After three and a half years, all year round UK cycling and approximately 20,000 miles, the Shimano threaded bottom bracket on my Triban RC520 wasn't sounding too happy.
So I thought I'd do a bit of a service around this area of the bike and try and record some of the key maintenance steps when investigating/sorting out bottom bracket issues. Have you had the same issues with your bike? Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Happy cycling folks!

I have two bikes from the same manufacturer purchased from the same bike shop. Both brand new. Both had annoying noises coming from the bottom of the bike. Thanks for some ideas of what to check.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I've heard new bikes aren't necessarily immune to these issues. Hope you get them sorted. Happy cycling!

I'm happy for you solving the problem, but since you made a number of changes without testing in between, you'll never know which thing(s) you addressed was(were) causing the noise.

Hi. That's a fair observation. I mentioned in the video which of the 3 parts I 'serviced' I thought was the likely cause but you're right without testing after each one it's not possible to be 100% sure. Gives an idea of the main things to check though (I hope!).

@@onemorecyclist Agreed. Some people just want the noise to stop and care little about what was causing it. The analyst in me wants the issue solved, but he also wants to know what was causing it as a data point for solving it again or for preventing it from recurring.

I used a Shimano Tiagra RS500 as the replacement.

Thanks for the video! What's the size of those tires? I'm planning to get schwalbe Marathon 37-622 but wondering if I'll be able to fit mudguards (sks bluemels)
@onemorecyclist
@onemorecyclist 2 года назад
I'm running 700x32/622x32 Schwalbe Marathons. No probs with mudguards on but not sure how much bigger it's possible to go and still keep the mudguards. 37 might be possible. Let me know if you try 37 and it works. Remember you need a bit of room for any debris that 'sticks' to the tyre and runs inside the guards before coming off. Thanks for the comment and happy cycling!

@@onemorecyclist do you find 32 comfortable enough? And enough for light gravel? 🙂
@onemorecyclist
@onemorecyclist 2 года назад
For road cycling/touring I think they're perfect, yes. Light off road (access roads and canal towpaths etc.) they are fine but if I did more riding on these surfaces I'd go with a larger tyre for sure.

@@pjinkilas bro I run 700c x 25 Continental Gatorskins at over 100 psi and I bomb it over pot-holed gravel paths, down muddy forest tracks, as well as hammer it on the road... is it theoretically ideal? Probably not. Does it work? Heck yeah it does, and it's a ton of fun too. To anyone worried about tyre dimensions and rideability and all that I say forget about all this stuff and just get out there and smash it with what you can get your hands on as long as it works! Shiny side up and have fun!

Dear All, mine does not creak or makes clicking noises, but rather constant grinding, like wet-sand paper-sand is mashed together - can't explain it better. It is far from smooth and "silent". Maybe it is something in between my crankset and the bottom bracket? Never riden on wet surface nor during raining, I have 1000km in it only dry conditions. Any suggestion? It drives me crazy. Could the chain on the cogs so loud? I would not believe.

It's often hard to identify exactly where the noise is coming from, isn't it? The only other things that spring to mind (as well as what I covered in the video) are wrong size chain fitted or seized link somewhere, bent derailleur or front derailleur rubbing (i.e. needs adjusting). Finally make sure the chain is threaded properly through the rear derailleur as if it isn't you can have metal on metal rubbing there. Hope you get it sorted and happy cycling!

Did you fix yours? I have the exact same issue after the same km as yours in dry condition...

If it's a gritty noise, the bearings could be gone. Try and spin them with your finger and see if it spins smoothly or if it's rough.

@onemorecyclist Год назад
Hi. Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I'm not with the bike at the moment (to see if there's any identifier on the part) but I think it's a Shimano Hollowtech threaded BB. Decathlon might confirm the exact part/part no. if you dropped them a message.
