Condenser fan is out of balance. Can it be repaired? What can be done. Also fan blade alignment and its effect on balance
This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

I guess I edited it out. I used a larger screw in the same place. Sorry about that.

I watched your vid. Black taped a penny to the blade and balanced on the first try so I epoxied it in place. The motor ran great all night.

Just used black paper clip (binder) attached to the plastic blade. You can align it properly before any permanent changes to the fan, and excentric speed is not sufficient to drop it away from the blade. Well I left it without any additional fixation, it seems to solve the issue of vibration.

I make weights by stacking squares of duct tape, and put them on the blades. That way, I can peal it (them) off, and stick it on another blade. It's important, to try on the leading edge as well as the trailing edge, to get a dynamic, as well as a static balance. Very often, I will use two pieces of tape. Once done, remove the tape, put in a screw of similar weight, right in the center of where the tape was. It's very common, that it's necessary to put weights on opposite sides, one high, one low. It's very fast, and, you don't have to riddle the fan with dozens of holes.

Did anyone else get nervous when his hands were close to the spinning blades?

The human eye can detect up into the thousands. You can site the fan. Get parallel with the center axis and slowly spin the fan. Most likely one blade will be tweaked. Twist it SLIGHTLY in the appropriate direction so it corresponds with the other blades. Do it again test it, do it again test it.. I know it can be done because I've done it before.

I always wanted to be able to balance a squirrel cage wheel by trying different blades to put the clip on weight. Never could make it better though. I will try this on my next wiggly condenser fan however. Thanks

Mine is loud as heck now. Replaced my motor with a universal. Used my old blade. Good last year but now, horrible. Might as well get new blades now. At least I know 1/2 22" and whether 3 degrees is an issue, 27 vs 30?

I broke three in ten years. thinking of drilling out the rivets and making a good one from the parts. $170 for a new fan

SO.....fan blades don't get "out of balance". What happens is they get bent. (This assumes no other physical damage). How you can test: -safety your system -use any straight-edge that will fit into your screen (eg, tape measure), and measure down to the top of each fan blade. You do this by picking a single location to measure from, then spin the blade so you can check each one. You want to do this for the top and bottom edge of each blade. At this point, you can attempt to "even up" the blades; basically it's attempting to bend them back to shape. Just don't gorilla the thing, I don't believe they are very sturdy and you don't want to have a blade go flying when you turn the unit back on. Odds are you'll likely need to replace the blade and/or fan motor. Aluminum is prone to fatigue failure, a fancy way of saying it'll catastrophically fail if it gets repeated bending stress in one area.

You need to check blade alignment first , before you try to add weight to it

I agree. First secure to table then measure at high side and low side of each blade gently spinning by hand then adjust as necessary making sure to keep measuring stick at same two locations. Then begin trying weights. I personally would first duct tape a dime, penny, nickel or quarter depending on how out of balance. Make sure to use good duct tape and clean the areas before applying so you don't wind up with a dead-eye. Then clean and sandpaper the coin and a spot on down side of fan blade and epoxy in place once you have found the sweet spot. I would be afraid the screw would create it's own turbulence making it harder to balance. Or just go buy a new blade for crying out loud. I'm bad about spending a dollar of my time to save a dime. Edit....then I watched his next video where he adjusts the blades.... He's the best!

How do you align the blades Mr.grayfurnishman?
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 9 лет назад
Junior Kang Mount a screwdriver on a solid base with the blade above the fan. Rotate the fan and move the screwdriver until the fan blade touches the driver as it is rotated. Bend each blade until they each just touch the driver. Hope this helps. GFM
