I think it’s named tortoise shell because it mimics the pattern of a specific endangered sea turtle called the hawksbill. It’s shell grows in overlapping plates and has that distinctive translucent yellow and brown color. Had to look it up so I could answer correctly.😂 love this set. Not sure about the purple, but it’s kinda growing on me…🥰

It's called this way as it looks like tortoise shell once it's polished, cut and shaped to create jewellery. Same with glasses, the colour is called hawskbill tortoise shell as it mimicks the natural material made of actual tortoises. Poor creatures 😔🐢

In some places this material is illegal, as tortoises are protected, so many brands make plastic designs that looks similar to this or out of resin or other materials. So a lot of the things out of the true material nowadays should be fake, but of course there are still people who wants the real thing and there is a black market for that unfortunately. In Mexico it’s totally illegal to sell or buy this material.

This set turned out beautiful!!! I've been wanting to do a tortoise shell set too but like you said I currently don't have a transparent brown color. I really love the traditional tortoise shell look but the purple also adds a pop to the nails 💅🏿💜 both very gorgeous 😍

"In the old days" things like your glasses frames, combs, purse handles, etc. were actual tortoise shell, and looked like that. We make it out of plastic now, to the benefit of tortoises.

The reason it's called tortoiseshell is because real tortoiseshell was used to make glasses, combs, guitar picks, hair accessories and other items from the 1920s until the 1970s (the practice became prohibited to protect tortoises and their shells. The Hawksbill Tortoise was particularly desired for its smooth shell and desirable patterns, which is commonly replicated today. The only way to get a non-acetate/plastic tortoiseshell item is to look for vintage pre-1970 items.

It's so beautiful! But from both I think the first one is the most beautiful one, more classic! But I like it with an other color too. I have a question, if my nail technician put the first base coat it burns when I put my hands in the led lamp. After that not with the colors but the top coat burns again. Is that harmful for my nails? And what can we do about that? It's not on my skin! She is very good and looks always that nothing is on my skin or under my nails. Beautiful set! Tortoise aren't just green ;) They are in all ground colors. If it going about tortoise shell pattern it came from critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle. And it is critically endengered becouse people used to make jewellery and many other stuff out of its shell. Now we are using mostly acetate to imitate this pattern. Yes, I am design freak XD And I also design glasses ;)

I must be honest the traditional style is better. Now if you had used perhaps black or normal dark brown instead of the purple with maybe a gold glitter stripe at the join, then that would have looked great!! But you are so talented, who am I to be suggesting anything?? Much Respect 🌹♥️‼️

Back in the old day, they actually used cut-up and polished tortoise shells as a decorative material for things like combs, jewelry, etc. And yes, it used to look like this! After almost killing off all of the tortoises (and with the invention of plastics), they stopped using real tortoise shells and made imitation "tortoise shell" colorations for these products. If you Google "antique tortoise shell jewelry" and look at the images, you will see what I mean!

Turtles have green shells mostly but tortoises have brown shells. Turtles and tortoises are two different animals.

if a nail is soft and weak wouldn’t it be better to use a hard gel as a protective layer ?

That was my question. Soft gel breaks easily for me and I have damaged nails from chemo

But I think it’s because the hard gel would mayhe crack with the soft nails underneath? I know this happened to me using dip powder. A rubber base coat moves with the nail, and soft gel is still strengthening but more flexible.

Not all tortoises have green and back in the day (it’s not as common now) accessories like combs and hair stick things and other things were made from actual tortoise shell. It’s not as popular now for the same reason real ivory or real fur are no longer massively popular
