Although I have a lot of experience with such devices, I did not dare to unsolder the encoder. I poured pure alcohol over the encoder housing several times while pushing and turning the axis. Between alcohol washes, I blew with compressed air. Finally, I sprayed with teflon lubricant and wiped well. It has been working without problems for almost a year. If you don't have experience with soldering, you better not desolder the encoder because the copper tracks are very fine and can come off.
Correct. Usually, it's a brass tab which is rotated on pieces of brass. Usually lubricated with grease, this grease attracts dust/dirt and becomes congealed over time, causing poor contact. Sometimes brass / copper contacts inside to be tarnished. When you use electronic switch cleaner, it cleans off the old lube and de-tarnishes the metal slightly :) Much easier method to fix!
