Top notch. I'm in my late 60s and my next younger brother a couple years behind and I have been griping that all the local old hardware shops that serviced things like our Coleman stove are gone or no one does it any more. All I needed was a good swift kick in the rear and your video to help energize me to do it myself. Last deer season, the ol' stove (maybe only 20 years old) was acting up and we were concerned it'd stop working. Suddenly, on the old aluminum camp table, it burst into big flames and we stood back not knowing what would happen. After about 3 minutes of blazing, it stopped, we turned it all off, waited for it to cool down and then is began working perfect. Not the best way to clean it out. I bought a 425E today for $20! I cleaned it a little bit and checked the tank, no rust and put oil on the leather cup... Works great!! I love these old stoves.......Great video brother!!
Good deal on that stove. And, good for you rebuilding stuff and to your mom for giving you stuff to rebuild. Knowing how to turn a wrench is a good life lesson.
FYI if you're going to work on alot of these, Coleman recommends neetsfeet oil for the leather cup which won't degrade it. Soak for 24 hours if it's a new leather cup. And for PTFE tape use the blue kind that won't fall apart from petroleum products coming into contact with it.
Mate - great video. Just one thing, it ain't 'corrosion' on the needle stem, rather it is carbon build up from the burnt fuel. Tip; you can use a little fuel injector cleaner every couple of tanks and keeps the carbon build up down.
You do not want to tighten the nut that holds the long needle in the generator too tight because you will not be able to turn the black knob to turn the gas on or off. There is a packing in there that keeps the fuel from coming out around the brass nut that holds it in. Just tighten it to where the knob turns freely and not hard. If overtightened it will ruin the packing seal in there and the valve will begin to leak fuel out behind the black knob.

Coleman gasoline powered stoves and lamps are very well made, just a little maintenance from time to time, and you'll be rewarded with a dependable item, i have an original 220b from 1935 that still run like a champ, also the Coleman 533 stove and a Coleman 214-700 kerosene single mantle. I prefered them over propane powered ones.
Great video and very informative. I just bought a Coleman Stove from 1980. It had little use by the look of it and It fired up just fine. I may do a tear down and cleanup of it just like you did with this one......Take care, Bluefin.

Thank you, tighten the tip... Sometimes I'll take the tip off I'll put some fingernail Polish on the threads or Teflon tape and then I'll put the tip back on and that flame will go away

I don't wanna hear it's his wife's nail polish. 😂 I would tape that tube and squirt carb cleaner till it's full and soak it for a while . Saves fluids , it won't evaporate too fast and the effect is much greater and healthier . Great video . 👍
The inner spring of the generator should have been removed and cleaned. Normally, it should come right out. With it being stuck tells me there is a lot of dirt and corrosion.
Inflation is out if control, I can't find one for less than $40 and it's a half pile of rust that hasn't been tested. Another that looks like it's in good condition is $60.

Got a couple of those older stoves on Craigslist- in the freebie section, no less. A 425 and some older model (413?), supposedly designed for gasoline. Also found one of the old white-gas lanterns for cheap, and in good condition, at a garage sale.

I just bought a 425b at a garage sale for $5 it was in a flood the day before the whole stove was under water I dried it out the best I could put gas in it but no dice should I take it apart like you did,? also what about the part the shaft goes it how do you take that apart?
What a great video! It explains everything so well! My wife and I bought a double burner Coleman stove at an estate sale the other day for $20. We both knew that was a monster of a deal. It’s date stamped 8/79, so that makes it about a year younger than both of us. I started playing with it that day. It wouldn’t light after following the directions to a T. I then started with the tank and tube. Everything looked good there. I sprayed some WD40 down the tube for insurance. I put the tube back on and some fuel came out the end of the tube so that’s good. I will try it again and see it if will flame. If not that then problem must be in the burners. It has a tank full of white gas I suppose of unknown age but when I poured a little on the sidewalk it flamed up big and yellow with good heat, so that shouldn’t be the problem. Even though it’s pretty well self explanatory, I want to thank you very much for the help!
Very well done!!!! I have the one that my Dad used when he climbed Mt Whiney after his discharge from the USN in 1946. It works great and I have many, many wonderful memories of the two of us camping with the Boy Scouts.
Great video! They delivered a Coleman 425E I found on ebay today.A little rusty and crusty, just needs some TLC. Might as well start with taking everything apart and cleaning it up. 😎

I lit my old stove this week after 20 years of its sitting in my Mom's basement. It lit but there were flames on the burner AND where the pipe goes into the hole. That flame continued after after I turned off the stove.
Sounds like it was flooded, did you have the lever down when you started it? The lever needs to be up so it only draws vapours from the top of the tank, you turn it down once the flame has warmed the generator for awhile & you are starting to get a blueish flame & this makes it draw solid fuel from the bottom of the tank.
Don't use auto fuel, too many additives, just use Coleman fuel or generic brand Naptha fuel and you will never have to clean valve assembly again, just maybe put some neatsfoot oil on the pump leather as needed and that's it.

i need to get mine out and clean them .when my uncle passed my cousin gave me his camping stuff.they were 2 coleman stoves one with 2 burners and the 2nd with 3 burners been over a year its time to get them out and clean them . thanks to you i know how now
An old friend gave me back my 3-burner Colman Stove. It looks like it's not going to get back up to speed. It's an early 1960s vintage. Parts are available and at a reasonable cost. I am going to work on it once it cools off in September. I didn't know you could just use regular gasoline in the thing. I always used Coleman white gas. Either way. I am saving this video for reference. I like loctight red. But nail polish that a good hack.
Thanks for showing how to clean it. I just picked one of these up for 12.00 but the plunger seems to be having a hard time. I’ll try cleaning it and see what that does.
Not normal, should be replaced, but if you can't find one you can put it back in. It's designed to hold heat and help aid in the process of converting liquid fuel to a gas.
Hi I have a 425E almost the same as the one here except that it has stamped " feet" not the wire kind . Mine had a very poor flame. Pump was not working. I bought the pump repair kit at amazon but that didn't help. I cleaned the gas assembly like here and i found it was very clean. In the end the only problem was the tank cap. The seal was flattened out and wasn't holding the pressure. I could not find a replacement that guaranteed that it fit this stove, so i looked around in my stash of seals and o rings and i found one that sealed very well. Just the right diameter and thickness and that fixed it. Its a green colored o ring that was part of a car AC o ring kit made by Factory Air P N 26743. I saved the bag of the o rings i never used and came in handy. I think i paid about 10 bucks for it about 3 years ago. The tank tabs on this stove read 471.
@@jiujitsu2000 I like ur nail polish hack, I actually dipped a small grass straw into some PVC glue & used the tiniest line of this around some of these thread fittings, I dont know if it will last, but seems to do the job so far.
The lighting valve serves the following purpose: That rod you were moving via the lever on the pickup tube opens a hole in the top of the tube while covering the hole on the bottom. This works to draw in vapors that exist above the fuel level in the tank to get the stove started (you can fill the tank fully and there will still be a space for vapor at the top) and heat up the generator tube for a minute, at which point it becomes hot enough to vaporize liquid fuel, so you then turn the lever down, which closes the top hole and opens the bottom, drawing the liquid from the tank. Simple, elegant.

Really can't beat these stoves. I'll take my 425 and my powerhouse big boy over any propane one. I'm sure you knew this, but if the stove has a red tank it's only supposed to use white gas based on the generator it has. The fuel huel models have a special generator for gas so it doesn't gum up. Those have grey tanks. But as you said if you clean it you're good. More advice for the person who isn't going to take it apart and clean it. You can buy a fuel fuel generator that will fit these old models.

Great video! I watched another video of yours when you were removing a check valve with an impact driver. My question is what are the chances of wrecking the check valve that way. I have a single burner stove that has a bad check valve and I have held off from removing it your way for fear of wrecking the check valve. I ordered a check valve removal tool but it still isn't here. Which way would you recommend?

You know a lot about these stoves so I want to ask if it would be ok to run some fuel additive to the tank since it runs on gas? I am talking like STP fuel injector cleaner? That would save taking it apart and perhaps damaging something?

I have watched many videos of these stoves and these stoves vs propane. My question , what are the side effects ( if any) or health concerns of ingesting the Coleman fuel that’s being burned by the stove.
Disclaimer: I'm no expert so take this with a grain of salt. Firstly, no fuel should be making it's way into the food, it should all be burned off. That said, Coleman fuel looks like its make up from cyclohexane (C6H12), nonane (C9H20), octane (C8H18), heptane (C7H18), and pentane (C5H18) Propane is (C3H8) All of these fall under the category of "hydrocarbons" which, when burned in the atmosphere, result in: Carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), water vapor (H2O), and sometimes residual oxygen (O2) In varying amounts depending on which hydrocarbon and the air-fuel mixture. That would mean the coleman fuel is no more dangerous than the propane.
Nail polish is not thread sealant. Thread locking compounds are anaerobic(cure in the absence of oxygen) and cure and seal threads by reacting with metals in the absence of oxygen when the connection is tight. Nail polish cures by solvent evaporation and shrinks as it dries. Naphtha(Coleman fuel) will also break down nail polish. So, it might be ok in a pinch to help lock a nut on a bolt, which are running threads, it won't be a good thread sealer for tapered pipe sealing threads. While no sealant is usually needed on stove and lantern threads, if you do use one, use a product like a LocTite or Gasoila that's designed to seal threads carrying naphtha or gasoline. A little goes a long way and a can/tube will last for many years. Having even a tiny glob of gooey nail polish running through your generator could cause issues when you need your stove or lantern most. I've rebuilt or repaired hundreds and hundreds of these over the years. The coil spring surrounding the cleaning needle should be free and come out of the tube. If it doesn't, the generator is NOT CLEAN. Solvents are ok to use, but a propane torch is a work saver that will literally burn away the gunk/carbon deposits in there and the spring will come out easily. Then you can run a bore brush through it and clean the spring. Heat up the generator with a torch and soon, a lot of nasty smoke will start pouring out. You can light this smoke to keep the fumes down. This smoke is the gunk burning away. Keep the heat on it until no more smoke comes out. Then drop it into cold water to thermally shock it. Usually, the spring will fall out after a tap or two. Sometimes you need to persuade it a bit. If you clean them every few years, they will outlast you and me. The threads on the packing nut should NOT get any sealant or locker or teflon. Packing nut threads are running threads and do NOT seal anything. The purpose of the packing nut is to compress the graphite packing that hugs and seals the valve stem. That nut NEEDS TO BE FREE TO TIGHTEN if a leak does happen. It won't loosen in operation. If anything, you can actually lubricate those threads so it CAN be adjusted easily if necessary. Most inner tubes are made with natural rubber, butyl rubber, or a combination of the two. Neither are oil or fuel resistant. You can use them in a pinch, but don't use them as a replacement for the real thing. Nitrile(buna-N) or viton(FKM fluoro elastomer) are good and best choices respectively. They ARE fuel resistant and will last a LONG time with no issues.
I watched your video twice. I hope you don't mind if I critique a bit. First. You need to add a disclaimer at the beginning of this video. These coleman stoves are meant to run on camp fuel/white gas. Not unleaded gas. The additives in gas are bad for the generator and will get bad carbon build up and basically destroy the generator. Two. Buy loctite blue. Don't use nail polish as a thread locker/ sealer. The rod is brass and cannot corrode. That was carbon build up which comes off if you soak it in vinegar and use steel wool. And finally soak your pick up tube in vinegar for a few hours and blow out all holes. Yours was still dirty. I noticed when you restarted the stove and the flame near the burner was dancing. Be careful using thread tape. Just clean it properly and that stove will last another 100 years...
