HOW TO FIX A BROKEN WINDOW

In this video I demonstrate how I fixed a broken window in my house quickly and easily for under $100.
FAQS
Cost:
The window pane for this particular project cost me $75.
Where to buy:
I order my panes from a local mom and pop glass shop. They mostly do auto glass but their glass supplier also makes residential window panes. I did a map search for glass shops and started calling them up, asking if they can get double pane (argon filled) window glass with grids inside (if grids are needed)

nice on the pain measurement. I usually wait a day for the silicone to dry -then use the knife to remove excess. Every time I mess with wet silicone it's all over the window and my hand.

Wow that's super easy. All the window "professionals" I called in my area said they can't replace the broken glass that they would have to replace the entire window. I can understand maybe wanting to sell the windows you have in stock perhaps but as easy as that is i can't for the life of me understand why a pro wouldn't take that job and make some quick easy money in the process. I may add this to the services I offer now since nobody around here does it and it's insanely easy.

Your videos helps a lot in my situation. Question though, my window frame/glass are similar to yours but with a wooden frame with wooden molding stops. Would you recommend silicone caulking or glazing putty/compound to set the glass into the frame? Currently, it appears that the manufacture used some sort of grey glazing putty. Should I clean up the putty from the frame and set the glass with silicone caulking/sealant instead? Where I live I cannot seem to get the right putty other than GAP 33 putty. Thanks for your advice and insight.

Double pane glass like the one I’m working on is factory sealed. Yes I could probably break the seal and remove the grids but the window would be ruined. Condensation would gather between the panes fogging the window to where you couldn’t see out at all. Best way would be to order new panes like did but without the grids.

Any chance you have a video about how to remove the muntins/mullions in a similar window? Or would you just leave that to the professionals? The other option would be to just do this same process, but order the glass without the grids? I'd love to just remove them since the rest of the window is working great.

In my area, glass manufacturers won't sell to the public. They only sell to glass repair shops. I had to pay $660.installed, for one about twice the size as you bought for $75. It only took the guy about 15 minutes to actually put the replacement in. The first time he just came out to get the measurements. Nice profit.

I’m not sure. It’s the trim that holds the glass pane in place. Glass pane retainers, or glass pane trim, maybe? I kind of doubt you could buy just those pieces though. Best bet would be to get name and model/serial number of the window and call the manufacturer.

I have the same type of windows, but mine don't have the "strips" that hold the glass in place, they're solid all the way across and join together with 45°s at the corners. A few of the windows in my house have broken seals,, in-between the panes of glass, and are foggy. Can you show me how to disassemble my style...pretty please????
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 10 месяцев назад
Did you check both the inside and the outside very carefully? The strips can be on either side and will look like they’re one piece until you look very closely and pry on them a bit. Some strips are cut on a 45 at the corners instead of square like mine. Not saying it’s not possible but I have yet to see a vinyl window without those strips.

@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes Год назад
Any vinyl window I’ve done the top section is the same process as the bottom. Only difference is if the top sash is not removable (single hung) then it will have to be replaced while in the window and not on sawhorses like I did. Also sometimes the strips that hold the glass in will be on the outside.
