Over the years, the socket for the lightbulb in the base of my lava lamp became loose until an arc was occurring which made the lamp unsafe to use. I have debated what to do for a long time, not wanting to throw something I enjoyed away. I decided to pry open the base and see if I could fix it. The results were much better than I thought.

Whoa!!! There's a way easier way to fix it, that doesn't involve tearing the bottom apart. All you had to do was undo the nut at the bottom, then use a screwdriver to release the strain relief holding the power cord. Once the cord and socket are loose, pull from the top and fix it. No reason to mangle that base

Do you know where I can order a new power cord with the socket?, Or if I can buy a universal cord that would work? The inside of the Lava lamp base says AV 12volt

Excellent! Do you know if that metal bracket that screws to the socket is sold separately?

you could have just pushed the wire in, the black plastic piece and all. The socket will just fall out after that with the wire attached

@vb7200. You're right I could have, but screwing the socket back in was an issue that needed to be done with bottom plate off. I also would have had to cut the on/off switch and plug to get the cord through the hole. For my lamp's issue, the video repair was the best way for me.

@@LivingaSustainableDream Ah, I see. I had a bulb get stuck on me once and that's what I ended up doing after breaking the bulb. I had to wrestle with it quite a bit to get it out. I can see where in some situations it wouldn't be the best way to go about it.

It would be nice if the company making the lamp had made an easy access port on the bottom of the lamp to fix issues like this. I'm afraid most people just throw the lamp away into the landfills when they get this difficult to repair.

Does the water globe just pull off? Mines seems stuck and the bulb is blown to my knowledge.

I lost mine when I was a teenager and I put an antique, glass, insulator on top of it. It was better than nothing.

@Nick, sorry, too much on my plate right now to do extra projects. Give it a try, have fun, and be safe. You'll have a great story to tell about the lamp when you finish.
