How to Fix a Dead Western Digital Hard Drive - HDD Repair 

I so appreciate your description here. I just lost my C drive two weeks ago. Fortunately, I had saved all my documents on a separate drive. I spent so much time and money restoring software. I was just so disappointed that so much was lost. Watching you reminded me that I had a USB connection to several types of hard drives. My C drive was only a few years old, so I plugged it in and it came up. At present, I'm coping everything over to my new hard drive (a solid state) in a new file called old C. I couldn't be more happy. Thanks for the inspiration.

This was very fun to watch and learn. I don’t know how GLaDOS survived being inside a disk operating system, but hard drives work in mysterious ways.

I want to stick in one model, so that it will be easier to fix in case one breaks, I can take the board of another HDD just to recover my data. wow so glad i found your video. I have a dead wd drive with critical audio files on it. I sent it to me repair place and they sent it back. they said it was impossible to get the data. Nice you male it look easy lol My drive can show up in bios, Not everytime. but when loading into windows it whines, and delays the load in. like a electrical straining sound. Then stops and is silent and doesn’t show in windows It was working with a folder open, in the background. Then came back to the folder 30min later and it wasn’t open, and noticed it didn’t show up in ‘this pc’ my computer. I did all the usual different data port and cables, after a couple of try’s I unplugged it to minimise damage What do you think?

Hello , I have a question ! My HDD died few week ago , symptoms were slow loading , so i copied the most important fast , and then it failed , I got an error message and the HDD wasn't detected anymore , after a restart , my pc would be in a black screen , no BIOS no nothing just a black screen , when I removed the HDD , the PC would start normally , what could be the cause ? please help :D

Great vid. I have Western digital external drive. I attached it to a new adapter but the drive isn't spinning. Would putting a new controller board on it possibly fix that? Or, could the motor just be shot?

I have a Western Digital similar to the newer one that you show in this video. If I suspected that the board was bad on that device, and had a donor board to try, would it be as easy to remove the board and replace it with the donor as it was with the older board in the video?

I have a 3tb Seagate drive that has just stopped working and it is no longer recognized in windows (including device manager etc). The drive spins up for a bit then I hear this sound: "click, click, beep. Click, click, beep" after the second beep you can hear the HDD spin down and then nothing. It's still recognized in my bios utility software. I removed the casing to check the platter and the heads were not stuck on there, so I'm confused as to what could be causing it. Any ideas what my next step should be? I'm praying I can get it to work long enough for me to get a replacement drive and transfer the contents to it

hello computer tech what a great video,it really gave the basics of a hard drive,maybe you can help me on this,office max ,where I bought my units did not help that much,my original drive from 2008 just spins and gets very war to hot in the center where the IC chip is,same as the first,the 3rd one is a western dig,it kind of works for say,1min,I can see al the photo& song files,it too spins and gets warm,is the problem the circuit board itself,or is the arm stuck and has to be reset to the start,or could the tips of the arm have broken off ,like I have seen on some videos be the cause,,can you take the disk out of a new one,wheather the brands are different,and put the one from your bad drive ..will this work,,any help on this would be great,thanks dan diorio,,

HI. I have a WD 2500YD that makes a clicking sound when power is put to it. I was hoping the arm was stuck to the platters like I saw in many videos but this isnt the case at all. When powering on with the case off i see the clicking is the arm trying to move but it cannot. It is free as are the platters so I don't know where to go from here.

I've had a drive that's been dead for years now and it's a 250GB WD PATA drive like the one in this video. I have a near identical one that's functional but the board as a donor didn't get the drive working. I found yet another 250GB WD drive but with a SATA interface (that barely works). It got the PATA drive moving mechanically but gets stuck after a few clicks and then nothing. I'm not skilled enough for replacing the firmware chip though. I think the clicks might be another issue altogether though.

Makes me reind how far behind the storage technology is trailing behind. 1 or 2 tb used to be a sweet spot 10 years ago. It still is. Anything above 4 TB Is ridiculously expensive. With all the data we generate now, storage industry is in the dinosaur age. 10 years is an eternity in tech. I had IDE 1TB drives. And I have SATA 2tb ones.

Hello. No matter which usb storage I connect to my computer, I get a message (It's an error) And win11 gives you the option to scan and fix the problem. The problem is that this also happens with newly formatted external USB 2 hard drives. Also usb2 memory pen. Always when windows tries to scan and repair the disk, CMD (scandisk /f e:) it always says at the end that it failed and could not repair. during this process things on the disk were deleted and other things were done. Some of the content is now more damaged than before! On a usb hdd disk, I formatted with full format and afterwards I did a full sector scan without any errors. After copying a few files, win 11 started complaining. Why? One of the explanations is that it is windows. I have experienced this with 4 USB HDDs and several USB sticks

I've done board-level repair to a few HDDs (a few different brands) and have found most of them to still be reliable. It seems to me that if it is not heat killing the microprocessors on these boards, it's cheap PSUs that allow some AC ripple current to pass on the 5v and 12v rails and kill many HDD boards. I do not envy the people who choose to work in the data recovery industry.

transferring the firmware was great. however, you did not transfer the eeprom chip from the old board to the new one. you need the data specific to the platters, surface errors, replaced sectors, usage info etc. you should to move the eeprom too.

Mine died, sadly I installed windows on HDD , big mistake. Install windows on your SSD. Lasted 8 years.
