How to Fix a Wonky Window Blind ~ Rick's Tips

Hi! This week I want to share with you how I fixed my wonky window blind! I have had this problem before and no matter if the blind is cheap expensive or in between, it seems to happen soon or later! One day when we went to pick up our daughters instrument from the music store, it occurred to me that the answer was there! Rosin!
Yes, that's right rosin, like they use to "rosin up the bow" for a violin or fiddle. This would give me the friction I needed to keep the blind straight and keep it tacky enough that it would not be slippery through the pulley.
So check how I did it. This was a quick and cheap fix to a frustrating problem that I am sure many of you have encountered.

haha this video helped me accidentally. I didn't have any rosin, but I was taking a closer look at how the cords connected to the gears, and when I moved the problem one just a tiny bit to the left, I heard a little click, and the blind dropped right into place haha. I had been fiddling with it for like ten minutes last night, to no avail.

Just like another poster wrote I had no rosin and it was 100 degrees out. I used a white taper candle and rubbed against string. Then i took the pointed in and stuck and rubbed it in where the release was. Blinds released right away.

I loved the video. It actually got me thinking outside the box. I ended up using grip ski wax which is used for cross country skis. It worked just like Rosen.

I didn't have rosin so I tried candle wax, rubbed an old votive on the cord... Worked! Thank you!

It would also help to remove some of the excess weight by taking the extra slats out.

Hi Rick it worked as u said, bought the rosin at a music store tuned it on the string & presto it holds no more drooping. I called a number of blind sellers & they never seen this problem before. I guess u & I r the only ones along with a few others here that r having troubles with there blinds. Thanks again, Dave

I just used this tip, and it worked like a charm. My 20-year old blinds once again stay level, thanks to a $6 bit of rosin I got on Amazon and Rick's fantastic tip. Thanks so much! It feels like a miracle after all the time struggling with them!

Also...you should open your blinds so they are horizontal before raising or lowering them. I like your style, Rick....a beverage aids any problem🤣

Omigosh, I've been wondering how I'm gonna fix those wonky blinds in my kitchen forever. It finally occurred to me that perhaps I can find a fix on RU-vid; figuring I'd have to take the blinds down and tweak the brake mechanism somehow. But this is amazing! And--for reasons I will not bore anyone with--even though no one in the household plays a bowed instrument, I already had a rosin block in the house. I could have fixed the blinds well over a year ago. THANK YOU!!

Thanks Rick. I had a wonky 6' wide blind with three pull cords. The one furthest from the locking mechanism has slipped for a couple of years but after watching your video and buying a $5 block of rosin the problem is solved. Great suggestion!

Shop always have a standard answer when one is encountering problem with item purchased. Never ever heard of a blind getting stuck🎉😂

I thought of the same thing. I have a rosin bag like they have on a pitcher's mound, so I rubbed the cord with that. Didn't work. But now I'll go back and try again.

Silicone spray works better. Spray it into the gears so they move and grab. Also spray it into each area where the strings go up into the header. Be sure to get dry silicone. Food grade works best and won't run and stain.

It never occurred to me that stickiness would help. I live in a small town and knew I couldn't find rosin here. So .... I used the stickiest hairspray that I had. And it WORKED!!! Thank you!!!

Thank you for the video! I just now went outside looking for some wild pitch. Found a small fir tree in our yard, looked it over, found a drop of clear sap. Touched it with my finger and brought it inside. Rubbed the drop between my index finger and thumb. Located the slippery string and gently ran small sections of the string through my sappy fingers. I was afraid I may have put too much on, but, It Worked! True, I had to deal with *really* sticky fingers afterward, but wife let me use some of her nail polish remover and with a little work I got unsticky fingers back. Thanks again. and sticky thumbs up.

If the blinds are tilted too far in one direction don't move them up and down. Straighten them out a bit first.

The problem is the cord on one side no longer holds to keep them straight. That's what this video addresses.

Twirl the tilting wand on opposite side of the cords for up & down. I swear this really works. The stuck blinds come smashing down. 😆😆😆😆😅😅😅😅😅 Now wasn't that simple!!!!!!!!!! Found this out after hours of RU-vid Vids complicating the fix. Kinda' by accident too. WAND TWIRL. Who'd of thought!

My faux wood blinds have a similar issue to yours, but not as severe. Whenever I pull the blinds up, it hangs slightly lower on the left side than the right. The company sent me a new blind to replace the "bad" one and the new one is still doing the same thing. Any ideas on what could be wrong or what might fix my issue? Any help would be much appreciated.

You can try adjusting the strings by pulling one or the other until the blinds are level and then carefully tying a knot so they'll stay this way whenever you raise the blinds.

So here I just found out something, just hold down the side that is not going down for example if your left side is not going down and the right is hold the left and pull it down then pull down the wire it worked for me and it's much easier. Hope I helped

I seem to be having the opposite problem, where one side will not come down. Hmm. Does anyone have any answers?

Follow the string to the top and check to see if it has come off the barrel and got wedged somehow. If not , while pulling down on the strings with your right hand (to unlock the barrel) gently pull down on the blinds with your left hand while allowing the strings to move back up through without locking the barrel. If neither of these work then you probably have internal damage on the string and the blind will most likely need replacing.

It sounds like your cord has frayed and seperated. If this is the case I'm afraid replacing the whole blind may be your best option.

What about when the blind falls from the top. The string bursts. Can it be repaired. They're pretty expensive.

Hey Rick! Thanks for the awesome tip! Are you concerned at all that the rosin will shake off, kind of the way it does on a violin bow, and gum up the gears further?

I didn't have that problem. This was just my suggestion to get a little more life out of a somewhat expensive and otherwise still good window blind.
