My father got a grinder when I was 6 years old in 1957. It cut wood well, until my father caught me. Now my brother has that grinder 64 years later.

Best proper repair I found on youtube. Checking out more videos.

Epoxy will trap moisture and allow the wood to rot and break again if the connection point gets wet. It works better if you pressure fit the end and then treat with a 50/50 solution of boiled linseed oil and denatured alcohol to let the wood swell and form to the rake and cover.

Love the channel, thanks for another great video! Do you have a video on how to fix a pump garden sprayer? My problem is in the handle... I can squeeze the handle but the valve never seems to open! Any ideas? Thanks

the head of mine broke at the very side end of the tines where the end support is. how do I fix this? I would think I need to weld it or replace

I am thinking if the wood is rotten and gone, measure the collar or feral to see what to taper the handle to. I am fixing mine with hand tools.

So you just bang it on there at the end? I bought a new Ames handle (the old one was really bad all over) and the hole in it is too small. I thought of heating up the rake and burning it into the hole, but that would probably weaken it. I didn't think about reaming it with a dremel though. Didn't think about epoxy either Thanks

Would agree with how you did it with one exception. Instead of two drill holes side by side one drill right in the center is better. Hole should be the same size as the original. That leaves the most wood around the metal rake end that goes into the handle. Glue is fine. The metal part spreads the wood up against the metal Ferrell collar. Your way (my opinion) will split easier and not hold quite as good.

A spokeshave plane, would be the tool for that taper. Not a grinder.

I looked at a spoke shaver and it would cost about $20 for one. I thought to myself, i cannot justify buying one of these just for this one off job. I tried placing the handle in a vice and using my electric planer, that was too aggresive, so i switched to a hand planer. Both methods were tedious as i would have to loosen the vice and spin the handle round all the time. I had five garden tools to fix so I had to figure out a quicker method. I placed a hand plane (after a quick sharpen of the blade) upside down and clamped it in my vice. Then i run the handle over the blade and slightly turn the handle after each cut. Took me about 5-10 minutes to do each handle.

I would go ahead a get you a spoke shave planer. You will be surprised at how useful it is with other jobs.

Hello there. While I'm all for fixing your tools and re using them I do have to say that for something like this it's better to just buy new. The wooden handle for the rake is like $8 at home depot and a new rake is $14 with like a 10 year warranty. Considering all the work you had to do to fix it it's better to just buy a new one I think but I do see how you can't put a price on taking pride in fixing your own stuff since we've morphed into a wasteful societty.

Better yet. STOP BUYING CRAP FROM CHINA - they make cheap, horrible products. I have a rake that is 50 years old and it is still in good working condition. This one in the video, I would guess, is probably a couple of years, if that, old and is most likely made in China.

Many older rake and shovel heads are of far better quality than you can purchase today. A good quality rake handle is cheaper than buying a cheap China rake in the long run.

I can see you snapping the handle after 9 years and trying to get your money back 😄

8:28 that's is a terrible taper. You find that acceptable? I lost confidence in your advice, no offense.

Sit looks like the amount of time you spent to do this you could have purchased a new rake at a minimum wage rate.

Read the above reply to Daniel Nieto. There is good reasons to replace. My "TIME" is pretty cheap and better than setting in front of the TV watching someone else do something.
