This is how to fix a screen door lock which will not lock. This is a very common problem with a very easy repair. This particular lock is made by whitco however all door locks with a similar design will operate very much the same. The door will latch but can not be locked. Thank you. My first time ever checking out RU-vid for a solution to a problem and SUCCESS!!! I had to adapt a screwdriver into a chisel and used a skewer to measure the depth but now I have a secure screen door. Now I am a miracle worker in my hubby’s eyes 😂

Thanks so much. Fixed it myself after your video info. My solution was not the depth of the recess but the middle metal plate on the door frame was too flat in and didn't fully push the little latch in enough. I eventually pushed the plate out a little and it works all the time.

Thanks Bill, you saved me from buying a new lock. Had similar problem as you demonstrated the latch wouldn't engage because the strike plate was slightly too high for the latch to enter. Works great now!!👍

Thanks for the great diagnosis. I could apply to my problem door. My door’s little latch was not pressed in enough to trigger the latch to come out fully. Fixed with a couple of layers of double sided tape. The problem was the door was too far to the frame. I could have moved the strike plate closer. More work.

Same problem here. I've fixed for now with tape, but long term am thinking I need something more permanent, like moving the striker plate closer, surely there has to be an easier option though? Instructions on new packet I bought to try to fix the problem (that of course didn't work) speaks of "striker spacers" they sell, but I can't find them at bunnings or anywhere, the only spacer things they have look like they require lots of work with cutting to size & stuff, so really not saving any work to buy. I would have thought there should be a "spacer" that can be bought that would fit directly on or under the striker plate to move it out. This must be a common problem as doors move over time, so why no easy fix?

Wish I'd watched this before buying & trying to install a new lock, only to have the problem remain. There's actually a second related problem that's possible though, that was the issue in my case, that top nib has to be pressed against the metal plate & if the door has moved over time, there can be too much of a gap there & the top nib not pressing in enough, so needs the opposite to the solution here, with packing between the top nib & door frame. Your video at least got me looking at the right part to find the issue though, so thanks :)

awesome vid, thx man. we have a weird prob with our flyscreen. we can lock it with the key, but the kids can just turn the latch and get out?!?? the lock doesn't remain locked. same as not using the key. baffled.

with my one, it only locks using the key. but if I simply lock it using the lever , it unlocked when you open the door

Thanks Bill. Have the same screen door. My little silver locking latch has fallen out... I understand there's a small clip inside to hold it in place. Are these locks easy to open up and reposition the clip and latch? Cheers

Hi, depending on the brand the latch will be held In Differently. Very easy to open up and put back together and I have a few videos that show how to do this 👍

I have a screen door where the handle doesn't return back to the upper position. Do you think it can be fixed without changing the lock? I kinda don't want to get new keys cut if i can help it.

Hi, usually this would be due to the spring failing. You can replace the lock body and cover whilst still using the old cylinder 👍

What if everything is ok except at 1:20 the little latch is spinning around freely causing me unable to lock the door from the inside :( I don't mind taking it apart and tinkering rather than replace the whole thing what would you advice?

thanks .. saved me doing something else to fix........ ie waste my time... phew I owe you 20 minutes. take it off the end of my life. Those 20 min will suck anyway
