I have to replace a 4'x4' piece of single pane from hail damage. I bought the glass yesterday but ordered it cut an 8th inch too tall. I tried to score and snap it but broke the glass. That's $120 out the window. What a pane in the glass, man.

Hi, would it be this same process for your aluminum window? I ask because thats the kind of window I have and was afraid to start this process if it didn't work lol My window doesn't have putty/glaze it seems like plastic holding the window in. 🤔
@CantankerousDave
@CantankerousDave 4 года назад
I didn’t know about that paint thinner trick or the drill attachment gizmo. It would have sped up the process quite a bit when I reglazed 20 sashes in my house this past spring. Every one of them looked like the example you showed. They were leaking air like a sieve. One other tip for fellow newbies - when you paint them, the paint is *supposed* to extend onto the glass a bit. It’s part of the air seal.

Coming from experience I would say the putty knife will give you more professional results versus the caulk gun. At least with the knife, you can get perfect corners.

Great video, Ron! Instead of using glazing, can I use caulking or Flex Seal? Also, I notice you use DAP glazing. I've read a lot of negative reviews on this particular brand, and was wondering if you've ever had a problem with it.

Use dap correctly and you’ll be fine. Don’t use flex seal or caulk, glaze is better

@KingofRoath
@KingofRoath 2 года назад
Thanks Ron, but the one thing I wanted to know was how to measure the replacement piece of glass, which is the one bit you skipped! Eg, the rebate is 1/4", how much gap do I leave?
@evelyncook8061
@evelyncook8061 2 года назад
I have this question also. I used the actual dimensions of the broken piece, but didn’t allow for how I would get it back in the frame. The visible dimensions are 11 x 12; the actual glass was 11 1/4 x 12 3/8. I guess I need to have another pain cut, or try to trim this one myself with a glass cutter, but not sure how much I need to subtract from the dimensions to wiggle it in.
@KingofRoath
@KingofRoath 2 года назад
@@evelyncook8061 Hi Evelyn. If you measured the pane you took out, I'm not sure how it won't go back in. But the general rule is to leave 1/8" gap all round. The glazier who cut the glass for me misread my diagram and cut it 1/4" too long. It took him about 2 mins to correct it.
@evelyncook8061
@evelyncook8061 2 года назад
I can’t angle it in to the pane. I’m gonna get another smaller piece today. Fingers crossed.

Have a window exactly like that with all the panes busted on an old shed in the back yard of a house I just bought as is. The occupancy permit inspector said I had to fix that before we could move in (as if I’m going to be living in the shed) You made this look very manageable, never dealt with glass before, so thanks a ton!

Thank you Ron for sharing. I replaced my windows putty a year ago. I'm having a bad mold issue on the new putty. Any solutions for this?
@growingthehome427
@growingthehome427 3 года назад
it is very susceptible to mold if not painted over or not painted over quickly after drying. I would suggest removing it and redoing and making sure to seal it in as soon as possible after it has a film to the top (before even drying out all the way) with oil, not water-based paint.

Okay, but Dap 33 Window Glazing Putty (not Painter's Putty for drywall) doesn't dry hard after 48 hours, at minimum like in a week when you can't leave a fingerprint, but more like 2-3 weeks and then it will dry. Once dried then you can paint to seal the glass in place
