Great video, slow, deliberate and works. It seems that there’s always some step, that most videos fly by that I can’t ever make work. He covers everything and I had no problems fixing my garage door. Thank you

Calvin - I like it that you have a safety rope hanging down in front of the door window panel. This is a great safety feature if you ever get locked out of your house because you can use a coat hanger to hook on the safety rope from the outside and disable the opener so you can manually open the garage door and get back into your garage/house. Hopefully no one with nefarious intent knows about this little trick.

This shows how strong those Genies are. If this one has been pulling a big wood door with just extension springs for 25 years, that thing is a beast!

Calvin, thanks for posting your video. My Genie IS550 failed yesterday after 22 years of faithful service with exactly the same problem. Your video provided confirmation of the problem; now all I have to do is find the replacement carriage ;-)

Sounds like your track wheels could use some grease or silicone too. Thanks for your video, I watched before I changed the carriage on my genie. It had started popping at the first screw coupling in the up direction so I figured it would fail soon. It lasted more than twenty years but my door is the light weight metal sectional. If you remove the gear from the carriage and reverse it, it will swap the worn gears for the unworn and work like new. No purchase required. But usingg a bathroom scale, measure the weight of the lowered door after freeing the gear. If over 30 lbs, your counter balancing extension or tension springs need adjusting to remove the excess weight son the gear will not keep failing.

Video was very helpful. Looks easier than I expected. New carrier is on the way. I have a 16' wooden door which gives that opener a workout the last 25 years at least. Tough machine!

Omg!! Thank you soooooo much for this video!!! The carriage completely broke of the railing so I thought it would be an easy fix. I look at it and I’m like there has to be a way to easily fix this. So I call a garage door business and the repair guy says they are going to have to replace the entire system!! He started off with $799 and I almost choked and then he said $599 for a lower quality system and then he said well you could go and buy a motor and have us install it for you. So I’m looking on amazon for a damn motor and what pops up?? The carriage! A $17 carriage!! With the option to purchase a $130 service to install. So I’m thinking let me go to RU-vid and see if do this myself and sure enough what I thought and how I thought I could fix it was explained PERFECTLY in this video!! Thank sooooo much!! I’m going to subscribe too!!

Super helpful getting the trolley off the track. Mine wasn’t doing that yet but wanted to do some preventative maintenance so getting the trolley off the track was key. Used silicone lubricant to break up the dusty dirty grease and clean off the gear as well as the space under the gear. Then once that was looking good I used a white lithium grease to reapply the lube. I think you saved me a lot a headache in the future. Thanks!

Hi Calvin, Just like you were I am currently waiting for the replacement carriage to arrive by USPS. Current carriage which is broken was replaced 18 months ago. I paid $20 for the carriage & $91 for the installation to a garage repair company at that time. They said that the door was balanced at that time. When I checked it yesterday, the door was not balanced right. I feel that is the reason my current carriage got stripped. So I will balance the door & replace the carriage today. Your very detailed video will definitely help me in this regard. I will also begin to check the balance of the door every quarter & perform a clean and lubricate regiment at least twice a year from now on which I am hoping will extend the life of the carriage. Thank you.

Many thanks! My garage door opener died while spitting out a chunk of greasy gear type rail. No idea what he heck was wrong. It was one of those days and I just went to google and called up the second repair guy on the list. Fortunately he never called back so I said F-it, maybe I can do it myself. And I did. Cost me $18 for a new carriage. Now back in action. I live in area where it's typical to charge $75 just to come to your house then the labor meter starts running and parts charges are inflated. I know everyone has to make a living.

Couple of things that I discovered and did when I replaced my carriage. My bracket on the wall that the rail attaches to had multiple holes. To save an oops moment I marked the one I would reattach the bolt to. Surprising how they all look alike. Because of the way the guy mounted my motor, when I pulled the bolt out of the hole the rail almost came out of my had, it had so much rearward spring tension. The new carriage is harder to open with the cord and a real bear to close. And, because I had greased anything that pivoted on a rod my door is supper smooth. It will now completely close just by gravity where it use to only close about 1 or 2 panels. As a result I had to readjust the down threshold on my opener because the door would only close about a 2 feet and then stop and reverse.

This was helpful. In particular hearing what the malfunctioning carriage sounds like. One note, it might be advisable to lube the new carriage before installation. That might be why it was so noisy when you first started the new one up. Also it would have been nice to see the difference between the worn out carriage and the new one. Thanks!

If your replacing that carriage assemble often, you need to balance your garage door. It should open with ease by hand and stay in any position. If it is too heavy it overloads the torque that opener needs to lift the door, causing it to strip the ridges. You may need stronger door lift assist springs. google balancing your garage door..

You should show how to hook the carrier onto the rod if its not catching on. You need somone to hit the garage opener or remote to turn the rod so it will catch the carrier.

Darn! Mine gets stuck in the middle of the rise up just when it's heavier. In 21 yrs. I've never changed this carriage and our friend here claims to have it changed 3 o 4 times in 25 yrs. I'll have an eye on this little thing.

Thank you for the video. I followed your video to remove the carriage but ran into a problem. When I removed the rail it was under tension and I can't replace the rail now. The permanent bolt is about 1 inch too short to reach the bracket to put the bolt through. Any suggestions?

I need to replace mine. the whole place broke on mines. also need a new mounting bracket to the door.

Hi Calvin, Thanks for your video. I had a different problem. my Genie Screw Drive garage door opener Popped out once I installed a new one from the holder it is was hanging .i.e. the plastic holding it broke. as the old one also pooped out. there was no problem with a string which were grinding with the screw while rolling. however, the plastic part which you have to connect & hold the end to end popped out this move along with string. any suggestion. do we need to put grease near the plastic part which is rolling. I was under the impression that greasing was only applicable to string and screw which is rolling. not sure if it is an alignment problem as I never changed anything it was working. I noticed it making noise but never really cared unless the door opener popped out of the screw. Any Suggestion on how should I be fixing this problem. should I be greasing the plastic part in the next try or should I look to hire a professional to look for the alignment?

My red rope switch won't re-engage. We had a power outage and I released it without issue unfortunately switching back from manual is not happening. Any suggestions?

The reason why the carriage get busted is because the first screw and the next portion of screw is not perfectly align to carriage maybe the reason is the gap between the connection of screws.

Would you want to add a little dab of lithium grease to the carriage before installing?
