In 1975 I bought a 1966 VW Karman Ghia. It was bright orange until I compounded it with Ajax cleanser( the powered pumice in it was a great polishing agent). After that it was fire engine red. The original owner had never waxed it and cars weren't clear coated back then.
@LoomyX
@LoomyX 11 лет назад
Probably. But you'll want a better dual action polisher (like Meguiar's G110) and a handful of smaller foam pads (5.5"). And you only need 4 pea sized drops of polish on the pad and no water. Get a strong degreaser too - Scotty has just "filled" the paint with water and oily residues from the polish, and even then it's clearly visible in the "finished" shot. Give it a week and a wash and it'll be just as faded. Do it properly instead :)

My uncle showed my a trick for stuff like this. He bought a truck once with the clear coat coming off on the hood. He used a compound washed it well, then sprayed some "clear wood finish" it didn't look like a brand new paint job. But it looked a lot better. The wood finish provided the shine that was missing due to the clear coat gone.

The problem with faded paint on new cars is caused by clearcoat. There is really no way to protect clearcoat, and when it burns off from exposure to sunlight, nothing but a new paint job (without clearcoat) is the only answer. I have a 1993 Chevy pickup. I bought it new. It is kind of a light tan color. (non metallic) It was sun faded, but not spotted. I was able to polish it back to almost like new condition, just by removing the dried out top layer of paint with polishing compound. I then gave it a good coat of wax. I did this by hand, not with a polisher machine. I don't recommend those because if you are not experienced, it is real easy to polish right through the paint. Most new cars have metallic paint, and it has it's own problems. Unlike non metallic, it tends to fade in spots, and no amount of polishing can bring it back. If you are buying a new car, the best thing you can do to avoid sun caused paint damage is to buy a white car. Even with clearcoat, white paint lasts a lot longer than any other color, and to me it has a nice clean look.
@rushinbot1830
@rushinbot1830 6 лет назад
Gerald Scott, a dual action polisher on a low speed is pretty safe to use. Now one of those high rpm polishers pro detailers use, yeah not for a beginner. They can quickly polish right through the clear coat. For the guy with a question... You can, but the color layer of paint is very thin. Odds are you'll burn through the color coat while sanding it. That's the main reason most won't even try it. If it was just one small area, maybe, but usually all the upper surfaces start flaking off at the same time as those surfaces receive the most sunlight. At that point only a new paint job is going to fix it.
@gfriedman99
@gfriedman99 6 лет назад
No the problem is not the clear coat its the color coat. In fact the reason some color coats fade is because they never were clear coated to begin with. They typically dont clear coat pearl colors because it doesnt look as good as not clear coated.

I've worked at detail shops This is a very temporary fix. Faded area return within a week or so. And you would need to do this pretty much every time you wash the vehicle. Once the clear coat wears off original paint you need a new paint job. This is just putting makeup over it and is temporary.

this isn't faded paint, the clear coat has started to peel revealing the base colour beneath which on a metallic finish will be a matte finish, so this method really doesn't look good, it needs touching up with some clear and some paint-matched colour if the base is blotchy from the elements

This does work. Ive done this professionally (at least for clear coat damage such as scratches) and personally use Meguiars compound. Although, I don’t exactly agree on his techniques. For something that bad you’re gonna want to use a heavier pad and work to lighter pad to avoid any scratches or imperfections from the pad. Also you don’t need that much compound on the car or the pad. For a 5.25” orbital pad, you only need about 5-6 penny size squirts on the pad only. Then spray the pad with a little water. Not saturate it like shown here. Also, something he forgot to mention, buy a random orbital sander. It’ll avoid getting swirl marks on the paint.

I'd rather spend $50 and 3 hours every 4 months than a $1000. I'd plasti-dip it myself with the professional spray kits before I ever paid for a paint job.

yes, you have to be careful, hence I use so much water. The purists whined at me using so much water, but it prevents eating off too much paint all at once.

The clear coat on my truck tail gate is about gone, I've spent part of the day wet sanding it to prepare it for new primer and paint which I'll do later this week.

often a worn transmission cable does that. Try lubricating it first at both ends, the shifter end and the transmission end.
