How To Fix LPR (Silent Reflux) - LPR Diet that Stops Reflux
What is LPR, and what causes it? Why acid-reducing drugs are not effective. What diet strategy is needed to stop reflux and symptoms and reverse the damage?
This video discusses a new idea about the underlying cause of reflux involving digestion, fermentable carbohydrates, your gut microbiome, and intestinal gas, and a diet approach based on this idea.

Main cause is stress in any form.. It's linked to brain.. 1.Sleep by 11pm(If have disturbed sleep or dreamy state sleep can take medication in initial stage) 2.Dinner by 8pm 3.Morning yoga /breathing exercise 3.Morning detox drink(boiled Cumin, coriander, Fennel seeds) 4.Morning fruit salad+mixed seeds 5.Go for outing 6.Dont sit continuously 7.Walk for 10-15 mins after every heavy meal.. 8.Discard proton pump inhibitors + prokinetics..

And yeah... Belly breathing is a instant stop for reflux. Anyone can try. Do belly breathing, especially long and deep, holding the breath. This causes the diaphragm to squeeze the LES valve and you feel quick instant relief.

This is a GREAT video introduction and a FANTASTIC approach to dealing with LPR. I went on the Fast Track Diet almost a decade ago and completely reversed a serious struggle with GERD that was wiping out my voice, causing constant throat clearing, and regular reflux. I got so much better I eventually moved away from the diet and 10 years later I started becoming overwhelmed with the symptoms again. I remembered your name and pulled out the books and app again and am throwing myself back into it. I KNOW it works and I'm ready to get healed again!!! Thank you Dr. Robillard.

What an impressive summary of the causes of LPR and treatment options! I have always suspected carbs were the big enemy. I did carnivore diet for 4 weeks and lost all my bloating for the first time in years. Now after a few years of a relatively healthy diet but one that has included carbs, I am suffering with bloating, constipation and debilitating LPR. Time for another huge diet overhaul! As a side note, I have also found that short fasts really help...I guess for the reason that I am simply starving the gas producing bacteria? (I have battled SIBO on off for a few years)

Thank you Dr Robillard for making these videos. I purchased your book a while ago wanting to find answers to my problems, but for no good reason I haven't picked it up and read it as of yet. But after watching some of your recent videos, I am about to dive in and excited to read it now that I have a face and voice the words. I can tell you are sincere from your videos and truly care about what you are doing. I just found your video this morning and I’m reading people’s comments to help understand this condition which I think I have. A few months ago I took a medication, a combination of Aleve and Nexium, to help with the pain of OA in my hip. I truly believe that is has changed my gut micro biome. I recognize that I have the symptoms of silent reflux. I will look into your book and try the APP. I’ve even considered trying the FODMAP diet which is very strict and possibly undoable for me. I have considered that I have SIBO since taking that OA med. Is there a difference between SIBO and H pylori? Also, I’m sure I have a hiatal hernia. Tia.

I just purchased your app. I eat pretty healthy, but i had no idea i was eating some foods with a high FP. Noted. I usually go to extremes so ill probably only eat foods at 4 FP or less. Edit: 2 days in and I can already tell a huge difference. I always thought caffeine was my main trigger, but come to find out it was the high FP foods that I though were actually non-acidic. I've had a cup of coffee both days with no side effects. This diet does take a lot of discipline, but if it's important enough for you to get rid of LPR, you'll do it. I've kept my FP # to less than 20 both days. I'll probably stay at this level, and never over 25. The other benefit of this is I'm sure to get ripped with this low carb approach. Thanks for creating this app and diet!

Hi Dr. Robillard, A few days ago, when I did a search for GERD SIBO diets, I came across your book and ordered a copy, and am really looking forward to reading it. I’ve also downloaded and have been using the app, which I am really enjoying. Needless to say, I am suffering with GERD, which has been slowly getting worse for over a year. Before that, I never noticed it, or at least not as often, maybe a little heartburn once in a while... Today, I have not slept due to the reflux. I’ve tried but haven’t stuck with any diets, such as carnivore, GAPS, keto. I entered my food into the app the other day and had a total score of 24. I thought I made good choices, but my body seemed to disagree bc I wasn’t able to fall back to sleep, & now today, I am exhausted bc I could not sleep at all last night (the 2 Tum’s didn’t help much). I ate a 0% Greek yogurt w/ hemp hearts and a little honey for dinner, thinking that would be easy on my stomach, and that was 4.5 hrs. before bed. I feel like I can’t digest anything and am very frustrated. I tried boiled chicken thighs with salt yesterday but that felt like it wasn’t digesting well, so, I haven’t been eating many calories the last 2 days. Do you have any suggestions in the meantime while I wait for the book? Would you recommend Mylanta or something else to help me sleep? I’ve always been hesitant to take products like that but I am feeling desperate for some relief. Over the last 2 or so years, my nervous system seems to have gone back into freeze, and funnily enough, I also stopped working out over those 2 years. I relocated, lost my connection to place, to my therapist, to my job which was meaningful to me.. I am wondering if your book discusses the vagus nerve at all, or how nervous system dysregulation may contribute reflux? For example, the lack of desire to move your body when your nervous system in shut down, with a lot of stored stress underneath, and how that affects posture, muscle tension, which might in turn lead to weight gain, which in conjunction with the poor posture and tension, might put pressure in the LES and also the vagus nerve? Or somehow cause it stay open? Anyhow.. Thank you kindly, Briana

Hi Briana, Sorry to hear about the impact this has had on your life. I was once in a similar situation being very challenged with reflux issues. Irritation from reflux can be quite persistent and diligence is required. Microbes can produce a lot of gas from very little substrate. You may have helped answer your own question when you said "I’ve tried but haven’t stuck with any diets". When you get your book, be sure and read the trouble-shooting sections and contact us if you need some additional help. Though the book has a chapter on underlying causes, vagus nerve issues are not disucssed. I could be wrong, but I don't see that as one of the "elephants in the room".

I always know when mine is acting up bc I feel exactly like I did when I was pregnant. It's not really a nauseated feeling. It's more like a hot bubble at the bottom of my sternum, I feel hungry constantly, even as soon as 5 minutes after eating, I feel like there's a cat hair in my throat, I regurgitate food without heartburn, and I have a hoarse voice. Coincidentally, I recently got diverticulitis and had to go on Augmentin. During my antibiotic treatment, I also took 1 Florastor I'm the AM and PM and a probiotic blend (different lactobacillus strains) in the evening. I continued the probiotics after I finished the antibiotics. My symptoms seemed to subside and I thought I was in the clear. That is, until I got food poisoning and all my symptoms came back. I got diverticulitis AGAIN and had to repeat the antibiotic, and again my symptoms went away. I will again continue with the probiotics indefinitely and will also add an alkaline throat and sinus rinse to my daily routine.

@osmanvincent1975
@osmanvincent1975 Год назад
I would like to suggest a quick & easy alternative approach that might work for you. Just drink a couple glasses of water and jump up and down for a couple minutes to jiggle the stomach back down to its normal position. No harm or cost in giving this approach a try. You should know quickly, in a couple days, if this approach helps. Forty years ago, I did an activity which forced part of my stomach up through or past the diaphragm. It was a couple months later that I suddenly started having severe stomach pains. I was initially misdiagnosed by a doctor as having ulcers. It was a couple of years of misery before I realized that the doctor was wrong and I had gastric reflux disease, or GERD. GERD often happens naturally without a clear cause, especially with older people. Normally, the esophagus sphincter and the diaphragm sphincter muscles line up and reinforce each other. If part of the stomach is pushed or pulled up through the diaphragm, the two sphincter muscles don’t line up and stomach acid can more easily leak into the esophagus, causing GERD. Other people suggest drinking warm or hot water to relax the muscles, I would suggest cold water so that the heavy water will stay in the stomach longer. I would also suggest doing it first thing in the morning so the volume of water won’t dilute the digestion process of other food. It may take a repeat on a few successive days for the esophagus to adapt to the new longer length for the stomachs to stay in its new proper position. I would repeat the process anytime I got heartburn or acid taste in my mouth. I have been trouble free for over 35 years now, and can eat anything I want and take no meds for anything. I later learned of a gastroenterologist in Michigan who recommends this process also; maybe others now also. The body needs strong hydrochloric acid in the stomach to trigger the esophageal sphincter to close, to break down bulk foods generally, and to separate protein into the amino acid components to be effectively absorbed from the small intestines for use to make new proteins our body needs. Most or all GERD medicines block the production of or neutralize the hydrochloric acid which then interferes with protein digestion and interferes with esophageal sphincter closing. Both of those actions are counterproductive.

Hi Norm, thanks for the video. I have a very weird variation of lpr where whenever I drink water only do i show the sings of GERD, with the acid reflux reaching my throat causing irritation all in that area. Looking to get some tests to understand why and what this is? Did you ever consider surgical options and if not what were the reasons for this? For me I am not keen to be taking medicine for the rest of my life.

One possibility is the water diluting out the digesting food (chyme) enough for intestinal gases (produced in response to a prior meal) to get through into the stomach and then driving refllux. When you have reflux think about your last couple of meals. Did they include appreciable fermentable carbs?

Hello! For me, I coughed and wheezed over a 4 - 6 hour period at a time. Sorry to go long, however, it's never ONE thing, is it? Two things confirmed for me were Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and low-potency stomach acid. SIBO would produce gases that would build up from my intestines and carry pepsin from my stomach to my breathing pathways because my stomach acid wasn't strong enough to trigger my Lower Esophageal Sphincter to close. The result is asthma like wheezing and coughing. I acidified my stomach with Zypan, while undergoing an elimination diet. It turns out that I was eating foods that neutralized my stomach acid!! Bread, grains, high fructose corn syrup to name a few. In fact, acidic preservatives in bottled tea and seltzer drinks like Bubli would activate pepsin wherever is was located in my soft tissues (sinuses and esophagus). All of these foods caused indigestion for me. When I eliminated these foods with low carb, sugar/sweetener-free and whole food diet, something changed. Although I still have to induce burping to relieve build up periodically (especially before bed), for having eaten only one meal per day, I don't cough nearly as much anymore!! Runny nose is a symptom for me still because it will likely take time to recover from SIBO. Otherwise, I feel no burning or other acid reflux symptoms. Just the cough, asthma and bloating.

SIBO makes sense. I suffer from severe breathing issues all day and it becomes worse at night. I feel a lump in my throat, which feels like there’s food stuck in my esophagus. I often will regurgitate a little food when burping. This constant lump causes low oxygen and wheezing all night long. Taking antibiotics used to give me a little bit of relief to where I could eat almost anything. Now it does nothing. Going on the carnivore diet seemed to make things worse. It made my bloating much worse which in turn worsened my breathing. Going carnivore also caused severe diarrhea, along with very painful rectum spasms and colon inflammation. One of the hallmark symptoms that I have is painful burping. When my oxygen gets low, and my wheezing is bad, if I can release a painful burp, I will sometimes I get relief with my wheezing. My oxygen will go back up temporarily. Please help.

The lump feeling is inflamed throat tissue. You want to deactivate the pepsin that are in your throat tissues which are harming your throat and vocal chords. Buy some alkaline water (9 plus). Fill half a glass with the water. You can either use 2 teaspoons of baking soda or crush into powder 2 TUMS put into the water and stir well. Then gargle until the glass is empty. Do this 3 times per day. This will help deactivate the pepsin. Continue this each day until you start to feel better. Baking soda has a ph of 9. TUMS has a ph of 11. Avoid eating any acidic or low ph foods as they activate the pepsin.

Hello Dr. Norm! I have gotten migraines in the past when eating Erythritol-even in small amounts. I do, however, do very well with Allulose. @DrNormGutHealth
@DrNormGutHealth Год назад
Great question. Allulose is considered a low glycemic sugar which is great for metabolic health. However it is fermentable by gut bacteria. Exactly how fermentable is hard to determine without a measured glycemic index value from which Fermentation Potential can be calculated. I use it myself in my egg-white bread recipe. In studies, some GI side effects were observed when 50 grams were consumed. Keeping the amount consumed to half of this (25 grams or 6 teaspoons) per day makes sense at least until you know how well you tolerate it.

Hi, This study in healthy people found that 0.4 g/kg (about one ounce for a 150 lb person) caused symptoms. You can assume less might cause problems in people with poor digestion / functional GI issues. Small amounts might be OK (you can experiment as I have). On the positive side, allulose has few or no calories, won't cause a blood sugar spike, has desirable properties for making ice cream, and tastes pretty good as well. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6315886/

Interesting theory. Unfortunately, for me, I've tried low/no carb diets, but my reflux becomes 100 times worse, especially with higher fat-comprised meats like beef. High protein seems to be an issue too. That said, I'm quite sure I have lower gut issues besides GERD, but it's not SIBO. What clearly does help, though, is eating low fibre vegetables that are cooked well enough that they are digested easier. Fermentable carbs are, indeed, a nightmare for my gut. I just need to figure out why I'm not digesting fats, as is evident due to the steatorrhea.
@DrNormGutHealth
@DrNormGutHealth Год назад
Interesting. Good, you realized too much fiber could be an issue. Regarding proteins and fats, several amino acids are fermentable and SRB can utilize fats via a unique coupling of two different metabolic pathways. In addition to follow-up on fat malabsorption, you might look at SRB strains via a comp stool test.

You could start the diet and after a week or two try stopping the omeprazole which is a proton pump inhibitor, the most powerful acid blocker. Getting off the PPIs at some point is part of the solution. Using an antacid as a "rescue med" is an option. Antacids are much less invasive compared to a PPI.

Sugar substitute erythritol, common in keto foods, may increase your risk for stroke
@DrNormGutHealth
@DrNormGutHealth Год назад
Yes, a recent observational study of 2,149 participants from the United States and from 833 found that those with the highest 25 percentile erythritol blood levels were 2.5 and 4.5 times more likely to have a cardiovascular event respectively. Keep in mind this study is observational and can't determine causation and some reporting indicates that the European cohort was older and sicker. And since the study focused on people already at risk for heart attack and stroke, it raises the question about what affect we might expect in healthy people. For now, I am recommending some caution with consuming more than small amounts and to consider alternatives (stevia, monk fruit without erythritol, etc.) until we know more. Here is a balanced review of the study by Dr Ken Berry (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U0p-EOHv6gY.html).

I think it's a solid practice for many, but not all people. It's not for people in a significant weight loss situation or with various other health issues. Also, refeeding can be tricky for some leading to diarrhea. Gradual re-introduction (broths, etc.) can help and don't overdo it on the carbs.

I had an endoscopy and have a minor hiatal hernia (hill grade 1) and a bit of inflammation, but I've had the throat-clearing for years and years. Thoughts? I'm a long-time low-carber, having started in the late 1990s. Started a carnivore approach last August.

Kathy, I’m REALLY hoping you get an answer from Dr Norm because this sounds almost exactly like my experience. Fast Tract DOES really help my symptoms but I have to do it for several months to feel it. I suppose after many years of low carb, my symptoms were kind of “at bay” so I didn’t realize I had a problem…then when I’d cheat and eat carbs, I really noticed it. Currently on low carb but still have the throat clearing, weak vocal cords, dysphasia when I eat, and lump in throat constantly. I haven’t had an endoscopy yet. Was it beneficial for you???

@@amyp2668, the endoscopy was merely diagnostic. Scope down my throat and through the sphincter valve into my stomach. No ulcers, very minor hiatal hernia, only slight inflammation, but almost constant throat clearing. I've removed all fermentable foods from my diet and still no relief from the cough. I've been LC/keto for so long there really was very little I needed to change, especially since starting the carnivore approach last August that removed ALL plant foods from my diet. The gastro doc had me do PPIs for just one month and then stopped that, but she put me on Nortriptyline (a mild anti-depressant) to deal with the coughing. She says I'm just very sensitive and the least bit of acid can set things off. She says they use this med with great success with others in my situation.

I’m in the same boat. You could take a look at ENT specialist Dr. Zalvan. He treats his LPR patients by using diet to lower refluxed pepsin: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qaIysT3CEVs.html

@@amyp2668 Hello Amy I'm all over internet and youtube searching for answers and remedies to relieve the lump in my throat feeling as you mentioned in your reply to Kathy. Sorry to bother you, but have you found any solutions and or remedies? Only thing that has, I feel taking tylenol helps so I can forget the bothersome feeling. Thanks in advance take care :)

Hi Kathy and others commenting on this thread. So sorry to hear about your persisting symptoms. I've been there and is sucks. I recommend if you haven't, reading the underlying cause chapter and the troubleshooting sections of the FTD book and app, the FTD FB group for interactive support and the Q&A page on digestivehealthinstitute.org for starters. You can always contact us. Having a detailed diet/symptoms log helps and potentially more comprehensive stool testing. These gut microbes are tricky survivors and can learn to use almost anything for fuel including hidden carbs from your diet as well as proteins and even fats in some cases as well as mucins your own body is making.

Not sure I am convinced. I have LPR and lifelong Noburp (Retrograde cricopharyngeal disfunction) at the same time. My UES simply doesn’t open up no matter how much gastric air pressure I have.

A lot of people feel worse on ACV, I wouldn't rely on it. I'd try DGL instead, ACV isn't good long term for bones and some other things.

Hello Dr. My symptoms seem to be only on one side. I can sometimes taste a bitter hot fluid coming up in the right side of my throat, I have thick mucus, one swollen tonsil and a plugged nose all on that side. Does that sound like LPR? I cannot get into the specialist until December this year and I have been suffering for almost two years. Any thoughts would be appreciated. 🙂
@DrNormGutHealth
@DrNormGutHealth 2 года назад
That sounds uncomfortable for sure. One sided symptoms sounds strange, but I worked with someone that reported the same thing. While there can always be other possible causes, feeling bitter fluid coming up is consistent with reflux.

Yes mine is all on my left, stomach, oesophagus, throat, ear and left nostril, constantly congested and I can’t pin point any one food that’s causing it, the left sided breathlessness is the worst, had all heart/lung investigations and all good so it’s a mystery

@BeBeingBenMesa ppi’s don’t help me at all plus they cause another load of issues so I’m now looking into the vagus nerve after my physio telling me that it can cause all sorts of problems in the body plus my ribs on the left are also stiff so I’m wondering if I have a dysfunctional rib cage causing my breathing etc to be compromised, it’s a constant investigation when Drs are useless and say everything is anxiety
