The 01 - 04 Volvos are known to have a faulty designed CEM. At some point many of these CEM begin to overheat because of design flaw. This overheating causes many electrical issues and various other problems. The way to fix this for less than $15 is to add a 12 volt computer fan. Watch video for the details. Subscribe for more.

From Nigeria, had mine used xc90 for years, No mech could fix it. Haven't driven it for 20minutes without this problem. Can't wait to try this out.

Dear 33 Electric, firstly greetings from UK. This is one of the most basic, useful fix videos for xc90 on RU-vid. Just the other day I drove home from work, no problems at all then went straight out a couple of minutes later and pressed the door button - nothing, so thought it was odd, opened it with the key then got Airbag & brake failure warnings then dash went blank so I drove home in limp mode. Put a diagnostic tool on it & cleared codes it's been fine since but guess what it was like 80°F so I think it's just overheating. I'm going to put a fan in mine. So thank you very much👍💰

I've driven nothing but Volvos for decades. They all have the same problem...overheating electrical components, mainly relays and computers. I learned how to take relays out, check out the solder joins for cracks, retouch them, take the covers off carefully and drill them full of holes, and put them back. This way the trapped heat can escape. I don't buy new ones unless I have to. I also pull out fuses and sand them off, they can be full of corrosion. If you are running A/C, you are making engine run harder and making it overheat since it has to turn compressor as well. I usually lower the windows and let the outside air in. You would think that by now Volvo would fix this, but they won't.

Thanks for this video. Once my xc90 drives for about 20 kilometres, it loses power and starts to hesitate when pushing down the gas pedal. Sometimes, the dash just goes blank, and the entire system just underperformes. I can't wait to try this. Much love from Nigeria 🇳🇬 ❤️

I had the same problem in my 04 s60. I removed the CEM on pulled the metal cover off of one of the components and wired up a computer fan. The metal cover trapped a huge amount of heat...it’s been 2 years and still works great. I’ve heard of people using tiny heat sinks, also.
@33electric33

I didn't realize there was a metal cover as well. To much work for me.. haha... I just drove my volvo down to Miami and had the A/C running most of the time to the floor in 100degree weather. Didn't have a problem.

Hi 33 El, exactly where do you unscrew the panel below the steering to access the CEM? Sorry for this basic question bit I'm not familiar. Thank you and I appreciate this helpful video. Yes this problem has baffled even Volvo technicians as it comes out sporadically.

Brilliant! Thank you for sharing. As a related note, have you secured the upper CEM unit from water intrusion from the exterior? The unit is accessed by removing the windshield wipers and wiper plastic piece that runs along the bottom of the windshield. The factory design is a super flaw and can easily lead to corrosion do to water intrusion from not only aging weather seals but also a fundamentally poorly designed protective housing. Cheers.
@705speednstyle4
@705speednstyle4 2 года назад
Yeah that is a much bigger problem then overheating. The unit may overheat due to water damage through sunroof drain leaking inside the driver's side A pillar and the cover design is definitely horrible

One way I remember to test this out is to start car and put a hair dryer underneath pointed up towards CEM. If its starts glitching within about 10mins you know its overheating problem and fan should work.

@@33electric33 cars have limp home mode, when they detect any electrical or mechanical failures ecu puts the car car in limp home mode which reduces the power so you wont damage the engine or cause an accident

Omar, I know my ‘04 XC90 does go into ‘limp home mode’ when CEM overheats and shuts down. Any accessory you have on stays on though, like headlights and taillights, but no a/c compressor, turn signals, power windows or locks, etc, etc, and trans defaults to 3rd gear only and reverse. If your car does go into limp home mode, be very gentle taking off from dead stop, accelerate as slowly as possibly to avoid damaging transmission as it is taking off in 3rd gear. Just my 2 cents worth

@33electric33
@33electric33 4 года назад
There are 2 codes Ihave not been able to get off... One says SRS Airbag... The other says.... Brake Failure Never had issue with brakes though It also has service light on, took to mechanic, he cleared them but came back on. One way to test and know deffinitley if your having the issue I talked about in the video with CEM, is to get hair dryer, turn on high and blow on the CEM for 10 minutes. The problem should occur quite quickly. Thats a way to diagnose the overheating.

@@33electric33 I've had the "Brake Failure" light before. I've owned 6 Volvo's so far, 4 xc90, 1 s60, also the s40. All are awesome rides, I've also rebuilt 2 of the 2.5 turbo engines. With my experience it's always been the brake booster under the hood, front right corner by the air cleaner box.

The cem electrical is most likely due to water.... From rain leaking down side of windshield.... If it doesn't get channeled out correctly, it drips RIGHT ON TOP of the cem..I woke up one morning to lights blinking, horn honking..... Pouring down rain outside.... Totally fried the cem.. Found some guy on eBay, paid $200 for them to program my donor cem and make an extra key.

@breckenridgerob9679
@breckenridgerob9679 Год назад
I had the same problem, and like you said, it wasn't due to heat, it was caused by rain not draining properly under the hood vents. The CEM is installed under the area of driver side wiper and it has a gasket to keep it sealed. I took it out, saw that some of the electrical pins were corroded, I cleaned them with isopropol alcohol on a cuetip and then reinstalled. Obviously I used new gasket to reseal. So far so good.

We have a 2007 xc90 random stalling on surface streets at low speed, on freeway at high speed. Sudden loss of power (motor dies) pull over without being killed by other drivers… put in park turn ignition off. Immediately start and drives like it never happened….
@33electric33
@33electric33 Год назад
Sorry to hear that problem. Thats similar to what my volvo did. If you get a hair dryer and blow it up towards the CEM and leave the car running for about 10 minutes and it dies, then there is your problem.

@33electric33
@33electric33 3 года назад
Overheating is a broad term. Could you elaborate more? If its overheating under the hood it sounds like you have a coolant leak. You can take that to a local shop and fix easy if thats the problem. If its the problem I talk about in the video you have to put a fan on the CEM under dash.
