WHAT IS UPPER BACK PAIN?
The area below your neck and between your shoulder blades is known as your “thoracic spine” or “upper back”. Pain in this area is most-often due to alignment/movement of the thoracic vertebrae or dysfunction in the muscles (tightness or weakness) of the upper back.
WHY DO I GET UPPER BACK PAIN?
The pain in your upper back can come from your spine (vertebrae), ribs, joints (spaces between your vertebrae), and muscles. The most-common cause that I personally treat for pain in this area is poor posture and the strain it places on your muscles and spine.
HOW TO FIX UPPER BACK PAIN
The right stretches and exercises can help to relieve and eliminate upper back pain… and that’s exactly what I’m sharing in this video!
First of all, your thoracic spine should be very mobile. In fact it’s one of the most-mobile sections in your spine. It should move forward and back, side to side, and rotate freely. One of the best ways to decrease pain in your upper back is to improve your motion in each of these directions.
Second, your upper back should also be very strong and stable to act as support for your neck and a foundation for movement in your arms. I’ll show you some great exercises to work on your postural muscles and the muscles between your shoulder blades to improve strength and function and decrease your pain.

Thanks for your willingness to share your expertise on physical wellness. After two back surgeries (Laminectomy 2003 and Spinal Fusion 2013,) I was recently diagnosed with herniated disk at L3-L4. I have chronic back pain but try to stay active and exercise with modifications as needed. I’ll be returning to physical therapy next week, but this will give me a program I can do daily at home. I have major problems with my upper back and neck and suffer with headaches most nights when on my side. Have had issues for years. Have used contour pillow but still having problems. Will work with your exercises and stretches to see if I can get some relief. I follow you regularly with your exercises and workouts..Thanks heaps Jared. Thank you, I needed a routine that I can try to do in working hours despite looking a bit awkward for doing exercise in the office, but my chronic pain got me tired of suffering, I will use this to try to help me soothe the pain :)

Currently have soreness in upper back thoracic likley.. Following these exercises give me that stretch I need whilst feeling slight pain due to tenderness I know it is strengthing throughout that area though.. Once I have done enough that ache subsides slightly and I feel relieved.. Will try to incorporate it more often into routine as I do forget once the pain and ache subside. Thank you for the video tutorial and getting right to the point.

Hi I’m a back pain sufferer and your new subscriber. i’ve tried these exercises and I feel better. I’ll definitely do these exercises everyday. Just purchase a foam roller but the only available size in the shop here in my area in Sydney is 45.6 cm x 15.2cm diameter is that fine? I tried its fine for me but just want to consult you if the size is safe for me to use I can return the item if not suitable.

I love cat cow and the back exercise you used a chair with, I use my bed footboard. At age 46, stretching is a must morning and night. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have upper back tightness/stiffness so the combinations between stretches and exercises are just what I needed and was looking for. Thank you Jared. I will add these to my daily routine. Jared, can you help with any stretches/exercises relating to Meralgia Paresthesia, right outer thigh tingling/sensations especially during the night for me. You might have already made a video or not on this. I would appreciate any help/advise. I don't feel it below the knee.Thanks Jared. God bless🙏👍

Is it a lower back/disc problem? Tight hips? Other issue? I've got a few videos that might help depending on where your pain is coming from exactly. Thanks!

I still had pain at the end of this mobility session, but on the plus side my T-spine is feeling more mobile than before the video. I can actually put it through the full range of motion again even though it hurts. Guess I’ll just keep repeating the video until the pain goes away.

I hurt in my right rhomboid and it hurts when I lay on my left side and it hurts when I pick up from my left side aswell even to my right side hurts

A more strictly follow along video would be nicer. Just something that gives a preview before each exercise and a timer for each. Something I can put on every morning without hearing extra commentary every time. Mady Morrison has great videos like this.
