Here are three possible ways to resolve the issue of USB storage not showing up in Windows or not having drive letter assigned to it automatically. The first solution is quicker but kind of temporal, while the other two require a bit more but are permanent, I covered all three in this tutorial.
SOLUTION 1: Manually Mount the External Disk by Assigning it a Drive Letter
SOLUTION 2: Enable Automatic Mounting of New Volumes
SOLUTION 3: Check for Attributes that Prevent the Disk from Showing up in the Computer Folder or Having Drive Letter Assigned to it Automatically.

Thank you for this video! It helped me fix an external SSD that wasn't being recognized -- going into disk management and creating a volume in it fixed the problem. Going into diskpat and running those commands in step 3 helped me identify the problem. Subbed to the channel 👍🏾

So pleased I found your site. I wasted so much time with the "experts" (including the official Microsoft!) who basically only tell us what as users we already know. You on the other hand, seem to have the real answers to the difficult Windows issues. . Every time I connected the ext disc I had to go to Computer Management - Disc management and re-allocate a drive letter, but this took 10 minutes while it was "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service" I finally solved this using your "enable auto mount" By the way, just out of interest do you know why it takes 10 minutes "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service..." before it populates with the list of drives ? It never used to take more than 60 seconds? Thank you again for the great service you provide here. I have started to use many of your informative videos about the Windows system.

So I own a Mac and a pc, when my external drive was new I plugged it into my ox and it showed up, then I backed up my Mac using that same external drive, ever since that , my pc and same with all pc won’t recognize the external drive or sometimes it does but it shows that the drive is empty, but macs can recognized it properly with out any problems. So is the problem is my mac’s backup ?

Actually IF you made an EXTERNAL HDD and it doesn't show up in the list, but you know its not damaged, and it gets recognized by the windows USB/PORT when you plug it in. Please make sure you give it an hard enough push to connect it properly to the circuit of the enclosure case! Just unscrew it and give it another small push until it "clicks" in place and mount it again! This was my problem and how I fixed it.

EasyTechs The problem that I’m having is after I put in this part I typed in select disk 1. Then I typed in list part and received the message of there are no partitions on this disk to show. I can actually see the hard drive and when I right click on properties, go to hardware, and select Ed my passport 25e2 usb the device status shows as this device is working properly.Once I click the property tab under that and click on the volumes tab it’s blank. Any advice? I can hear my computer recognize the hard drive but one I click on it it states h:\ application not found

just fixed it Open the Disk Management console. ... Right-click the unallocated volume. Choose New Simple Volume from the shortcut menu. ... Click the Next button. Set the size of the new volume by using the Simple Volume Size in MB text box Then format with those options and done!

I am getting three partition, while partition 1 is showing systeml, partition 2 and 3 are showing unknown. major size is in partition 2 and then in list volume, it is showing volume (special character theta)..and other volumes. Volume theta label is shown as OS and with the size of my hard disk. However, how can i type theta and select this volume. please help

Light of my external hard drive is working and I can feel the hard disk working when I touch it. But it is showing up neither in my computer nor in disk management. Okay I found the fix for this: search "create and format hard disk partitions" scroll down to the hard disk that doesn't work, right click it, new volume. Then just follow the wizard until u assign any letter to it (i used G). After doing this my hard disk showed up in This PC (my computer) with the name "New volume", you can just rename it to whatever you want. Hope that helps :D

usually means that ur disk has no partitions. u can make a partition just google it up

Hello, happened the same to me, you can download a freeware MiniTool Partition Wizard and creat a Partition on the disk, and the to as it is explained in this video. It worked for me.

BRILLIANT tutorial! But, when I type diskpart & click enter (as instructed), the hard drive still does not show up in the disk management pane. I KNOW the external hard drive works. careful, when attaching a disk that already has information on it, you might accidentally format it using fix 1 (it often requires formatting)

When I select list part I get 4 different partitions, I've tried selecting all 4 and typing in attributes volume but for Partitions 1,2,3 I get a message stateting "There is No Volume Selected". When I select Partition 4 and type in attributes volume I get a message of "Microsoft DiskPart version 10.0.18362.1 ACTIVE - Mark the selected partition as active. ADD - Add a mirror to a simple volume. ASSIGN - Assign a drive letter or mount point to the selected volume. ATTRIBUTES - Manipulate volume or disk attributes. ATTACH - Attaches a virtual disk file. AUTOMOUNT - Enable and disable automatic mounting of basic volumes. BREAK - Break a mirror set. CLEAN - Clear the configuration information, or all information, off the disk. COMPACT - Attempts to reduce the physical size of the file. CONVERT - Convert between different disk formats. CREATE - Create a volume, partition or virtual disk. DELETE - Delete an object. DETAIL - Provide details about an object. DETACH - Detaches a virtual disk file. EXIT - Exit DiskPart. EXTEND - Extend a volume. EXPAND - Expands the maximum size available on a virtual disk. FILESYSTEMS - Display current and supported file systems on the volume. FORMAT - Format the volume or partition. GPT - Assign attributes to the selected GPT partition. HELP - Display a list of commands. IMPORT - Import a disk group. INACTIVE - Mark the selected partition as inactive. LIST - Display a list of objects. MERGE - Merges a child disk with its parents. Ii got the same thing, but then did this. Press the "window' key + R. When the new box opens, type in diskmgmt.msc and tap OK. The disk management box will open and you will see what your hard drive, possibly Disk 1 as it did for me. From there, to be honest I can't quite remember because mine is now repaired and showing as healthy and is working. But what I do remember is that is was quite straight forward and simple. I either clicked on Disk 1, or possibly right clicked on it and went from there. Nothing else was required and it immediately showed as healthy and was recognized by my PC. Hope this helps!

Hi, Right now I have a problem, accidentally I place a file on my HD and it's completely full. Because it's full I can not access the external HD on my PC but if I use minitool partition wizard, I can see the external drive and it's content but I don't know how to delete a file to have space and repair the external HD. I don't know how to back up that external hard drive because windows is recognizing the drive ad "Local Drive" and I can not access the content. How can I delete a file or how can I back up the drive?

Great video, I have one question though, I am trying to do the third solution as the second one did not work for me, I am on the step where you have to type list part, which I just did, however, it says there are no partitions on this disk. As context, I just bought a brand new 2.5¨ laptop hard drive (which I intend to use on a PS3) that I want to format as FAT32, however its not being recognized when I plug it to the computer via a SATA to USB cable. Any help would be appreciated.

Brilliant! Just what I needed. After cloning Windows 10 to a new SSD (yet to be installed) and leaving Windows 10 on the original SSD, the os couldn't detect an external HDD or flash drives. Using the automount instructions everything is working again.

I had a laptop HDD that I used for a few days with my phone and smart tv using an external HDD connector. After a few days, my HDD encountered a problem and wouldn't show the drive when I tried to connect it to my laptop via USB port using the same external HDD connector. However, I can feel the spindle motor operating inside, but the drive is not shown in the laptop. Is it my HDD or the external HDD connector that's the problem? Will be able to retrieve the data if Harddisk spindle runs ? If I connect the HDD through USB sata I am hearing tik tik sound inside but it's not showing up on the file explorer. Please help me on this.

What do you do when Device Manager shows your disk its native Seagate DicWizard shows them but File Explorer nor Disk Management does not show them? They are not showing up under diskpart as well. I figured maybe to reformat but havent sorted out how to do that as yet.

Apologies in advance if you see my question on multiple videos, but I can't find any video helping with my issue. My external hard drive gets recognised and is supposedly running healthy and with most recent drivers, however, I can't access my content on the hard drive and it doesn't show in my computer. When I open disk manager to try and change drive letter and paths, it tells me I "must initialize disk (my external drive) before disk manager can access it" But obviously I'm worried it will wipe my whole drive. So I don't have the option to do anything without initializing the disk first. Any help will be greatly appreciated
