This is the best video on this particular subject which relates to my tractor. The shifter is so stiff that the bar bends a little. Thank you for an informative video and attention to the details.
I have a Dana, Spicer, Foote 4450-3 transaxle on my old Murray 30" cut riding mower. Regarding the brake obsolescence issue in your video. I encountered the same problem. Went to McMaster Carr catalog and ordered brake pads and cut them to exact size of the originals. They worked great! RM
Thanks for making this video. My old Spicer transaxle quit shifting. I used the motorcycle trick and heated the two brass plugs. Bentonite great is easy to make . The manufacturer will send you the clay. just need a blender.
the detent ball bearings are the same size as the ball bearings out of the rear wheel of a 26 in Bicycle. just find an old bicycle or go to a shop and buy the replacement bearing for the rear wheel and disassemble the bearing set and put 2 of them in your trans axle and then you have a few spares.
also the shift balls are exacly the same size as the bearings found in most one piece crank bicycles dont get lazy... get creative and dont let part numbers restrict you! you can find most of the stupid little parts at any good hardware store: any size steel ball u need, bronze bushings, axle seals, i even found a set of needle bearings rated for 10k rpm max that fit my input shaft! i also make shift keys out of leaf spring steel cuz i like to shift like a dirtbike lol
Now that's a new one... How well does it shift with those home made shift keys? Oh I don't let part numbers restrict me... I've had to do some interesting things to get some of my old equipment running again...
it will shift quite well once worn in a bit i make them taller than factory so it shifts hard. at first i used regular steel and it just sheered right away but the spring steel is great and im always experimenting with different shapes. i use a couple well placed holes with the drill press then a cut off wheel, bench grinder, dremel and bench mount disc sander its a process to get them symmetrical but they seem to last longer than factory ones
I have 4150-16 replaced rusted 1/4'" chrome steel balls from Walmart pkg/25 $5 ??where to get neoprene washers I got brake material from auto mach shop to make pads
I have the exact same problems with the shifter. How did you get the pulley off? I have tried everything but my 20 Ibs hammer. Btw.. couldn't you just make the neo washers?
wheel bearing grease mixed with lucas oil stabilizer works way better than that bentonite b.s. or if u get creative with some rtv around all the seals u can use strait up gear oil or lucas... i use strait lucas in a posi 6spd spicer on a 40-50mph 14hp modded oppy twin racer its really aggressively pulley swapped 7" motor 3" trans and that thing wont quit had it in there for almost 3 years now
i get the thickest stuff i can find its still quite a bit thinner but far stickier i sealed the crap out of the thing with black rtv it only leaks after a long high speed ride i think its more because of the pressure it makes in there when hot than anything else
It's been way too long, unfortunately I don't recall what the part number was. It was a Tecumseh needle bearing. If you can get me the tractor's model number I can try to look it up for you.
where are the neoprene washers found. I need those myself. I'm thinking of converting mine too. are they different sizes for different models? I'm working on a 4450-1 and a 26-5440. thx in advance.
Unfortunately Dana / Spicer no longer makes those parts. I checked with my supplier and they supersede to this number: 532134401. But that too is of course NLA... A hardware store would be your best bet now.
I didn't make note of the size of the new seals. But, I think the thickness was around an eighth inch thick. You'll just have to figure it out by trial and error.
Not 10 min after posting the neighbor came by and asked if I tried banging with a hammer... ofc I tried... 4 wacks from my neighbor and it came loose... fffs!
