How To Fix a Leaking Toilet Tank - Toilet Tank Repair - Remove Rusted Toilet Bolts

For a toilet tank that is leaking, you will need a toilet tank repair kit. This will repair a leak from the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl and the gasket that joins the 2 pieces.
Most toilet tanks are held onto the bowl with 2 bolts. But there are some that have 3 bolts. Look at your toilet before going to the hardware store, you may need to purchase an extra set of bolts and washers.
You should be able to replace the bolts by using a large slotted screwdriver, an adjustable wrench and pliers. If the bolts are rusted in place, you will need a hack saw blade and locking pliers.
In most cases this is a pretty easy project. Be careful of the porcelain, it can be cracked if you tighten down too hard on the bolts.

Now I will at least have enough time to go to the store and buy the parts tomorrow. Thanks for this great video! I accepted the challenge and completely replaced all parts in the tank with a brand new all-in-one kit. I was afraid to buy the wrong parts at the local hardware store so I brought my tank with me. One tip - my toilet has a flush handle on the side of the tank. My kit came with a front flush handle so I improvised and kept my old side flush handle assembly. I had to bend the chain rod to hover above the flap. It worked perfectly. No more leaky tank and no more running toilet. The iron bolts in my tank were nearly disintegrated like yours.. I could not unscrew them so I hammered a flat head screw driver down on the bolt inside the tank and knocked them out easily.

You should really learn some basic home repair things. I grew up helping my dad do stuff and then I worked with my bf on many jobs. I was an electrician apprentice for awhile as well. I have fixed MANY things when my other bfs could not. You should FOR SURE have a basic tool set. RU-vid is very helpful. You can find almost anything you may need help with. There’s a few rules to keep in mind. ALWAYS turn off the electric AT THE BREAKER BEFORE doing anything where you might come in contact with the wire. ALWAYS turn off the water BEFORE doing anything where the water might leak. Measure twice, cut once, will save you A LOT of headaches. Measure 12 times if need be. There are MANY contractors out there that just rip people off and put “band aids” on the customers problem instead of fixing it the proper way. It’s sad because they will, for sure take advantage of the elderly, especially women. I would suggest in the future, looking on RU-vid for whatever problem you have and watch the video so you can see what they do and how they do it, then when you call someone, you’ll have a better idea if they are ripping you off or not. There is also an app called Nextdoor. It is very similar to Facebook but when you sign up it groups you in with people in and around your neighborhood. It’s great for recommendations. People are always on there asking for electricians, handyman, plumbers, contractors….and this way you know someone has already used them and we’re happy with the service they got

I too had to reconfigure the kit (same kit as shown here) to stop all leaks. No metal washer in tank and rubber washer immediately below the tank, so bolt, rubber washer, tank, rubber washer, metal washer, bolt and get this good and snug. That's the seal. Then the wing nuts are simply holding the sealed tank on the toilet base.

Well, lubricant didn’t help on the tank bolts. I did exactly what you did, used a hacksaw to cut bolts. But, bolts were so rusty and deteriorated, that I used an angle grinder and cut wing nut away from tank. Cleaned tank real good in bolting locations. Upon snugging bolting to tank, I put silicone on top of each slotted bolt head. Let it cure for 5 hours before subjecting them to water. A reminder, every once in a while check those wing nuts, and just tighten them some more. Repair was completed on 6-24-2020. Thanks for your video. 6-30-2020

Hi, In most toilets, there is a slight bevel on the bowl to prevent the tank from moving front to back. I usually try to tighten it down to touch that. You can have someone push down on the tank while you tighten. But if it's not leaking and you are scared to overtighten, just leave it. You can always tighten a little more in the future if it becomes a problem.

Thanks for the video! All, save yourself doing this every couple years and get brass or brass plated bolts. Secondly, contrary to some instructions, do not put anything but the brass bolt and the rubber washer inside the tank. A steel/zinc washer under the head of a brass bolt followed by a rubber washer will seep water (metal on metal), the washer will corrode, and you will be doing this all over again sooner than you want.

Dremels or Proxxon rotary tools are one of the best tools ever invented. Any time I'm up against a completely seized or corroded nut and washer, I simply think about the time my Army helicopter (CH-47) blew a hydraulic fitting far from my base. We were shuttling troops from from my base in Va. to Ft. Bragg North Carolina. That hydraulic fitting that blew was in a location that had a ridiculously stupid service port window, you could see it, and just about touch it with your fingertips. (Boeing engineers were asleep when they designed this service window. My helo was an older model, they fixed this in later revisions) but Ft Bragg didn't have the special tool needed to reach this simple fitting, as all their Chinooks were newer models than mine) A Blackhawk had to be dispatched hundreds of miles away to bring me a single stupid tool that gave me 6" of extra reach. Spent an entire day in a cow pasture with a full load of soldiers and their gear getting ready to be deployed. Almost no trees and the middle of summer, sitting looking at cow patties for half the day. Was supposed to be a quick in and out... So now, any time I find a tough seized nut, I remember that day baking in the sun to bring an annoying nut and toilet bolt issue into perspective. Still annoying though....

I am about to change my bolts. Just to confirm, the rubber washer was on the tank side right. Then his suggestion was to have the washer between the bolt & rubber washer. So nut, metal washer, rubber washer then tank. Basically the rubber washer touches the tank. Except for the metal washer & nut in between the tank & bowl. The order is metal washer then nut.

Metal washer goes underneath tank where there is no water. Rubber goes inside tank to keep water from leaking out of tank through bolt holes.

My kit came with rubber washers to place on both sides of the tank bottom. I think this is the proper configuration to ensure a watertight seal. One rubber washer will not cut it. I put a little silicone sealer on the upper-most 1/4" of the bolt shaft just under the head, then the rubber washer - resulting in a silicone seal bolt-head-to-rubber, and a rubber-to-porcelain seal to the tank. When you slide on the rubber washer, it pushes the bit of silicone up and makes a really nice little weld looking seal at the top. When the seal ages and it's time to replace, since the bolts are long, I lock 2 nuts together on the bottom of the bolt, and use them to hold the bolt as I break loose the original nut. All are easy to take off then; and you don't need to hold the bolt at the top to get it loose.

Thank you for this, it was well presented and thorough for me to understand in a few quick watches. I used your advice on the screws but did everything else by memory from disassembling all the additional parts. Now the toilet works flawlessly and no longer leaks, and I have peace of mind now that all the parts are new. P.S. I subscribed to the channel as well because I’m going to need help in the future on whatever project pops up around the house.

I will try this, because even after I thought I had tightened it pretty good, I still has a slight leak. Quite frustrating. I am assuming the bolts need to be dry before applying the silicon.

Hi. I think there is an error in the video. I don't think you should put a metal washer against the tank screws. The water will seep through the metal washer and the metal screw head to the threaded part of the screw and you will have a slow leak. It would be better to only use a rubber washer on the inside of the tank, or use a rubber washer first, then a metal one, then another rubber one.
@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel
@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel 9 лет назад
Hi, there are a few different bolt kits. Some come with 2 rubber washers. One for inside the tank and one for the bottom. This kit wants the metal washer above the rubber to keep it from flexing. The rubber washer is against the hole inside the tank to keep it from leaking. I do prefer 2 washers.
@P.B.Theriver
@P.B.Theriver 9 лет назад
You are exactly right, it is possible for water to seep past the metal washer in this type of configuration. All that is needed from the inside of tank is the bolt and rubber washer. But don't worry, screw ups like this leaves room for the professionals to step in and clean up the mess, lol
@alpierson3233
@alpierson3233 7 лет назад
It depends on the tank maker. American Standard & Kohler toilets really don't have the room for the nut underneath. Also, if it does rust again and the bold & wingnut underneath the toilet tight against the surface, your only option is cutting through the nut to get to the bold directly under the tank. Of course, you can try some kind of rust breaking spray, wait 24 hours and hope the very bottom nut frees up.

FIX IT Home Improvement Channel wrong my friend all you're doing is putting metal on metal the big flat head of the bolt is all the metal you need another metal washer under it the same diameter does nothing but give water a chance to get in metal washer is for underneath the tank no rubber on that side all the sealing is being done inside the tank with the water
@robertpeteski4389
@robertpeteski4389 9 лет назад
The crazy thing about it is one manufactures directions says the same as your video and the other is without the Metal washer. All I know is that metal on metal will leak some kind of seepage. Without the metal washer there is absolutely no leak.

I've got to tell you watching this video caused me more headaches. I took the tank off the bowl two times trying to find out why it was leaking. After talking to a plumber at a local hardware store I found out you did not need the metal washer, just the rubber washer through the bolt inside the tank. I hope this helps some of you.

Robert Peteski Hi, there are a kits with a few different setups. I've found if you have a bolt with a small head, the added metal washer helps the rubber washer to keep its shape. Sorry it didn't help with your toilet.

Excellent, just excellent. This played out like an exact technique for my toilet problem and repair - complete with the rusted bolt needing a hack saw. Only one piece of advice was missing: if your toilet is crammed between a wall and a cabinet, like mine is, it helps to be a contortionist. Or practice yoga.
