As a professional irrigator this video is done really well! As much as we need to make money for a living, I am very mechanically inclined myself and there is an aspect of DIY that can be extremely satisfying for those that wish to. With that, I try to educate my customers however I can, especially if they are DIYers like myself. Some additional notes on this video, not all valves are the same design. Conceptually they all operate the same, but for a homeowner don’t fret if you have a Hunter, Weathermatic, Irritrol, etc valve unlike the RainBird DV series shown in the video. Just be sure you replace the valve top with one of the same brand and model! Some have four screws, some have six or more, and some don’t have any at all! The valve replacement will still go as intended as long as you match the correct top part to the base. In addition, when tightening screws on the valve it is important to tighten them following the same pattern you would as tightening lug nuts on a tire to ensure they tighten evenly.

When I moved to where I am now I found a sprinkler system it wasn’t connected to a water source nor a timer but I’ve been working on it for 2 years and the valves where the only problem now I know how to replace them. Thank you

Great video SC! Having a 4-zone system myself it, considering the nominal cost, would likely be a good idea to have a backup valve/solenoid on hand simply for piece of mind.

Thank you, it definitely is. I have always tried to keep 1 valve, 1 sprinkler head on hand, since when they break it can take a while to get replacements.

I did sprinkler installation all through high school. One of the things we’d try before replacing the valve was to just take out and wash that rubber membrane, especially if it was covered in sediment. It was a quick 10 minute fix, and often times it worked. Could at least save the cost of a replacement valve.
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Год назад
I totally agree, and that definitely can fix it if its not the solenoid. The only issue is by the time you do all that work you you may as well replace it, especially if the valves are older than 7 years but if less than that it could just be a blockage and its a great tip.

Using the bleed pen to flush debris through the valve is the first step, not in place of top ending the valve. Often a small bit of debris or grit gets trapped in just the right spot and the bleed pin will often allow this debris to flush through the valve and restore proper function. Do not misunderstand and rebuild the entire valve when flushing debris through the bleed pin would be perfectly adequate. At least try this first prior to rebuilding the valve, don't get me wrong. You may need to rebuild the valve but certainly try flushing with the bleed pin first and in some cases you may only need to replace the solenoid, so I believe this video is good but definitely oversimplifies . Also, this specific brand of valve is incredibly simple, anyone with any other brand of valve of which there are many, will have serious issues. Issues. Rainbird valves are so simple anyone could rebuild one, but Tora valves and other Hardy valves have a lot more moving parts and are incredibly complicated in comparison. Only. Try if you have this specific rain Bird 1-in valve

The charges to repair sprinkler systems are stupid. The lawn maintenance company at my work broke off a sprinkler head that was above ground, I told them they broke it and needed to replace it, they included $180 on the next bill for the 30 seconds they spent trimming the pipe and gluing on a fitting and the new head that's $11 at Home Depot.

I totally agree, I understand people need to make money but sprinkler repair is not being a dentist and there is no license involved. No idea how pricing got to where it is now.

How do you PROPERLY flush your valve without filling the valve box full of water? Its the grit and debris in valve body that keeps the diaphragm from working properly.
@someperson7

If you wanted to be extra OCD you could get a small stake and zip tie the wires in the upright position to said stake

How do you PROPERLY flush the valve? The grit/sediment/debris in the valve "body" is what stops the diaphragm from closing properly - which keeps the valve from working as it was designed

you can crack the main line valve for a second or two to flush it out

Have you tried the Service Buddy? A tool so you don't fill valve box w water and won't have to wait (cigs are bad) can flush all grit etc out of valve body with no water in valve box
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Год назад
I wouldn't bother with that. A simple trick to avoid water it is just open up one side of the valve a little to let it slowly drain. You won't find any pros using a flushing tool, at most they might use this amzn.to/3cynz2j and you could pump as it fills.
@johngarcia4504
@johngarcia4504 Год назад
how can I send you an email? This product was on INNOVATION ROW at last year's Irrigation Trade Show in San Diego - and service techs from across the country -Canada-Germany use the Service Buddy so they don't have to spend time pumping out a valve box. takes less than 15 min to remove replace a diaphragm flush the grit out of valve all while keeping a completely dry valve box. It's engineered for drip tubing or funny pipe since all service techs carry both in their service truck

Silver cymbal I have a question, what do you do with the equipment you review in your videos? Do you keep all of it? And the equipment you already have/keep where do you store it?
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Год назад
It depends a lot of it is returned to the company, a surprising amount of samples I get are dead or what I deem unacceptable even show, those are also returned or thrown out and the things I really like I will keep and use. I might start making a shorts video of the bad products just to share what set me off about certain ones,.
@dudeurodude3845
@dudeurodude3845 Год назад
@@SilverCymbal Thank you for answering. I find it makes a lot of sense to return items but since you reviewed/own items such as the ego zero turn mower or the walker mower with multiple attachements along with the time cutter and other large pieces of equipment I figures you had a garage/shop. I think making shorts of the unused items is a good idea and that maybe giving the items away instead of throwing them out could become a possibility.

A bad diaphragm is not always the cause of a stuck sprinkler zone, sometimes it could be a bad solenoid, and you can troubleshoot that by putting the solenoid from the valve that runs the stuck sprinklers onto another valve then use the timer to turn that valve on and see if the sprinklers from that valve gets stuck on, and if that's the case then you found your problem would be the solenoid. I find it is about a 50-50 chance of being a bad solenoid or a bad diaphragm.
@washingandmowing15
@washingandmowing15 6 месяцев назад
i haven’t seen a bad solenoid cause a stuck open valve before but that’s something to look for now! i have seen solenoids cause stuck shut valves though
@derekathey4616
@derekathey4616 Год назад
Try just manually turning on the valve and then turn it off. It's not a temporary fix. Sometimes a hard water deposit can become dislodged and get in the diagram.
