This post helped me tremendously! Tractor found its way to a lake and went for swim. Got engine going but transaxle froze solid and no lawn service would touch it. With your videos I was able to take it apart clean it good and regrease it and now it runs better than it has for years! Must have looked at the video 30 times to make sure all the little parts sat right. Your tip of a tap with a hammer worked like a charm, Thanks!
Thanks for uploading these videos, sure helped me as I was unsure of taking one of these apart. I was told to use "00" grease, also called cotton picker grease when servicing these transmissions. I found it at Tractor Supply, it's made by Super S. I'm sure other agricultural and industrial places would have it as well. It seems thick enough that it won't leak out of the transmission, but we'll see what happens when I get it back together.
Remove one spring and detent ball (use magnet), add double ought grease via that hole onto top of shifter plate and ball detent area. Place tractor up on jackstands and clutch action with shifter lever left and right may get shifter action back to normal. (jockey the drive wheel back and forth , maybe a half inch to mesh the internal gearing) See the fix/work series videos, where they add a grease zerk fitting to the shift housing column, this prevents moisture in the air from building up rust on certain transaxle components. Zerk grease fitting in one of these videos seals the input shaft which is a pretty decent idea. This transaxle design came up short on long term use and storage of the transaxle. Company has been bandrupt in this application for several years.

This is VERY good! But as far as using gun grease in one of these I had an old Ex-Mark 4 footer with a 4 speed Peerless tranny and Ex-Mark had an update that stated that when the warranty went dead to drill, tap and install a grease zerk in the tranny case because they were prone to leak and that way you could replenish the worn out and set up bentonite with gun grease. It worked fine and I also took the neutral switch out of a Peerless on a Craftsman rider and used a fitting and shot some grease in it to loosen things up. I am also working on a Dana 4360 and am going to do the same as a precautionary measure. The bentonite settles out and stiffens up and you loose your lube for everything. Bentonite is a clay after all and clay will harden. Some gun grease will get things moving again and as far as leaks go, if it's leaking you know it isn't dry!
Just done the same job on my husqvarna transaxle. i sealed the case and put 90 grade oil in. They recommend you only use bentonite grease but i am using oil after the mess i found in there, once that grease dries out your screwed.
your oil ever leak, and if so was it a lot or just little, im thinking about swapping mine from grease filled to oil cos im gonna pulley swap it and the grease wont hold that extra heat well
Thanks for explaining which way the gears face. I think I put one Spicer six speed together the wrong way as it doesn't want to come out of gear very easily. If I shut the motor off, no problem. It does have gear oil in it but I think I'll use John Deere Cornhead Grease instead as it liquifies under load and won't leak out.
Good morning, Nice to say hello, I would like to know if you sell spare parts for a Craftsman lt1000 mower transmission, I would need the input shaft in the transmission which is a 4360 140 and the two bearings that secure that input shaft, please.
I’ve watched & listen to all kinds of videos about how to repair Tecumseh, Peerless Transaxles & none of them really show how to put the gears & shift washers back the on the shafts. Please show how this is done if you are going to make a video on how to repair a Transaxle show how the gears face & which way the washers go on if you people can’t do this, then don’t make a video on how to repair a Transaxle.
