I used heavy duty command hooks to put curtains up. My dog jumped on them which ripped them from the wall. Now I have two big areas where the paint came off. I was stressing big time about paying a lot for repairs. I feel a bit better. I’m hoping this works.

Good video thank you..I normally give 'filled & sanded' areas a quick wipe with a damp rag prior to repainting so any dust doesn't affect adhesion.

Great video. My paint bubbled up in a bedroom above a radiator. I scraped it off and it revealed the plaster. I then reapplied the paint and it adhered to the plaster. I have ready mixed pollyfilla in a tub so will use that. But need to get PVA bond. I have 120 grade sandpaper which I know is too course. But I spotted uneven steps on that area and other parts of the room. Walls directly exposed to the outside.

Nice work and great result. This sort of job is ok when the surrounding paintwork is fresh and you know the colour. I don't know how it's possible in a property where the paintwork in the surrounding area is tired (other than paint the whole wall, possibly the whole room). Also, as a Handyman working in rental properties, multiple periods of waiting on a small job like this is a no-go (as there's no way landlords want to pay for multiple visits). Sometimes you have to fill so lightly with a ready mixed filler, that you can get away with no sanding AND very carefully paint over the top of it 15 minutes later with an industry standard magnolia (and hope that it matches well enough!). The result isn't like yours of course but with a bit of practice it can be done to an acceptable level.

To stop possible flashing of the filler when painted... ie when you can still see the difference in colour underneath, you can mix some of the paint in with the powder filler! Tints the filler to more of the topcoat colour, less coats of paint to cover it 😜. Marc

Thanks Steve. Yes making the right quantity is tricky with this stuff, which is why I typically fly in the face of conventional wisdom and add water to the filler rather than the other way round. If you start with water and add filler to that you have very little control of the quantity you're making. I did an update video here if you have an idle moment bit.ly/37aov70

This is super helpful. I put painters tape on my newly painted wall, I'd followed all the right instructions - sanded, cleaned, primed, painted with two coats, used the blue tape - still when I peeled off the tape (ceiling to floor in the room corner), a lot of the paint lifted. There don't seem to be any other decent videos showing you how to fix damage from painters tape, just a whole lot of videos telling you how to pull the tape off sucessfully (which didn't work).
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 4 года назад
Hi Shannon, yes, I've learnt the painful way never to put painters tape on newly painted wall. You just have to cut in the next wall by hand. It doesn't matter how well you mist coat the bare plaster before painting, you'll always take off the paint, particularly if there's a bit of damp in the walls.

@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 6 лет назад
adwaan riviera What I meant was you PVA the wall before plastering. You then apply a mist cost to the new plaster before painting. A mist cost is basically a watered down coat of emulsion paint - anywhere between 30% and 50% paint to water. I wouldn't apply PVA before painting.

For that you want to get yourself a box of Easi-Fill - this is ideal www.toolstation.com/gyproc-easifill-filler-5-x-1kg/p58172 as it comes in small bags so you're not opening the whole thing for a small repair. I show you how to use it in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Omsv5-NN9k.html and you should get some continental filler knives to apply it. Leave it very slightly proud of the surface, lightly sand it back when set, with a 180 grit sand paper and when painted the repair will be invisible 👍

Great tutorial as always Charlie. I would do the same procedure but with a few ammendments: Feather the edges of the paint not score it to help key and blend the edges of the repair better. Add a blob of paint to the filler when mixing it to produce a 'hard stop' filler. This prevents flashing through the top coat.

@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 6 лет назад
Matthew Collins Hi Matthew thanks so much for that comment - it's a great boost to hear positive comments like that so thanks for taking the time to post it! You need a paint that will withstand high condensation - because if you just use a standard emulsion the danger is that the moisture will sink into your wall and if you're really unlucky draw out any dirt etc that was in the plaster leaving you with dark patches (as happened to me once!) I used an acrylic durable eggshell for my new bathroom that I bought from Johnstone's, like this goo.gl/ZhKF4z. I really like the Farrow and Ball colours but I think the quality of their paint is rubbish so I take the Farrow and Ball paint chart into my local Johnstone's Decorators Centre as they mix the Farrow and Ball colour but using their own paint - which I think is much better quality. Google Johnstone's Decorators Centre and see if there are any in your area. They have a massive selection of paints and are usually pretty knowledgeable behind the counter. Failing that see what other decorators centres are around. A lot of manufacturers Dulux etc do paint specifically branded as bathroom paint eg goo.gl/mGqoQK so you could always go down to your local DIY store and see if they can do one (or mix one) in your chosen colour.

Great video once again...it's a good day if you can get an acrylic eggshell to touch in tbh...anything that has sheen tends to show, even some vinyl Matt's and durable Matt emulsions, especially deeper tints. In fact Johnstons paints have even formulated a paint specially to combat this issue called Johnstones Perfect Matt. I find most whites, off whites and some light bases usually touch in ok in contract Matt's and most vinyl Matt's....its always a risk. Toupret is fantastic filler and is very unlikely to flash or shrink 👍👌

However there was one bit (about 2'×2') that I had tried to clean with one of those "magic erasers" and it turns out that the whole wall is dirty. So when I patched the hole I also painted the whole bit. So now it just looks like new paint. I've only done the mist coat, though. Do I need to repaint the whole wall, or is there something else I can do?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
Great work! If you have the same paint the wall was painted in, you may be able to spot paint the patch only without it flashing, but some paints eg eggshell and matts do flash meaning you may have to paint the whole wall.

It looks like it's one coat of paint on plaster, and very smoothly done until the paper was removed. Some paint flaked off with the wallpaper and/or wallpaper scraper so I now know how to prep before repainting, thanks for the video. However, I have no idea what kind of paint was used, and am guessing the stenciling was done with an oil-based paint? How do I discover which paint to use when repainting the entire wall, or would it just be easier to put up lining paper? Thanks Charlie

I would use something like Zinsser Cover Stain (or Zinsser BIN) and then paint over it with a couple of coats of good quality emulsion. Good quality because with cheap stuff the cover stain might show through.

can i skim with the gyproc on a dry wall plasterboard ? i removed some old wallpaper will i need to pva the plasterboard before as it has old paint beneath the paper which cant be removed and the plasterboard has not been plastered before
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 6 лет назад
Yes you can skim on a dry wall plasterboard. It's a good idea to PVA, because as the plasterboard ages, it's suction may increase, so a coat of PVA will seal it nicely in preparation for the Gyproc plaster.

Hi Charlie, great video! Is it essential that you use a PVA bond? Why do you do this?

Not essential in this instance but if filling a dusty hole then it is a good move.

Pva all surfaces before filling, it is so annoying otherwise; the wall/ceiling starts flaking when you think you are finished!

Thanks for this video, exactly what I was looking for. Would I need to repaint the whole wall or just the patch??
@albertpolzinski7548
@albertpolzinski7548 5 лет назад
It seems to make the biggest difference as to when the original paint was applied. If your paint was damaged after about a year, then you will take notice of a patch being painted much more than had the damage been shortly after the paint was applied. In part, the paint on the patch will not match the original color as well, and will catch your attention possibly caused by the paints' exposure to the light and other environmental factors over the duration of time since it was first applied.

Just came across your video! Do you use a basic acrylic eggshell paint for bathroom/kitchen or a specific bathroom paint like dulex + bathroom care?
@CharlieDIYte

In this bathroom it was an acrylic eggshell which has worked really well, but yes, a bespoke bathroom paint will also do a good job.

Hi Charlie. Love the video. Whats the best thing to do if having painted new plaster (mist coat and full white followed by a valspar one coat) and its now flaking in large patches?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 3 года назад
Alastair that's a real pain for you 🙄 I'm surprised it did that after a mist coat. I did a video here on mist coating ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jTjlaAU1NzY.html and you should have been fine so long as the emulsion you used was a contract matt (not vinyl) and permits being watered down - you have to check the tin for this as bizarrely some don't. Is it peeling off in large patches? I'm afraid you're going to have to get a painters knife and remove the loose stuff as best you can and then feather the edges with a fine sand paper before trying to repaint.

Could you use a pre mixed filler? If so do you have an recommendations
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 4 года назад
Hmmm. You could but I can't vouch for the performance. You could perhaps try a light weight filler like Tout Pret REDLITE - it's incredibly light and feels like snow to the touch and is designed for small surface defects. Generally pre mixed don't have the performance of a filler or adhesive you have to mix.

Hi Charlie , I have papered (lining paper) a room and let it dry over the weekend . Wanting the job to be as near perfect as poss I filled one or two tiny gaps in some of the joints with the very lightweight filler available now . After two coats of good quality matt emulsion , you guessed it, the filled areas are showing (flashing?) through . I wondered if any of the stain block primers would do the trick and give me a consistent surface . any suggestions would be really appreciated . By the way Ididnt thin the first coat as I thought that was only when going onto new plaster '.

@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
Hi Richard. So I've checked with a pro decorator on my Discord forum and we could do with a photo or two to see what's happened (email me charliediyte@gmail.com). The filler shouldn't really flash like this unless you haven't rubbed it down sufficiently. He uses Zinsser Guardz of he's worried about flashing but too use this on a newly painted wall you'd need to rub it down again first.

Hey, I need some serious advice. So I ordered homebase silk paint and painted over my old silk painted wall but it started to BUBBLE everywhere! When you pop the bubble the paint peels off like butter. So I sanded it down, applied gardz and then repainted with a matt paint emulsion. This started to bubble also so I started to remove the old paint but it's left some very large patches. How would you go about fixing it?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 года назад
What's happened here I reckon is the plaster was never sealed properly with a mist coat ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jTjlaAU1NzY.html so you really need to peel off the original paint and start again. Gardz is great stuff but it's prevented from doing its job because it's adhering to the paint below which in turn isn't properly keyed into the plaster.

Same principle, just patch the small areas with the Easi-Fill, light sand and then paint. You might have to repaint the whole wall of the paint flashes.

Hi Charlie, another brilliant video, did paint all of that wall or just patch paint around the affected area?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 4 года назад
Thanks mate. I actually just patch painted which worked great with the Johnstone's emulsion and was an invisible patch but talk to any painter and they'll say this can't be done and you need to repaint the whole wall. So I guess it's just luck of the draw depending on which paint you've got.
@paigeodette
@paigeodette 3 года назад
Hi when you did the second coat you just painted around the damage and didn’t have to paint to whole wall right?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 3 года назад
Correct but whether you can do that does depend on the type of emulsion you've got. The flat matts tend to be harder to patch repair as you can often see the patched area. However I have just done something similar in my bedroom that was painted with a Johnstone's flat matt, and you can't really tell, so maybe experiment on a small area first.
