How To Fix A Rattling Heat Shield

Here is a short video showing you one way to fix a rattling heat shield. Remember jack your car up safely and secure it on stands. Also if you are not sure what you are drilling into...DON'T DRILL! Seek professional help. Sure would be a shame to ruin a wiring harness, or drill through your gas tank. Any how, hope this gives you an idea to use. Thanks for watching!

This is exactly what I needed to know! My car recently started rattling and I realised it was the heat sheild for the exhaust. Now I know how to do this! I can save time from going to the shop. Seems like a simple fix. Thank you!

Did this last night on my daughter's 2009 Corolla. Used the drill and screws method and it is great now. I do wish I had a lift because I only had ramps and it was a bit cramped working under there but it's all good now! Thanks for the video!

You need a pair of jackstand at full extension to be able to crawl under there.Ramps are too low.

Larger aluminum washers under the rivet head will provide a bit of stress relief allowing the repair to last longer. Obviously, the additional time/effort for the washers makes sense to those of us doing this ourselves and planning to keep the vehicle until delivered to the scrap yard.

Good point. The heads on rivets is pretty small and the heatshield itself is pretty thin metal.

Great idea, thanks for the video. In cases like this, I poke the rivet through a washer first to keep the head of the rivet from working it's way through the hole a little longer. Thanks again and keep up the great work. 😊

I am giving this a go on my own. ( going to roll/crawl under) my factory low to the ground, pain in the rear, Chrysler sebring 00 model. Mine came loose, lost half on the interstate. Thought my car was finally biting the dust. I know where it's at, my question is, if I don't see rivets, can I just use something to tie around it. The existing clamp is still there. I just couldn't seem to slip it back under. If I could it would probably come loose quickly anyways.

I thought it was my muffler the entire time! We were on the road last night and the car must have hit something on the road and then the rattling noise would not stop. When my husband told me this morning he looked underneath the car and said that was a piece of tin that was leaning to one side, I knew it was the heat shield. Thanks for clarifying it for me! Taking it to the shop to get it fixed this morning.
@RSole9999

"A piece of tin." The only tin in cars might be in the solder used in the electrical system. The metal in cars are mainly steel and aluminum. No tin.

Tell me about the noise! Holy cow, was sure my transmission was shot until I learned a thing or two about rattling heat shields. Mine only turns heads when I first start off from a standing position, then disappears completely. Only problem in saving money to repair it myself is getting under the car. So time to put on my grubby clothes and slide under there like a snake. Gotta do what we poor folks gotta do, right?!

Just fixed my 03 corolla heatshield. The shield had completely rusted away around 3 out of 3 bolts holding it up. The racket it was making was really unbearable. It would not have occured to me to use pop-rivets before watching this video(i was thinking the shield would have to be patch welded around the bolt holes, and I have zero welding skills). Took just a couple minutes and I can already feel some of my sanity returning with the noise gone now. THANK YOU!!

I've had this problem on my 2001 Astra. They tend to break around the original nuts so what I did was to undo the nuts and put a big washer between the nut and heat shield to hold it in place. I had a couple of them shear off but I still had enough to be able to hold the heat shields in place.
@Daedalus_UK
@Daedalus_UK 5 лет назад
I did this but I also put multipurpose grease around the bolt and both side of the surrounding heat-shield area and on the large washer and covered the nut. Any water or moisture will now not stay in place for it to rust in the same place.

Only the Toyotas I’ve owned have had this issue and it wasn’t with the old ones (like 1980s). Toyota started making the THINNEST shields, like Pepsi-can thin. Toyota needs to thicken that section (at each bolt hole) or use a very large washer under bolt head. That’s what I did after the heat shield fell off the bolt (bolt remained). If you hear metal rattling at a stop light idle and put car in neutral and it goes away, then this is most likely the culprit. In your driveway or other safe area, with car running, looking under car, you’ll see exactly where the sound comes from.

So the muffler heat shield on my 2007 came loose last weekend... I finally get around to googling for it and lo... this video pops up right at the top. E140 just like this one, looks like it's exactly the same one that's loose on mine. Only trouble is I don't have a nice big lift like that, so we'll have to see how well we can do with the jackstands.
