ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
In this video we talk about conjunctivitis and how to prevent it. We show how to open a baby rabbits eyes and talk about when to do it. We also share how we gather up a litter of kits when they've spent a little longer in the tote. They're much faster and quick to bolt out of the tote. Here's how we collect them.

I used to have one or two with nestbox eye with every litter till I switched to using shredded newspaper in nestbox from hay or straw. Haven’t had one issue for two years now. I find the shredded newspaper is more absorbent and you can easily spot clean and replace dirty material in first two weeks.

QUESTION: Hi! I have now got my first two litters for this season, and I wonder if you (or any of your viewers) can think a little with me :) Here it is: Litter # 1 Doe Booted (think it's called that in English, fox red for the most part and white on belly) and the buck is a REW (white with red eyes). In the litter I got three solid black, two chestnut agouti and two that look like Charlie (?) Litter # 2 Doe very white check (could be a Charlie ... her mom and dad were 50% German giant check and mom looked like a check and dad was solid black, so I did not think it would be a risk for charlie ....) Used the same buck as in litter # 1 and she only got four kits that all looked like Charlie .... So when it came to this that all the kids in litter # 2 got the same color, I started to think .... I had not thought (did not know, to be completely honest) that the male who is white has a color that is hidden , and that he may then also be broken (?) and was not solid?!? So now I think maybe I should do some trial mating ?? ? I have an NZR (Fox red) doe that I can use ... Now comes the question hahahaha: How many matings do I need to make to figure out what color my REW is wearing? Or rather HOW DO I DO NOW ?? How to do such tests? Or can you already say what genetic material I have? Many thanks to all of you who manage to come up with thoughts and reflections !!!! Big hugs from Sweden (and sorry for any grammatical errors ... I cheated and used google translate hihihi)

Hi Bobby. I'm really curious about your nesting totes and how they are set up. Can you maybe explain again hoe you go from cage to neat box and where/how the run fits in? Also, I'm wondering if the nest boxes stay a little cooler in summer since they are in the ground. And do you use the totes in summer also or just doing the colder weather?

Have you tried supplementing your rabbits feed with home grown vegetation (Siberian pea shrub, dandelions, chickweed, etc)? If so, what were your results? I'm thinking these would provide some beneficial enzymes, nutrients, antioxidants, etc.

My rabbits have sled boxes that have a wire area that allows grass through. They love it and so far have been very healthy. No diseases or major issues have happened aside from the usual ear mites which can be knocked out in a day or two if caught early. I really think the live grass helps their immune system and you just move the box once or twice a day to a fresh patch. Heck they even box trained themselves and only go on the grass.

What do you use as a rabbit safe sanitizer for nest boxes/totes. Do you use one for the actual box or just replace hay?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 года назад
Lysol disinfectant spray Fresh wood shavings and straw on day 28 or 29 If it’s a buck I’ll clean every 6-8weeks they stay surprisingly clean. Once in a while you’ll get a rabbit that wets his tote but it’s rare

You might mention at some point that while entropion can cause conjunctivitis it is quite often genetic. Genetic entropion carriers should be removed from the breeding group. Entropion is extremely painful and will cause blindness.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
Its funny you mention that because I was going to but from what I’ve read the studies are still being done and information gathered to conclusively say if it is in fact genetic. That said, genetic entropion or pasteurellosis isn’t something I would want to chance that’s why I mentioned culling the rabbit if your experiencing chronic conjunctivitis. Thank you for commenting.

Quick question for you, Bobby! My Buck has a matted and somewhat swollen looking eye, which he is keeping shut. My wife is thinking of taking him to the vet and I'm dreading the bill. 😅 I was just wondering if you had any advice on a solution. This is the closest video that I could find of yours that matches my problem. Thanks for all that you do!

I'm not a vet but when we experienced eye infections in the past we've used ophthalmic ointment called terramycin in and and around the eyeball treat twice a day for 5-7 days or until things improve. Best of luck!

Are there any known non-chemical treatments for these infections? I do not keep rabbits but have been trying to educate myself. The anti bacterial you mention is used in the bee keeping world yet the growing opinion tends to suggest that good genetics and good nutrition manages more than 90% of potential problems. What if anything to this effect can you touch on as management practices? Thank you for you content, it has been helpful
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter Месяц назад
Terramycin is an antibiotic medication commonly used in both humans and animals to treat various bacterial infections. Good genetics and good nutrition is paramount. If you’re seeing a lot of disease, then you most likely need to replace your breeders. Rabbits are pretty hardy in general and nest-box eye is caused by a bacteria irritation in the eyeball. Make sure your rabbits eyes are open by day 10. If not, use a warm cloth to help them open so they can start developing correctly. Remove any goop or crust around the eyes.

@@TheRabbitryCenter your awesome! Thats a thorough reply to an individual. My understanding of most medicines and agricultural chemicals is that they may be labeled as 1 thing and do many. With this in mind I wish to limit externalities and simply cull those that can't "overcome and adapt" as it were. I am willing to take a hard loss on the path to greater things, I'm afraid. This has been my practice with chickens, bees and anything else I might consider to be "in it for the long haul". Heard immunity is a very real thing and I want to earn it. Bees may be easier in this regard as a bloodless period accompanied by a good 'new' queen can work miracles. I'm afraid I'm asking from you the secret to a miracle for rabbits. Is there old folk lure that may be worth touching on? I'm very grateful to any advise. I have not yet started my rabbit experience beyond my sister having one when for years when I was a teen/pre-teen. It sadly became my fathers charge as it became a fad for my sister. Thank you for what you are doing. Contwnt development is not the easiest thing, and I believe you already do plenty.
@TheRabbitryCenter

It’s a common misconception that you can always get a Rabbit pregnant and it’s just not the case they do in fact have a cycle, but there’s rabbits that are more susceptible to diseases and you want to cull these rabbits from your breeding program and only breed 100% healthy rabbits that look an act the way you want. There’s many unexpected challenges to raising rabbits, feeding, breeding and keeping them comfortable to maximize your production just to name a few. We also have a podcast the dives deeper into the subjects. Each episode is about a half hour long.
