How To Fix A Car Shift Linkage Cheap and Easy

If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, there's a good chance the collet has broken and fallen out. Most car companies don't sell the collet separately. They only sell the whole cable, which is expensive. In this video I show you how to fix a car shift linkage cheap and easy, building your own collet out of a shock absorber bushing and some washers. If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, watch this video and then go look at your car and see if you can fix your shift linkage the way I fixed mine. If it works, it costs less than $10 and will last a long, long time.
Here's where to buy the rubber bushing:

Here is where to buy a set of E-clips:

Here is a set of flat washers:

Yesterday, I encountered a situation where a mechanic attempted to charge me an excessive amount for a repair that was not necessary. The issue was not with the shift cable, as the mechanic had claimed, but rather with the bushing. I was able to rectify the problem myself. Thanks to this video.

My mechanic was in the hospital when mine broke off. I told him I was going to take it to Express so they can fix it since he was in the hospital. He told me I better not dare go pay all those $100's+ of dollars when all he can do is put some zip ties on it for free. Well the next day after getting out the hospital... He came in zip tied it all up. Now it works fine.

Love the comment about greasing the rubber......quality! Great video, I am having this problem with my brother's 1999 Cougar V6. I have made a temporary repair with a lump of plastic as the bush, and a modified split-pin, but now I've seen this video, I will use this method. Interestingly, I found the two bolts that secure the ball-joint block under the gearstick were loose too......this was also the case on my own 1998 Cougar, so this may be worth checking as well. Thank you for a very helpful video!

@Engineer9736
@Engineer9736 2 года назад
Because zip ties are easily broken by hand already. These gearlever cables are driven by the gear lever, which, as the name says, is a lever. It multiplies the force you put in it times 5 or so. So that will snap zipties easy. A solution like the guy in the video did is the way to go.

Thanks. It is a California car, so it hasn't seen rain or snow or mud. I forget sometimes how rusty a car gets in other states.

8 year old post but here goes. Couple days ago my gear stick was stuck due to some very cold conditions here in the UK at present. After idling for 5-10 mins it loosen but I was wondering if it may need greased or if there is any potential hack we could use to stop this from happening? When I say cold, its only between -2 and -5 which isn't all that cold tbh - but the problem is a bit of a pain.

Will this cause a floor shiftier to be stuck in park? Awesome video. Thanks a lot.

+Neil Williams Maybe, if it has come completely disconnected down below, and the shifter moves freely but the car stays in park. If it’s stuck in park and you can’t get it out of park, and it is an automatic, then it is probably a problem with the switch on the brake pedal. A lot of cars have a switch on the brake pedal that stops you from taking it out of park unless you have your foot on the brake.

If the brake lights work, does that mean the brake switch is good? 2002 Nissan Maxima 3.5 With the key to on position and my foot to the brake pedal, it does not work. This car was in a flood. The water was above the brake pedal. Could the flood have messed up the brake switch? Thanks for your reply and help.

For a second there I thought you were gonna drop those specs into a 3-D printer and create some real magic. Good video tho, very helpful.

Thanks. I wish I had a 3D printer, but all I have is a razor knife.

Ford mustang just had a trans rebuild everything clicks in to place except when I go from drive to reverse its a little off. I can feel it but it will pass the R a bit then I have to pull it down to make sure its clicked in . This only happens when I do from drive to reverse not park to reverse or any of the others what could it Be ? Is it the shifter ? Please answer if possible thanks :)

Great vid hope it saves people money and such Side note... that rubber is probably not ready for a petroleum based grease... maybe something silicone next time. Not exactly OEM anyway right :)
