mech and adding something that looks like it was given away free with a magazine. Unless you see Ineos using these you can probably assume any claimed benefits are BS since they have Muc off as a sponsor and would go after the “marginal gains”
OSPW’s have mixed testing results, but Muc off is a sponsor, would it be better if it said ceramic speed on it, because all high end bike parts have logos on it wether its SRAM or Shimano etc.
@@mynock250 If Shimano did their own version and it was around £100 I might consider it. I would only be doing it to pimp my ride though as I ride for fun and have weight to lose before I’ll started caring about fancy bearings or weight weenie stuff or minor aero gains
Come on, it’s content like this that majorly compromises your credibility and weakens your other, often excellent content. Surely you can afford to be more discerning regarding advertised content and sponsors.
If these oversized pulley wheels are better then why doesn't Shimanno or Sram design their derailleurs with them? Obviously the "advantages" are BS even if some people think they are cooler looking. I think they look silly.
so shimano has just not the skills to make an oversized pulley wheel on their dura-ace? If it actually had any positive effect they would.. waste of money..
@@brankododig1585 if Shimano thought for one minute that OSPWs made any difference they would have developed one that shifted 100% the Dura Ace standard - they don't work, so they haven't
Oh come on Alex, you are losing all your credibility for the GCN Tech videos to come. GCN themselves have done videos explaining how this upgrade is not worth. Ok, Muc-Off is entering this market and sponsoring you, but try to maintain some integrity.
They are just showing how to install it because you might like the looks ;-) Seriously, watching all this marginal gains stuff (claimed or actual) I'm almost relieved that I'm too slow for stuff like that to matter. In older videos they demonstrate that tighter clothes or lower position gains more than changing parts of your bike that already work well.
No, couldn't take a rider seriously with one of these. I think in 10yrs we'll be laughing at ourselves as a cycling community that we (some) lapped up this marketing pointless component and was fitted to bikes 😏
The only benefits I heard in this well done video explaining how to disassemble a rear mech and add oversized pulleys was that; the oversized pulleys are more aerodynamic and they can increase chain efficiency. So if anything this would benefit backpacking bikers. Kudos to GCN Tech
@@stephenalivero4068 yes, you will save 1 watt at most, provided your chain is super clean. While bikepacking, any marginal gains from the oversized pulley will be more than offset by all the stuff that you will have to attach to your bicycle.
Can you replace the tension spring spindle on a Lingmai ospw cage for a Shimano 105 rear derailleur? I think mine is defective. It doesn't fit the Shimano 105 rear derailleur body.
If the reduction in chain friction is so important why not have a chainring the size of a dinner plate, and then you can have a nice 15-25 straight through cassette or even 16-26, get those gear ratios really close as well as reduce that chain friction.
The pully wheel (upper) on my newly installed and upgrade derailleur on my trike doesn't seem to engage the chain very well in a couple of gears, it sounds like the teeth of the pully wheel are being slapped by the chain as it spins by, then you her a popping noise ever so often. My uneducated self tells me that adding a different pully wheel with another tooth or two would or might solve that problem, by forcing the wheel and chain to better engage. Might this be a common problem, my drive train is a collection of 9 speed parts from different makers.
Good video of actually how to install , but oversized pulley s are really for pro team s , most people aren't riding fast enough to need them , and the price like what ..... Most people would be better off getting a coach for a year for that sort of money and then they would really go faster
Can't add links to a chain? you sure about that pal? Seth's bike hacks built a chain using only quick-links and it was completely fine. You can most certainly lengthen your chain and end up with two sets of quick links without any issues.
Remember that's it never how good or fit as a cyclist you are, but how good you look. This is basically for people who are over compensating and suffering from the dreaded small penis syndrome. It is at pandemic level here on this side of the pond in Amerrrica!.
This had to be pretty pride swallowing shooting this video. You've led us to believe that these jockey wheels are trash, but since this one says "Muc Off", it's now recommended...? We know you don't make the calls on content, but I hope you had a behind the scenes discussion with whoever decided to humiliate you. Hang in there bud 💪😎🇺🇸
I might be tempted to do this if (i) the oversized pulley wheel was made of carbon fibre (ii) cost at least ten thousand pounds and (iii) made no noticeable difference to my riding speed. Why did this video not establish the basics before bombarding us with instructions on how to get our hands dirty?
#AskGCNTech - This question is more for Manon - In a recent video : The Brighter Side To Wet Weather | How To Enjoy Cycling In The Rain! What are you specifically wearing? You look like you would be more comfortable in the nasty weather than your riding mate, Hank. I really struggle to keep warmth in the body even with the work of riding. I figure I need something a lot better to wear so I’m trying to figure out what to get so I hope Manon can give me some insight to what she has as it might help me. Thank you.
Just don't. Even a Acera RD-390 can handle a wider range than you need. Don't down Triple chainrings and 8 speeds.. Sold my 2020 TREK because 12 speed linear just demands triple gear jumps and doesn't have any top speed. 17-117 gear inches on my Opus kills it. Lastly.. They fail quicker when things go bad it's catastrophic. My 17t tension pulley broke and destroyed the cage it was a walk home.. I think the bearing failed. The Alivio derailleur I had went into the spokes a few time since 2013... But didn't last a week after this mod. Even a 11-13 in the stock cage did better with just sealed bearings.
These ospw brands are spending more on the display boxes than the shitty bit of carbon, ali,( “ceramic bearings “) and screws are worth. It’s a joke . But they look the biz 😂
Funny how Ineos who are supposedly the No 1 team into marginal games and are sponsored by muc off don't use them. Must be why they didn't win the tour or vuelta. Just another way for them to fleece money from you. Like the new lube at $1000/litre
Your chain pivots 180° each lap around no matter the size of your jockey wheels. So this amateur mechanical engineer needs help understanding. I do see that the bigger wheel might be heavier and have more drag. What about Campagnolo and Shimano? Do they not know how to choose the best wheel size?
Total nonsense, hundreds of pounds for no benefit, then a company like Sram make smaller chainsets and a 10 tooth cog. Honestly are people believing this garbage!
To those not understanding why Bill is asking this. The presenter casually said in this video that you can not add links to the chain. This question was provoked, and not a random cry for help in the youtube comments.
Pointless video. If you can afford these then you would be getting them fitted for you. Not doing it yourself and getting your hands dirty. Just one long advert for a certain company
GCN, stop peddling your sponsor stuff and start doing things that are really working. I knew it wasn't worth it as soon as I saw the name of the sponsor ! OSPW are not worth it, you'll gain a lot more by buying new aero cycling clothes.
I brought a nova2ride ospw for 230 euro half the price of some others makes and its lighter and a gained 2mph. The pedaling efficiency is so much easier
