Do you not need to use peel stop on whole patches as well as edges & what consistency of water/paint for mist coat? I’m using zinser mould resistant paint for primer & top coat so should I mist coat the first coat then use normal for second? Am applying all to plasterboard that is prone to damp.

Great video. Thank you. When do you know when to stop scraping?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 месяца назад
As mentioned in the video until the paint feels firm and requires effort to scrape off. If it just keeps going you may be better off having the whole wall re-plastered. Always try to remove the cause of the flaking before any repair. If it's damp for example, that needs fixing first. Best of luck and thanks for watching.

When I did my loft conversion, I took my gutters off for a while, the heavy rain caused damp in the wall. The house is victorian amd the cavity is probably bridged with old mortar causing the moisture to travel inside. The damp is gone now but it left the plaster slightly blown and caused the pain to peel. Thanks for watching 👍

@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 месяца назад
The repair would be the same, but if it keeps happening then you will need to find the cause and fix that first. It could be moisture from the bathroom, or the plaster was never given a good mist coat of paint, or maybe you need to try a different paint. Unfortunately it's often process of elimination but good ventilation and keeping a room warm is always a good start. Best of luck with it 👍

What is the cause of this bubbling? My friend has a terraced house and the internal dividing wall, there is various spots where the paint has peeled and is bubbled. Mind you, a cheap screwfix matt paint was used which was shit. Would bubbling be a sign of dampness?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 месяца назад
You can never say without looking at it. It can be damp, or condensation, or salts in the brick or plaster affecting the paint. On old houses especially Victorian there is often no damp proof course and the old mortar that was used often has salts which seem to react with modern plasters causing flaking. I've had issues where radiator pipe work is close to the wall. The change in temperature, and more so the cold from the copper in winter when heating is off seems to drawer the salts out causing a light flaking / dust from the paint. It's never always as simple as one problem for all unfortunately! Thanks for watching and best of luck.

Peel Stop makes both a sealer and primer. What's the difference?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 15 дней назад
A primer is more for a good base or bond for the next layer of paint. A sealer creates a barrier to stop for example stains or damp passing through. At least that's what their meant to do!

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE yeah. PVA isn't Alkali resisting... Plaster is an alkaline surface and that's what you get problems using PVA on bare plaster and also issues when painting over PVA.. as it's softens up with the moisture of the paint. PVA, ideal for surfaces before you plaster or fill up. Not for surfaces your putting finish paint on etc. Gardz is good too ... Have you done a video on that yet?

You could make the cracks a touch wider by running the edge of a filling knife down them, then fill with a suitable filler a bit like in the video. Or the other option is to put scrim tape over the cracks amd prep the wall ready for plastering, and give the wall a new skim of plaster. Check out some of my plastering videos for more information.
