You just saved me a fortune in repairs AND water damage, and all in about five minutes. This isn't the first time you've pulled my fat out of the fire, either; I saved even more money not long ago by doing my own drywall repair thanks to your videos (that one was so expensive, it probably wouldn't have happened if I hadn't done it myself). I know this video has been up for a while, but it's still doing work. I can't thank you enough.

❤️❤️You have been a lifesaver around the house! Thanks for this great tip - I had a feeling since it was just a drip there might be an easy way to stop the leak :) Way better than the hassle of finding the right nominal size, going to my hardware store (where nobody wants to help you look for anything ever), shutting off the whole house water...you get it. Leah, thanks so much for a to the point and effective video. We had recently turned our winterizing valves to cut water to the outdoor spigot, and the valve in the basement was giving me grief. Thought I had it fixed but then my wife pointed out the dreaded dripping sound. I tried turning the knob and it made it worse. I was so happy to find your video and even more relieved when your advice completely solved the problem. We all have our different gifts, and I thank you for sharing yours!

Yes, in a pinch this works. However if the washer is old and not pliable, this won't necessarily work. Go to the store and buy a stem valve replacement. 2 or 3$. Then the new washer will be good for 20+ yrs.

Thank you Leah! We just bought our first home and have been doing a lot of repairs, one of which was me panicking when the toilet shut-off valve started dripping after I pulled the toilet and started demo and prep for laying a new floor. I've had a darn drip pan under it for 2 weeks! I only made it halfway through your video before I ran to the garage, grabbed my crescent wrench, and tightened the nut --- and whaddya know -- that was it! The whole time I was trying to mess with the other two threaded connections... It was one of those slap-yourself-in-the-forehead moments after realizing I had been overlooking the packing nut you showed in this video. I've already watched a few of your other videos and tonight I am subscribing. You are a blessing and gifted educator because you speak clearly, simply, and confidently. Thank you!

One trick I found on numerous toilet plumbing leak calls, is that many of these older shutoff valves can seal on two settings. Full shut, and full open; but NOT in BETWEEN ! So, if the valve is open half way, and developing a leak, try opening the valve all the way. Often the leak will stop.

GREAT video, Leah, but my shutoff valve does NOT completely shut off the water to the toilet when I try to turn the handle all the way clockwise. Is there a simple fix for this (washers?) or do I need to replace the entire valve?
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 7 лет назад
Hi Doug, It sounds like you have a multi-turn shut-off valve. They tend to go bad really quickly. I would just replace the valve with a quarter-turn valve.
@DougCeleste
@DougCeleste 7 лет назад
Thanks so much for the tip, Leah, and yes, both bad ones are multi-turn handle shut-off valves. But get this: One of them under the toilet has an attached upright CYLINDER that is a couple of inches long and what purpose would that cylinder do for shutting on and off the water to a toilet?? It looks like a cylinder for an air rifle!!!

Hi Doug, It sounds like a water hammer arrester. I can't say for certain because I'm not looking at it first-hand, however, that's my best guess.

Good Tip Leah, but I would point out that when doing ANY kind of tightening on a plumbing fitting, valve, coupling , nipple, elbow, etc. it is a good idea to use a second wrench at another location close to the work to reduce the stress / flex you may put on the pipe in the wall.

Everything about this video is perfect. Tightening the packing nut just a little bit as shown in the video completely stopped the leak. When even a trip to the hardware store is a major hassle, fixing the leak almost instantly with a simple wrench is the best possible outcome.
@James-bv4nu
@James-bv4nu 5 лет назад
I would always use TWO wrenches to tighten any plumbing, one to tighten, and one to support the line. In the picture, you can see two nuts, one closer to the wall, and one you're tightening. Place a wrench on each nut. That way, if the pipe happens to be copper, soft, you would not be twisting the copper pipe.

@hitty9
@hitty9 5 лет назад
You guys are exactly right, and this is critical, not optional. Any pro plumber would never tighten without using a second wrench as a 'hold back' And I'd turn the supply off just in case your fixture crumbled when you put a wrench to it. Could create a flood otherwise.

@I C enlighten me please, so your telling me you can't hold back on the stop, so as to not place any force on the nipple itself. And 9 times out 10 an easyout will not work. But you keep loosening packing nuts a quarter turn and show how easy it is to stop a leak you created, for RU-vid hits and misimforming people and setting them up for failure.

@I C so you solder pipe all day, and an outsource company tests it for you, haha that's great. and By the way you definitely won't get that easyout to work on 50+year old galvanized pipe. You keep doing these videos though there amuzing.

This video saved my sanity!!! I had just finished changing a leaky faucet and it was leaking behind the shut off valve. I almost lost my marbles but this video was the first to pop up and I was done with the project in minutes. I can’t thank you enough.

Replace those old packing nut valves with 1/4 turn ball valves. The ball valves have fewer parts to leak.
@U2BER2012

I like the 1/4 turn valves, but I had to replace one for my sink, because it was corroded and started to leak ; probably due to: not using it in years and build up of mineral deposits. I'm thinking that maybe, turning them off and on, once in a while, keeps them from getting too much build up?

6 years later and this video is still helping! I was looking up how to replace my valve because the stem was leaking. The last thing I wanted to do was take apart the valve and install washers. Sure enough. 1/4 turn later it’s done!

Thanks for sharing this as I had a seized up valve that I broke free but it started leaking afterward from the stem. This jogged my thinking that I should try this. It worked like a charm and prevented an emergency visit from a plumber.

Ok, but how about option #2? Unscrew the packing nut (after turning off the water supply) and changing the washer?

Nice! Thank you for this trick. I haven't done much household plumbing. Not familiar with the internal mechanisms of such a valve. So seeing simply instructions like this from veterans with field experience is gold!

I owe you lots of hugs and kisses!!! I replaced my kitchen faucet yesterday and it went pretty well. Unfortunately, I noticed shortly afterwards that the shut off valve had a slight drip, similar to the one you illustrated. I was about to run to the store to buy a new shut off valve when I saw your video and viola, you solved my problem. I tightened the packing nut slightly and the drip instantly stopped. Thank you so much!

So so so grateful to you for this. My realtor took a GC on a walk-through of my place while I was away and lo and behold, the pre-sale work showed that I needed a plumber because of a leak that appeared during the walk-through! Thank you for helping me know that it was not a coincidence!!

I've been doing my own plumbing to save money, but am basically learning as I go. After a long day, I finished replacing corroded metal pipes with pvc under the kitchen sink. and was so proud of the end result... But, as I turned on the water at the water control valve, it started leaking. Everywhere. I nearly cried, and I really just didn't know where to start. I'm so thankful I found your video. It saved me extra money, time, and at least a little of my sanity. Thank you so much!

Thank you for posting your video. What started out with a small project for me turned into a bit more than I thought I could handle. I say this because the shut off valve was leaking and I was a little intimidated to remove it seeing as this was something I hadn't done before. I was thinking worst-case scenario something will start leaking and I won't be able to stop it. I watched your video and everything is fine now. I replace the entire valve, although on the old valve I couldn't easily get the plastic ring off or the nut on the pipe. I was able to use the existing nut and plastic washer with my new valve and I have no leaks. Thank you again and keep up the good work.

Amazingly simple fix! Thank you. And I appreciate that your video did not have any kind of intro or "inspirational" story about how you got into plumbing or how valves are made, but you went straight to the point.

Ma’am. Replaced an OLD dishwasher with a leak problem. The delivery men said they wouldn’t do it and we needed a plumber. Did it myself and noticed an old leak at the valve. Wasn’t ready for another headache and you just saved my tail!
