My toilet was leaking, so I called three plumbers asking how much it would cost for them to fix it. Assuming it was the wax ring that needed replacing, the lowest price I was quoted was $175. Then I searched for and found this video instead. And so with about fifteen dollars worth of supplies from Home Depot and forty five minutes of effort following your instructions one step at a time, I now have a working toilet and a dry floor. THANK YOU VERY MUCH and enjoy your cup of coffee!

Another tip for aligning the toilet with the flange bolts is to cut some plastic straws about 6" long and place them over the bolts. As you lower the toilet bowl onto the straws, they will slide right in place and onto the bolts. Great job as always, Leah! 👍

A small tip from my experience: Sometimes you unable to see a small leakage from water supply line, because it leaks about 1 drop in a minute. To test this kind of leakage you can use a regular toilet paper sheets. Just put it on a possible problem area (put on the floor below connection or wrap around the tube) for a couple of hours. It shows you whether leaks or not even if waterdrops will dry.

I’m not a plumber and I try to be a do-it-yourselfer whenever possible, but it’s frustrating to hear people complain about being ripped off by prices that professionals charge for simple repairs. We all know that time is money. You’re paying for their time as well as saving your time, so theirs a price for that. Do you really think someone is going to go into business, come over to your house not knowing exactly what all is involved, scheduling their day accordingly, and replace a wax ring on your toilet charging you only $40 or so? I think it’s great that this information is out there for those of us who wish to do it ourselves to save some money but don’t beat up the businessman who’s trying to make a living. I know people who would gladly pay the price to have someone else do it , just so they don’t have to mess with it or to free up their own time. Thanks for the video, very informative & appreciated.

I have a few questions I installed two new toilets and used the rubber wax less rings. Both my flanges are recessed into the tile just below the tile. So I used the blue ring which was included in the perfect seal box. So my first one I just saw is leaky 7 days after install and my other one is not leaking on floor but I put red food coloring g inside tank and when I came ba k to look at it the water inside bowl was red which is telling me it’s leaking somewhere but I can not see any water anywhere. My main question I guess would be should I just rude the double way ring which h might Insure a better seal?

Just installed my first wax ring today! One thing you could have mentioned. When I lifted the toilet, I forgot to cut the caulking! As a result, the fake tile flooring lifted up! Also, you may have to use shims if the toilet is uneven and rocking. I did that today and the results were beautiful 👍

Great instruction! I discovered a leak by noticing a wet spot on my basement ceiling and sure enough it was coming from the base of the toilet. I never replaced a wax ring before but your instruction showed me that the process wasn't so bad. The liquid solidifier was an awesome tip than I would have never known about if I didn't see it on your video. The good news is that replacing the wax ring was the problem and now everything is working great! Please keep posting great DIY content! I'm going to add some advice. If the flange is 3/8" above the finished floor(where it should be) use a regular bowl wax. The bowl wax is not designed to be a "waterproof" seal. It's designed to prevent odor and airborne moisture. There's a horn integral with the toilet. That horn will sit down inside the flange. If you use a bowl wax with the added plastic horn, the water will splash against that plastic horn. Sometimes, the flange is only 3" and using the extra plastic horn type bowl wax will distort the plastic and cause leaks. That's bad. Why the extra horn? If the flange is flush with the finished floor, the integral horn will be just above the flange, not down inside the flange. That's bad. So, they've made this double wax or an added horn to the wax to somehow mitigate that problem. Homeowners will often have a new floor added on top of an existing floor without raising the flange. That has caused more destroyed bathroom floors than anything else. A properly installed flange sits 3/8" above the floor. A master plumber with 44 years in the trade.. Believe what I'm telling y'all

I 1000% beleave you and Thank You, every dam vid says it should sit flush , mine is 3/8 above and here I’m thinking it’s F’d up. Good looking out 🙏

Don't use the 'funnel' type wax ring. Those fail far more frequently than the pain wax rings. Failure is mostly caused by a toilet that can move for some reason and by pouring hot water in the bowl and not flushing right away - causes the wax to melt. Make sure the wax is soft (with warm water) in cold weather before installing it. If it is too cold it can form a crack when placing the toilet on top of it. Dishonest plumbers install the funnel type wax rings for future business.

It helps to put a bead of DAP toilet bath caulking between the base of toilet bowl and the floor. The DAP bathroom caulking is water soluble until dries making it easy to wipe excess caulking off with a damp sponge. If it's ceramic tile sometimes especially on mansions grout is used instead of the DAP silicone bathroom caulking.

Thank you so much for dropping some knowledge on us! Love your videos . I installed a brand new toilet, but a couple months later dark blotches formed on the right side/front of the toilet. For some more context, I laid down sheet vinyl flooring. It’s on a slab of mostly leveled concrete. I caulked all around the toilet so not sure how it could be that, but that’s what I’m thinking it is. I used the wax ring that came with the toilet. It felt small and EXTREMELY SOFT. Like abnormally mushy. What’s the texture supposed feel like, good amount of resistance, right? Also, I learned there’s two sizes of wax ring? My flange had a break in it from the previous owner, so I had to buy an adapter/extension. Maybe I need a bigger ring? Going to cut out a portion of the affected flooring and lay some newspapers down to see where the possible origin is. Thx again for your contributions to society. Your influence touches so many. My neighbor and I were talking abt my problem, and she said I should check you channel on RU-vid. I said I knew abt her a while ago! 😎 thanks again!

At 75 years of age, after toilet bolt/Nuts supply line, have been removed, i just straddle the toilet and grasp the sides back by the tank, lift up toilet and waddle backwards until the toilet is out of the way. When the new wax ring is in place, i then place toilet back by eyeing the bolts and gently lower the toilet onto the wax ring. Once it is down, i rock the toilet gently to the sides pushing downward ensuring the toilet seats entirely onto the wax ring. Put the nuts onto the bolts, tighten and its done!

Thank you Leah! I'm in the same boat as @itsizzi and wear a lot of hats when it comes to home maintenance. Plumbing and electrical are two areas that I have never delved into so I really appreciate the thoroughness of your video. I know you uploaded this one 5 years ago but it is still helping us DIYers. Much appreciated 🙂

Wish I had watched this before spending $400 to replace the wax ring ! I did use your video to caulk a bathtub, worked like a charm and also did a friend's. She was so pleased. Thanks Leah, you are the best !!

Who charged you $400 to replace a wax ring? This upsets me to no end. I don't like to see folks taken advantage of which is exactly why I started SJD.

Thanks for Is video. I was so crushed when I saw a leak on my newly renovated bathroom. Plumber is coming back to take a look at his work. Glad it's not a big deal. Thought I'd have to retile the floor... 😂 thanks for putting my mind at ease ease 💗

Thank you, Leah! This video explained and showed me exactly what the wax ring does so that I understand it. When we moved into our house, the toilet was wobbly and it turned out that it had a cracked flange. You explain repairs so that any homeowner can get them done. Thank you!

Interesting, I replace wax rings all the time and usually set the toilet into a contractor bag over a towel after I've tilted enough water out unbolted. This would make for a funny prank, great video! And PLEASE do not just silicone the base and walk away. The old "maintenance tech" at my work would do that proudly and I had to come back and replace the flooring and clear mold and sewage from the crawl space. It's super cheap and easy to replace a wax ring, not easy replacing the rotted subfloor.

My husband and I know about the wax ring. We found out about the wax ring because we had a plumber come to our house to unclog our toilet. He used something called a “snake”. In using it he broke the wax ring. Following the steps in your video, you are right. Anybody can fix a leaky toilet. But I'd rather call a plumber. LOL. Your video lets me know if I'm being cheated or getting poor quality handyman work!

You are a great teacher. I had a plumber replace the wax ring, $125, but he set the toilet on old dry caulking that he didn’t even remove, and left a wobbly toilet, didn’t caulk around it, and the flange bolts are wobbly. Time for me to fix it and do it myself from now on.

I got lucky with the toilet wax ring. I gave each nut a half turn, which compresses the wax ring about 1/64 " and Voila, No more leaks. P.S: this won't always work but worth a try.

Thank you Leah for a well presented demonstration of a problem that scares the hake out of people who think that they never could fix or replace a wax ring. Outstanding in your attention to detail, easy to understand and your "can do" attitude towards us; the non plumbers.

Thank you for this video. My brother got very sick so I am living with him for a little while to help out. I was in the basement doing laundry and he flushed the toilet above and water started pouring down on the floor in the basement. It's been years since I changed a wax ring and flange out and you're video helped me refresh my mind lol Thanks again!!!
