I’ve got to admit, I have used it in the past and have had zero issues, HOWEVER, I now only use Zinsser primers where I need to ie the issue in this video. I’d never have used it in a bathroom with peeling paint for example, but I have used it on patches of bare plaster when I’ve sanded. Live and learn and hope you don’t make too many mistakes haha

Had this issue in the previous house, I lost count of how many times I scraped and repainted the same patches with bathroom paint... wish I'd seen a video like this beforehand!

Love Toupret... been using their internal and external filler for years... external doesnt sand as easy, but in a solid wall house like mine, it comes in handy internally. Love how you can mix up thick or thin depending on application. The internal though is so easy to sand its actually ridiculous... probably too easy.. falls away very quickly. I use 220 and above on the internal stuff.

I do it exactly the same as you phil and use the same products apart from i use the zinsser perma white satin finish, as you can also use this on the woodwork in the bathroom giving it that extra anti mould durable protection 👍

Love permawhite, can easily 3 coat in a day. Which is the only issue I’ve had with it, it seldom covers well enough in 2 coats, find it looks very grinny. Has the same issue with the allcoat white satin, the top of the skirt often looks weak after 2 coats

Thats good stuff too. I used it on one of my rentals the other week in the kitchen, two nice coats of the mat finish. it's no hardship to spot prime over any bare bits first.

Hi, Thanks for the video, that was really helpful. My bathroom ceiling is in quite a mess, I don't just have little bits here and there to fill, one area that needs filling is probably going to cover an area of about 1 meter square! 😱So my question is, with it being a quite a big area to cover, should I fill it in the same way or is there a better way to deal with bigger areas? Hubby thinks DIY means don't involve yourself! so I need all the help I can get before I attempt this on my own! 😬
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 9 месяцев назад
Bigger areas than this. Scrape back and remove the loose get to a tight edge.l, like I did. Then peel stop all the edges and you can treat the bare also with peel stop. Then with your filler, skim and float over the edges and blend it into the bare surface. You can skim over all of it if it's possible and not too big. If you skim the paint edges and Allo to dry you can sand them and blend them back into the ceiling. Make the judgement what will look best. Once it's sanded nicely, you can use the Glixtone, as per it's instructions... I have a video of using it too if you do a search... If you have down lighters you'll find you're not looking at the ceiling once you sort it out.

4:15 No it isn't. Gardz and Bullseye 123 in the Zinsser range are alkali resisting, but Peelstop isn't. Begs the question - if you felt you needed to seal the surface with an alkali resisting primer, presumably you think that anything that doesn't do this (like PVA and Peelstop) will fail? @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 7 месяцев назад
As I said before you re edited your post. PeelStop can go over bare plaster though (which is an alkali surface), or is that what you are disagreeing on? PVA can't be used on a alkali surface as it's not alkali resiting, it also doesn;t allow the surface to breath like peelstop, hence why you don't use it, it also created problems later when painting over. The Peelstop in this instance isn't being used as an ARP, its being used to seal the edges of where the flaky paint is as it's a really good product for that purpose,which can be used on bare plaster with no issues. Yes, you can use other things to seal the edges prior to painting (you could use emulsion, which is also alkali resisting) but peelstop does what it says on the can and blinds the edges down a lot better than just using emulsion paint. Coverstain can be used on dry bare plaster (i wouldn't used that unless needed as other zinsser products may be more suited) it's an oil based product but more like a hybrid mix of stuff, as traditional oil paint also isn't alakli resiting and thats why you don't put oil based paints on bare plaster as saponification will ocure. What do you do when paint flakes and needs fixing?
@okafka5446
@okafka5446 7 месяцев назад
Peelstop " This is alkali resisting" - No, it's not. Thanks for your long reply, but if you read the tech pdfs for the Zinsser products Gardz, Bullseye 123 and Peelstop. You'll see both Gardz and 123 are for areas of high ph (alkali) and no mention of this in the Peelstop pdf. You can verify this with Zinsser themselves, who recommend Gardz or 123 in situations where your concerned about alkalinity of the surface. Maybe we're talking at cross purposes here. Simply put, and in answer to your question "What do you do..." - I try and work out what the cause of the issue is first, then provide a solution, and of course this will vary depending on what the cause is. My gut tells me Peelstop is shortcut to thorough prep, and by using it (particularly with respect to exterior issues) you're simply shoring up problems for the next painters coming along, instead of addressing the root causes of the issue. But hey, to each their own - you do you.@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator

I painted a room yesterday and the paint bubbled in a few places, I’m not sure why I googled reasons why paint bubbles, and 1 of the reason came up as could be grease or dirt. My question could peel stop be rolled on an entire wall that has been previously painted to stop any bubbling? Just to add I used brand new Tikkurila Optiva 5 white paint delivered directly by Tikkurila.
@grahamstacey3149
@grahamstacey3149 9 месяцев назад
Had a similar problem painting matt over previously poorly applied silk. The new paint softens and reactivates the old stuff underneath and it delaminates from the surface. I used peel stop over the silk on the other walls before painting and it’s was fine. Your blistered wall will need correcting as in Phil’s vid, then use peel stop before repainting.
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 9 месяцев назад
What were you going over. If you went over a contract paint or even a mat, Optiva 5 will search that out, the moisture of o5 will reactive the painter under it, that then tries to dry and breathe through the better quality paint film of Optiva 5. You can get this with F& B going over previously cheap false opacity paints like Eclipse

I don't know about you Phil but i bloody hate those towel rads. The peel stop doesn't hold edges down as well as the solvent based one but its a good compromise from not getting the bloody white spirit and rags out etc and drying time. The only filler you need phil is easi fill miles better than toupret get easi fill 20 and 60 on your van your sorted don't need to spot prime unless your going for 1 coat over the same colour. toupret is really over rated and more expensive. if you used easi fill 20 you'd be able to sand paint over that in 15-20 min even though it says 20 its more like 5. Also I don't reckon you would even need to stabilise the surface with easi fill as you can you use that as a coving adhesive
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator

Toupret drying times are a bit stupis tbh. Peelstop does 'glue' down these edges.. and it makes a good video everyone love peeling paint vids.
