My man! You saved me an expensive service call. I was able to order an OEM carriage on Amazon with next day shipping for $25. Took me 15 minutes to replace the old one and properly lube the screw. Thank you! Probably saved me thousands because I was thinking maybe it's time for completely replace my 25 year old door and opener.
thank you.. I am a 63 year old woman and just completed this in less than 1/2 hour. I was going to call a company to come and fix it.. You saved me a bundle !!
I’ve had a Genie garage door opener for 18 years and lube the ball screw 3 or 4 times a year. I didn’t know this item could fail. Now I’ll keep a closer eye on it. Four years later your video is still educating and helping homeowners. Thanks for taking the time to share this information.
I just paid $252 to have a company come out and fix this because I thought I didn't have time. So not a good feeling watching your video, but sending gratitude for all the others you've helped save a little money! :) Keep up the good work.
God Bless You Man!!! Thought for sure I was going to have to replace the whole Genie and have someone install, and that was going to cost hundreds. My door just slammed shut and thought for sure it was done. I took a chance with the replacement part and your video was right on. Although my hands got a bit greasier than yours during the repair. But it was the best greasy job I ever did. Thank You again.
I have the same sound but only in the way up. Door gets about a foot off the floor and then stops. I'll try this. Was about to spend 299 at costco for a new opener. Thanks!
Wanted to come back and update here for others. It works. Saved me a few hundred plus labor to install a new unit. Thanks! Mine would only happen on the way up. It will stop about a foot off the floor. Closing worked fine.
Thanks so much for this! My garage door was making the exact same noise and would go down but wouldn’t go up. Ordered the part and replaced it today, and it’s working as good as new. Thank you!
Thank you so very much for the tutorial!!!! I have been divorced for a year and trying to do repairs here and there at home by myself. My garage door wouldn’t open and you saved me a few hundred dollars.
I have about a 20 year old Genie Screw drive that has been PERFECT...same problem you are having- a month before our new unit is scheduled to be installed! So, I'll fix this and be all set; thanks for the video.
Hey WW, just wanted to drop you a huge THANK YOU for this video. I am not very handy but thanks to this video, mission accomplished and we have a now-working garage door opener for $15! Thanks!!!
I RU-vidd this when it was a problem for me and was HOLY CRAP these videos are terrible. So we get just as annoyed when you just want info 🤣 Hence this video!
Excellent video - thanks! My Genie screw drive is still opening the door, but having some grinding and needing a little help (manual lifting) when opening - so I suspect it has the same problem.
This is exactly what I needed to find. Great video. My door started grinding this morning. I'll be placing an order this afternoon. Through your links of course 👍
Awesome video. 1 Thing I would do is lower the opener closer to the door. The reason I say this, is because it's mounted up to high, so instead of pushing the door closed, its pushing the top panel down, causing that bend/flexing of the top panel you see as it's closing. This will also cause premature wear on the trolley you just replaced.
I probably need to replace the carriage since the latch will not stay up after I had disconnected it to fix one of the springs. I try to push the lever back up to re-engage, but it will not stay up.
Thank you, and yes it was! We thought it would help expand our reach a little and help relate even better to our audience. We will keep doing them as opportunities present themselves but for our wallet’s sake, we hope there aren’t a ton of them to do!
@@WeekendWoodsmen I don't think I ever told you that for the first year and half that I was watching your channel I assumed that you and Phil were a gay couple who were just putting it all out there and hunted together as an out gay couple. It wasn't until much later that you specifically mentioned in one of your videos that you live separately and had shared a deer carcass between families that I realized that you were not! I think I'm still kind of disappointed that you're not together. That would make you a youtube sensation.
Hahahaha! You are NOT the only person that has thought that. We had a high school teacher that ran into us years after high school and when she saw us she said “Oh, you guys are still together huh?” That’s funny, that comment just made Phil and my day (when he reads this)
@@WeekendWoodsmen OK well at least everyone else is thinking the same thing. That's hilarious. It's cool either way, a shame that you're not, but I know what your video for Valentine's Day 2020 should be......
You should spray the springs with WD-40 and then take your oil can and oil all the hinges and roller rods (not the rollers) and see if that doesn't dramatically reduce the noise.
Hmm, first tim I have heard that. Have you tried engaging the lever on different parts of the track to rule out a bad spot on the actual “screw drive”?
If that doesn’t do the trick I am out of ideas, outside of fixing this issue I have limited experience. I would also make sure the “screw drive” is actually turning. Which could indicate the gears turning the screw are grinding (if it isn’t turning). Springs could also be too tight to let it move? Those are just some ideas based on my limited knowledge. Hope you figure it out!
Check your door springs. If one is broken or they are not correctly tensioned, the door may be too heavy for the motor to lift and the carriage may slip. I had that problem, and had to have the springs re-tensioned just 5 years after a new door was installed using the old opener. The door should be supported by the springs enough so that it can be lifted with reasonable effort while the opener is disengaged.
This worked but when removing the old carriage I went past the white plastic switch and it snapped off. Old plastic.. now when the garage door closes it is not detecting when to stop and closes and then re opens. What is the name of this piece? Anyone have the link for that?
@@WeekendWoodsmen Here is my review on Amazon which details my experience. (do not work for Genie) Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2019 Item Package Quantity: 1Verified Purchase Final Update: 5/2021 Yes, my garage door is heavy. It is a steel hurricane rated door for the stormy life here in Florida. It is not unreasonably balanced, it will stay in most positions of travel. So either these parts are knock-offs or the design is bad (not to mention unsafe) So Genie company either needs to get a handle on the people selling these counterfeit parts or come up with a replacement part that will not fail. Others will be doing the same thing I have just done. I just ordered another opener from another brand. Bye Bye Genie. 2nd update: The replacement for the replacement lasted just a few months before it failed. The same failure mode, the thin plastic guide sheered off. Update: The replacement lasted just a 6 months before the thin plastic blade of the track guide snapped off (a different failure mode) detaching from the track, and allowing my door to slam down. Luckily, no injuries. Since I have an old car blocking access making replacement of the entire unit difficult, I am ordering a couple more replacements to hold me over, and lubing the screw, but I am also beginning the process of looking for a new brand opener, likely one with a chain. This part is not made strong enough and I have lost faith in Genie. Update: It lasted exactly 2 years before requiring replacement. The teeth get worn down and it starts slipping. Ordered another one and replaced it. I plan to order a third one for next time, but once i get it will experiment with adding some chain lube on the screw drive to reduce the abrasion from dust/grime etc. ====================================================================================== Do not call a garage door tech if your door is not working and you can hear the carriage grinding and slipping along the track. The inside of this device has a metal screw track that can wear out over time and start slipping. It is very easy to replace, as the old one will slide off of the end of your track and the new one slides back on. The connections are by cotter pin which are easily removed by hand. The only thing you have to do is unbolt the track from the wall just above the door and swing it aside so you can slide the carriages on and off. It is a 10 minute operation max. You will probably get grease on your hands, so be prepared with paper towels and automotive hand cleaner.
Did a very good job just to let you know on your door arm it looks like there’s a bolt missing and you need to order a new emergency release rope and knob
@@WeekendWoodsmen yeah. I disassembled everything and the motor is turning just fine on its own. I'm not sure though if the female side of the screw ( the one that connects the motor to the gear) is still good. Because the issue seems to be where the chain is
@@lebohanghlapane250 was the slider piece that connects to the main drive screw worn out pretty bad? Part of me is thinking it may still be worth trying the cheap part fix (this video) before investing more money in it. If it works you are good if not then you know it’s not that and only costs you $30 or so to learn
If it is this type of system you can try disengaging the switch and sliding it towards the garage door. I am not any expert, but it’s worth a try to tinker with that
