Thank you so much Igor! Your video had very clear instructions and by following it exactly I managed to replace my screen. Very happy right now. Feels like a brand new Nexus 5 after this replacement. From here on out I won't look at my reflection on the Nexus 5 to check my hair combing while longboarding to class lol, it fell on some sidewalk and shattered incredibly!
Igor Kadulenkov - Thank you very much. I would never have been able to replace my own screen without your guidance film. Very much appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks for the video! In case it's useful to others, I ran into an issue with the volume up/down button - the logic board was positioned a hair too close to the up/down button, so that the down button would get pressed simultaneously with the up button almost every time. I resolved this issue by repositioning the board correctly and making sure to *not* screw the top part too tight, because that also caused the issue.
Hi Igor! Thanks a lot for your video! It's the one that I liked the most cause it explains thoroughly and precisely each step. I just finished to fix my Nexus 5 and it works beautifully!!!! Lots of good karma coming your way mate! ;-) CHEERS!
Hey thanks for the video. Got mine replaced with no problems! Next time, try not to sound like youre being forced at gunpoint to do the video, but try to be more loud and clear and walk us through what youre doing more thanks!
Quite useful.. But I would advice plastic tool instead of screw to remove component, and transferring part side by side can be helpfull to not mix up the placement.
Steven, cannot answer you directly for some reason. The plastic bezel appeared to be original at first. But then i discovered these issues: the rubber coating started to fade out after a couple of months. I also got some issues with screen backlight. Otherwise it was close to original with the LED and filter included. Basically I just had to reinstall all the detachable items and it was looking and functioning the same as original. When you buying a screen, look specifically for the word "original" in the name of the lot. That way you will minimize the chance of buying a fake screen.

Hey Igor, what kind of screen backlight issues did you have?
Leonardo Polly Assumpção Hey Leonardo. Please look at this picture: www.dropbox.com/s/1yzkfcgm4a4fc2n/_MON2956.jpg?dl=0 If you can notice, there are visible circles that are brighter than the rest of the screen. I also got cracks on each side of the frame without even dropping the phone. The guy at aliexpress said that it was not his screen :)) I did a chargeback with my bank.

Igor Kadulenkov D: damn, that's bad. Did this appear after a long time of use? Or was it on the first days?
Leonardo Polly Assumpção The ones on the picture been there from the beginning :) So when you buy a screen, make sure there are many good reviews on the product/seller and that he states it as Original, not "high copy"
Hi clawbl, youtube doesn't allow me to answer directly to your comment. As far as i know D820 and D821 are visually the same. The differences are in connectivity. The radios in each phone are a little different. "The D820 version of the Nexus 5 is designed for North America and will connect to 2G, 3G or LTE on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. The D821 version of the Nexus 5 is set up to work with the rest of the world." For the screen supplier - you never know which one is better. I would check for reviews for every seller and try to look for words "original" or "OEM" in description. With the seller in USA it's probably easier to return defective item. Like etradesupply(see a link in video description) gives 180 days of warranty.
Igor Kadulenkov Thank you very much! I'll look around aliexpress a bit more, might find something good :). Also, someone from Europe just told me on another forum I asked that they purchased the d820 screen+digitizer+housing from etradesupply and it worked fine on their d821 phone.
First off I wanted to say excellent video and instructions...thanks for posting. Only issue I am having after screen/frame install is the bottom speaker is not working. Any suggestions to fix this?
+Omar Nunez Hi Omar, thanks for feedback! For the speaker - i would double check the contact of the bottom plate , that's attached at 9:24. The speaker is inside it.
It seems like the caption on the screen (2:26) say that if I just remove the back cover, I can replace the screen without taking the phone apart? Seems so much easier.
+Adam M You can't replace the screen without taking everything out. What i meant is you can remove the bottom cover and check the new screen before installing it, by connecting it to main harness and turning the phone on.
Nice, just got my Nexus 5 transplanted to a new frame. Almost perfect transplant. However I cannot get the top of a back plate aligned as in original assembly :(
Michał Krasowski By back plate you mean back lid ? Check if you broke the snaps on the lid while cracking the phone open. I also had this type of problem with low quality frames, where the lid would not snap in easily.
Igor Kadulenkov Yeah it seems that the frame and quality is far from original, since back lid snaps are in perfect shape and they do not match up with frames slots. Besides, touch screen seems not to work on edges. I guess I shouldn't expect more from $60 lcd+frame set. At least I do not have dreaded noise cancellation mic problem I've recognized on my second nexus 5 ;)
Michał Krasowski I haven't been replacing them lately, but before i could get OEM frame for ~$100. I would say they should be a bit cheaper now. So it's just a bad luck with a screen for 60 bucks. You may even try to return it. The frame on this video appeared to be very low quality, it's literally cracking everywhere on the sides and falling apart.
Hi. Thanks for the video, it's going to be really helpful when I get my hands on repairing my phone. I have a non-US nexus 5 (d821) with a cracked screen. I'm looking to purchase the full screen frame, but the link you provided in the description (etradesupply) seems to be only for the d820 model. Do you know by any chance if it is compatible with the d821 nexus 5? I don't really trust the quality of the ones they sell on aliexpress, even though those seem to be compatible with both models (d820 and d821).
Hey... My nexus 5 doesn't show network at all... I tried switching it off and on... I replaced my simcard with another Sim card just to check if the Sim card isn't proper... However even the other Sim card didn't show any network.... What can be wrong? Is something wrong with the motherboard? Can it be repaired?please help!
Abhay Sundesha Hi Abhay, sorry to hear that. Did that appear as result of changing the screen? If so, try to check your antenna connections - long black and white cables on the sides of the frame.
Igor Kadulenkov Phone works fine except no cell towers/network/connectivity whatsoever. Checked the antenna connections, but no dice. What do you recommend?
the repairman that fixed my phone had used glue to place a new screen on the same frame so now there is glue spreading under my screen which is now effecting my usage of the phone, I brought it back and he fixed it again using the same method and this problem has repeated itself.
Hi.. I'm getting vertical black lines on my nexus 5 display where white letters are coming and the lines are moving around with the letters. Touch is working perfectly but display gets hot and battery drain fast. what could be the reason and how can i fix it. .? if i need to replace the display, which is the best available display on ebay..?/
Hmm it's hard to say. Looks like you getting some interference to the signal to the screen. Maybe this is to do with the screen cable or with logic board. You can try replacing the screen, but i can't guarantee that it's the reason. For the available screens - i didn't buy them for a while, so cannot really advice. The only thing is try to search for listings where they say "original". They never use "original" on low quality screens listings.
Hello Igor, good job on the DIY video, really appreciate it, i have a quick question though. I didnt have the time to put aside to by the display and change it myself, so i took it to a shop in my area to replace it, now, the colors seem almost exactly the same, and the touch works fine and all, but the matte black on the edges feels different than the back cover. Is this is a telltale sign that my screen could be fake or non-oem? the glass also looks like its popping out quite a bit, to the point where i could see the LCD light through where the glass touches the edge of the phone. Im obviously gonna go complain and hopefully they return my old display. Im also wondering, would you recommend etradesupply to pick up OEM parts? this is where im planning on buying my display from.
Edwin Alegria Hi Edwin, looks like the frame that they used was not original. I had the same problem with the frame that you can see on this video. All the rubber finish on the sides got wiped in a couple of months, i also got cracks in the sides of the frame and i can also see some light in between the screen and frame edge. They probably saving on the parts, i think the original quality screen is worth $100 or so. Never used etradesupply, i usually order from Aliexpress or ebay, but i specifically look for words "original oem" in titles. Good luck!
Thank you for the reply, I did end up purchasing from etradesupply, I did get my screen today as well, I've installed it and it fits perfectly, it seems to be OEM, and the textures match, so far, it works a helluva lot better than the last display.
I can't beleive it. I somehow lost that tiny, crescent shaped piece you remove at 5:23. Is it possible to use a small piece of aluminum foil in it's place?
Eva VanAken It's not a big deal. I replaced about 7 screens on nexus 5 and i can't recall always moving that little sticker. I think you should be fine. :)
I used a similar frame/screen to fix my nexus 5, but when I put it together again it would not connect to the camera. I redid all the connections a few times and my camera worked in the old frame/screen. Would you have any idea why the cameras are not working?
Duckie4g Hi. Do you have that with both cameras? Antenna camera connection doesn't involve any frame parts. It's basically your logic board and the camera that you move from your old frame. I would assume that your logic board doesn't fit correctly in the new frame and puts pressure on camera connectors harnesses and they get disconnected when you screw on the top cover? Try to look if the firm connection persists when you reopen the frame after the camera failed.
I ordered a replacement screen for nexus 5 and although I knew it was better to buy with frame I got confused and bought without because D821 hadn't other. They don't let me to cancel my order and reorder the replacement I want. Is this really a problem? To change the screen with no frame replacement?
+Αννα Παπαδοπούλου Hi , no. You can still do this, try to search for other videos on RU-vid. I did that 5 times actually, you just need to detach everything from the frame, then put the frame into an oven for like 2-3 mins ( i think it was 160F) and then use one of these small suckers - attach to the glass and pull. Then insert a mediator between the screen and the edge and go around it until it comes out. Then you will need to install the new screen. Ideally you need a special glue, put it back in the oven, press the screen in and then let it cool down.
Question: I have successfully installed my new screen on the nexus 5. Everything works perfectly except when in my case now speakerphone echoes for the person on the other end. The same exact case never did this b4, and it doesn't do this out of the case. I've opened the phone back up and nothing near the mic = \ suggestions?
Mitch Barber Hi Mitch. This issue is really hard to diagnose, the possible cause is the lack of isolation between speaker and microphone. Are you sure you installed all the rubber components back into the new frame? Is the echo still there if you use a headset?
Thanks for the video. I replaced my screen but moments after replugging in the battery the phone started getting very hot. Noticeably the left side, the heatsink on the edge side of the back camera and the left side of the battery or possibly the cable feeding down to the lower section of the phone. Thoughts?
tantryl hmm never had that. Is that a constant condition? I.e. maybe it's has a software cause, or having the screen on for a long time? Also, it's a known issue that nexus 5 overheats if you have apps running when it's on charge.
Igor Kadulenkov the heat problem occurs when the phone is off. Which I suppose means something must be shorting out or the battery is damaged, now that I think about it. I'll pull it apart and put it back together again and see how it goes.
+Jonathan Fernandes check that antenna cables are not in the way on the sides. Also there's a clip in the middle of the back cover. It should attach to the top internal cover
Hi Igor!! I've followed your instructions and everything works fine, except that I noticed a little flicker in the screen. Any chance you've seen it before?? It might be due to the quality of material anyways... Thanks a lot!
Daniel Porto Hi Daniel, what kind of flicker? I would say if both screen and touch are working fine in general, any other unusual behavior would be due to quality issues. Is that something with screen back light? I guess you can try to reconnect the main screen harness on the bottom of the back of the phone. Hope that helps.
Yes. It makes sense. I noticed that when the screen switches on after a few seconds a few horizontal lines show up. I will reconnect the cable and if it doesnt work, I guess I have to live with it... it would be likely to be due to quality of the component .
Daniel Porto There should be no lines of any kind on the image. Try to reconnect it, if it still there, sounds like an issue with a new screen. I would try to return it if you still can, it can get worse really quick.
Hi Igor, my nexus 5 got wet so I put it in rice and waited for a couple of days for it to get dry. I turned it on but the touch screen isn`t working, is there a way to fix it or do i have to go through this process and replace the whole display? Thank you so much in advance!
Sonia Dorantes Hi Sonia! It's hard to tell. Are you sure there is no moisture inside? I would open the phone, disconnect the battery and check for any moisture inside. Then i would remove the bottom cover and disconnect the main screen harness, maybe blow some air in there and let it dry like this for a few hours. Then reconnect everything and see if it works. If no, i would suppose that yes, you would have to replace the digitizer. You may get just the screen without the frame, could be cheaper a bit than buying the whole frame. But then you would have to check some other guide where they leaving the old frame in.
hi igor i need help with some thing my screen on nexus 5 seems not brokeen but when you enter the power button it seems the screen is broken do i need buy something to fix it or can i fix without anything thanks.
one of my friend changed screen but now touch screen doesnt work so i can not even write my pin. i can not use it at all :( do you have any suggestion?
+Ozlem Erguc The new screen is probably defective if the touch is not working. I would try to reconnect the main harness . If not, i would return it and ask for replacement.
Hi I have a nexus 5 821 and I just replaced the screen but now my phone runs very very slow. The start up animation goes frame by frame and after that the phone's lock screen comes up for only a second and then goes all black even when I press the lock button. Do you know what this could be?
Eric Ferlenda Sorry i missed your question. Hmm not sure what is the problem here. Maybe it's not charging? Check this help page from google - support.google.com/nexus/troubleshooter/3337561?hl=en#ts=3337943 Could also be a dead battery, yes, if it's not taking the charge for some reason. I would try to also disconnect the main harness, blow some air in there and connect back nicely. And do the same with battery connector and clean the charging port if it's dirty. Hope that helps.
Hi. This is digitizer and frame alltogether. I bought it at aliexpress.com. But beware, they have some fake stuff too. Look for reviews on the items. You can also find this stuff on ebay.
Hi all, I have accidentally ordered the black version of the frame (with black speaker grid instead of the white one). Does anybody know if I can mount it on white version of Nexus 5 without problems (mechanical or software) ?
Enrico Ronconi Hi Enrico, yes you can. The only difference is the grid color and the sides of the frame are matte rubber finish instead of glossy finish on white Nexus.
Igor Kadulenkov I've just mounted it, the screen works perfectly. The only thing I noticed is that the sim holder and the button doesn't fit perfectly on the black frame. Anyway the rest it's perfect, thank you very much for the video and for the quick reply!
Enrico Ronconi Hi Enrico, this is strange, as far as i know, there should be no issues with alignment. Maybe the screen is not of the best quality? Otherwise, i am glad i was able to help.
