I've had mine for over 5yrs and have never had a problem until yesterday. My air compressor won't turn on at all. When I flip the button to "on" nothing happens. I've plugged it in and waited several hours for it to get a good charge (even though I don't think the charge was the issue), but still nothing. I'm going to try some of your advice and see if I can troubleshoot the issue. Thanks!
I'm having an issue where it won't jump. The battery is good, I pulled it out and it passed my battery tester and charged it externally as well. The flashlight works, compressor works and will charge my phone as well. But it won't jump start. Any suggestion?
I've got the 1200 kit for Christmas one year, and it's served me well these last 3-4 years. The AC Motor on my blew (I shouldn't be smelling it), but it looks like an easy fix, now to figure out how to fix it, lol
Great tear down. I got maybe 4 good uses off mine and it crapped out right after the warranty expired. The piston in the compressor melted and was in pieces. I expected better from Stanley.
I purchased mine in 2017 from Sam's Club. I took it out of my truck and put it on the charger for 28 hours. It did not charge up so I called the Stanley company. Boy was that a mistake. Stanley has been bought and sold so many times it was dealing like a rented mule. I finally got a number and was put on hold for 45 minutes. I gave up doing this and took it back to the Sam's Club I purchased it from with my original receipt. At first they wanted to know if I had purchased the 3 year warranty. I told them I didn't think I needed it. Customer service at Sam's club called the supervisor lady. She looked at my receipt and said she would give me store credit on a new one. I thanked her and picked up a new one. It is charged up and I used it to put air in my pickup. The unit is back in my tool box awaiting the next time I need it.
When he says, " when this spins really rapidly there's another fan inside of here you could actually stick your finger on this other end right here on the inside what it does it turns and it's pumping air into here and that's how you get the air" I'm like 😳...🤭...😂!!!! So glad my guy saved it with the facts! Piston is what pushes the air, the "fan" turning is an armature connected to the gear driven by the post on the motor. Nice save!
Okay, so mine won't charge! Bought it when I worked at the Fair around 2015 as part of my job and it worked great, but NOW it doesn't want to hold a charge....now I might have an answer. Thanks for sharing this, great info. I don't wanna just "get rid of this", it's actually been a great tool!
Thanks for the video, found out the pin that connects to the piston fell out... but mine has a rubber ring on the piston...thicker than an o-ring..maybey they have fixed the problem with what yours had???
Got one as I was assigned to work in rural areas and had long, secluded drive times. Didn't want to be stranded ya know? It got me through one summer of topping off tires and a jump start, and then the compressor died. And then it won't hold a charge. I got Stanley because of the name and availability, well, it's not the same Stanley reliability I remember as a kid.
I have one of these. Have had it since about 2002. It has worked great. I haven't used it in maybe 2 years. Just cleaned the garage decided to charge it up, and have found it is no longer charging. But, I can say it worked for about 15 years just fine. I might try ordering a new battery.
I believe that I have the 1st gen version of this. Labeled "Stanley 500 Amp" on top and "1000 peak battery amp" below. We own 2 of these, one for each car. I've had mine for over 10yrs and the battery is no longer holding a full charge, and certainly not holding it for quite as long. I only charge it twice a year, Oct and around Feb/Mar., as I kept it in the car year round. I've probably saved more people with this, than I've actually had to use for myself. I'll eventually change the internal battery when the time comes! I paid $45 for the 1st one and around $60, 3 yrs later for our second one at CostCo.
Just ordered my first replacement battery for PPRH5 model. Had it for 7 yrs never really used the compressor for car tires just bike tires about 5 times. Charged it once a month overnight religiously. Good unit for the time being.
@@surfcombat new batteries are $40-$60 dollars on Amazon depending on brand and capacity. I decided to try and revive mine by adding fresh battery acid. You can purchase from AutoZone, Napa or O’reilly’s. I think I paid $9 for 1gallon and have used it to revive my car battery as well. Do be careful when handling this stuff! Make sure to wear safety glasses and rubber gloves! It did work to revive my little charger, but only time will tell how long it will last.
Mine quit taking a charge after maybe a year. I checked the AC adapter and it was putting out 14 volts. How do you test if the battery itself is bad? My concern with trying to fix it myself is how do you know if it isn't something else that is bad, like a bad circuit board? I'd just trash this one and by a different brand but I am broke now. Still, don't really think it is worth the effort. Like James A Kovalsky said below, some Chinese Co. bought the name and build junk.
Glad I found this video as it clearly shows how to work on it however, I must admit that mine has worked flawlessly for the past 8 years until now, the battery started to fail. The air compressor works very well and all other components keep working so, I guess it could be luck or similar. Anyway, thanks very much for the video!!!
Mine showed up with the jumper cables nonfunctional, the negative cable bolt on the battery inside was loose. Seems fine now, added some air tool oil to the compressor to help it survive a bit longer maybe..? Its duty cycle(10 on 30 off) is so low its gonna be hard to get any real use from it.
I had mine over 3 years and it worked well, EXCEPT for the air compressor - I never bought it for that, only the jump starter. Thanks for the video showing how to take it apart (screw locations) because I may replace the battery that will only charge to about 11.97 v now. Wal-mart actually has their own brand and they are better and come with a 120v outlet (inverter) too for about the same or less $$ than this.
its not even that good of a jump starter. Brand new won't even jump my van from dead. If you got a car with smaller batteries, I'm sure its fine. Unfortunately besides my cars, I have 3 trucks. This thing is going in the junk.
Yes I bought my 1200 unit and compressor only worked a couple of times.I took it apart and its a small o ring that's shredded.Do not recommended. Now to find a replacement o- ring.
I've had mine for a little over 5 years and only has recently crapped out. Also the compressor is shit. It's only an emergency compressor. It wasn't meant for continuous use. If you need a compressor get a separate one and put it next to the booster in the back of your vehicle. Any thank you for showing the inside of the casing, now I know what I'll be looking forward to
Just replaced the battery in my old b&d booster. While inside I found a wire broke off at the compressor. Only used it a couple or three times but ok since the inverter and lighter ports and jumper still worked. Finally the battery just gave out. Found crappy connection terminals at the klixon switch just before entering the compressor motor. Fairly certain the switch is overload protection for the motor. Reconnected with solder. Hose to gauge wouldn't stay on and had a crack. Cut and capped it. No gage but compressor works great. Anyway how accurate are the guages? After seeing the compressor on your vid I realized it's the same as mine. Maybe being a little harsh on Stanley. These manufacturers are probably all using the same generic components and slapping their names on the end product with the exception of the high end units. My battery was also a SEL. It was a 19 ah and after poring over the multitudes of batteries actually found a 20 ah direct replacement cheaper and longer warranty than the 19. Looks like I may have compressor issues in my future after seeing yours. Like all batteries there is a life expectancy and replacement is way better than tossing the pack and buying a new one especially a more expensive unit with the additional features. Also Advance/Auto Zone etc. will take the old batteries. Thanks for sharing you project.
Good job on repair. Mine just stopped working as well. Can you provide a more detailed explanation of how you repaired yours? I don't want to junk it yet. I've only had it just under a year.
Here's a tip don't use the transformer get a battery maintainer and attach it to the internal battery terminals with the ring connectors that will keep your unit fully charged at optimal power and make the battery last longer. I did it with mine and it's much better than the AC adapter that comes with most because they want it disconnected once it's fully charged and if you keep it at home like me it can go dead before you use it. But a good battery maintainer will give the battery the equivalent of exercising to maintain it's power, health, longevity and optimal charge..
I got the 1000 Stanley jump start, the buttons do not come on anymore when it's not pulled in. I charged it overnight and when switched on the dial it will not turn on with the buttons pushed. I want to sell it cause I want something better.
I would just check eBay or Amazon or Google Stanley parts but if I were you I wouldn't waste a penny on that thing purchase a Dewalt they're awesome mines been working for four years no issues
DO N O T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP! Stanley should be ASHAMED❕ I have a $100+ door stopper. Stanley won't make any effort to rectify the problem unless you pay more $$$. I'm disabled, on limited income. Saved up enough $$$ to buy one of these for an emergency. Put it in my truck. A few months later, emergency happened - I had dead battery AND a flat tire very late at night in the winter (snowing & 28°). I made sure it was fully charged when I put it in my truck. This unit not only would NOT jump my battery, it wouldn't fill my tire either. I was alone & stranded, 70 miles from home. Had receipt, tried to return/exchange it for one that worked. It was obviously never used, still in the box. Despite supposedly having a 1 YEAR warranty Walmart wouldn't exchange it for a working one. They have 90 day return policy and I was on day 92. I was told to contact Stanley. They said I needed to ship it to them to be repaired. They wouldn't cover cost of shipping. Problem is, it's so heavy and I live in B.F.E. It would have cost more to ship it back to Stanley than what I paid for it. Total B.S. 🤬😡🤬😡🤬
He is right at the 6:00 min mark. I was driving and thought my car was messed up , i pulled over checked my car and found out the thing was on. Kept doing it till i finally just took it out my car
I got one it won’t change up so I check so I checked Stanleys website and due to the many bad reviews Stanley has ask you email them saying they would like to resolve your issues so check grids car trans linkage was broken turns out ford has a recall n will fix it free
Had mine since 2015 and compressor did stop working 3 years ago and then battery failed to recharge. On my way to getting new battery ang go on from there
My neighbor gave me one she never used and the compressor tries to start but acts like it can't. The jumper cables have some spark but not enough to jump a car. And it shows it charges up all the way but then if i use the cables or try to start the compressor a few times the battery power drops very fast and takes a while to charge back up. I don't know if the battery is bad but that's my guess. any ideas?
It more than likely just needs u to put distilled water in it with med dropper. It's a sealed lead acid battery it has crushed silica in it that's what makes not spill so after several years it evaporates sum only use distilled water . There's a 95% chance that it'll come all the way back. Before you tear it apart hold it upside down on the charger for about 5 minutes it helps to get zap sum of the sulfation before add water you'll find several videos on RU-vid with people adding water to that type of battery
My compressor stopped working. I went to Harbor Freight and bought the HNBR O-Ring assortment and used the AD14 (1/2'x5/8"x1/16") O-Ring. This fits on the piston inside the compressor body. Added a little grease on the O-Ring when reassembling the compressor. It's pumping like new again!
Mine turns on then off (air compressor) any ideas in the meantime I guess I'll drag out the bigger compressor to air up my flat tire so much for my job interview
I got mine many years ago but only used it a few times when i got it but i went to use it yesterday and when i try charge it i have both red and the green light flashing , Wont charge so i guess its garbage huh ?
Had one for years. I think they are only meant to last a couple of years. It jump my car and filled my tires in a pinch multiple times. This is an emergency item. If you want to fill a bunch of tires get a dedicated pump.
I change the plastic compression ring to a piece of leather shoe lace. Saturate the shoe lace with synthetic oil first. Will last longer and will not melt under heat generated during long pump times.
Unfortunately I have same problem and it would be an easy fix if I could find the right 0-ring but regular o rings don't last since they are different. It looks more like a u cup seal ring that was on there but can't find them. Anyone find the exact seal/o-ring?
If your unit is less than one year old call the manufacturer search the number on the Internet search Stanley customer service products tell them this is less than one year old and it is defected by law all electronica companies have to fix your product or replace it within one year from the purchase date there is a code on the unit that will tell them how old it is hopefully yours is less than one year old if you still need parts for the unit hopefully you can find them for sale on eBay or Amazon I would check eBay first
Kooper Hopefully you answer this soon as you can.I'm having the same issue but how do I know if my battery jumper it self is working. The part that charges the battery Can you help me with that please
The whole damn thing is going to go out and it won't power back up after it goes dead once unless I'm doing something way wrong mine is a Stanley FatMax 700 350 amp
Well fortunately I fix mine it was 1200 model for mine they use a plastic piston but rubber ring 😂. Anyways all u need to do is buy a universal piston ring at the parts store. Make sure the ring u use is not too tight or too loose. Then make sure u use some form of lubrication. For me I use grease they use for tires and thats it fixed working perfectly.
bought one a couple weeks ago, charged it, put it in the toolbox in my truck and it wont turn on now unless its plugged in charging but charge isnt working either now
Thank you so much for this information. I bought a Stanley 1000A, I didn't use it much and it doesn't want to charge 😫 I was a bit upset 😥cause my budget was not all that great at the moment and I was planning to get rid of it (trash). One last try before I trash it and I came across your video 🤗 I'm gonna fix it lol 😁 once again thank you. Wish me luck😊 .
I change the plastic compression ring to a piece of leather shoe lace. Saturate the shoe lace with synthetic oil first. Will last longer and will not melt under heat generated during long pump times.
Mine stopped fully charging pretty much right away after I got it a few years ago. I'm not even going to bother replacing any parts because screw that, I already paid $100+ for it and I'm not interested in polishing a turd. I'll be getting a Dewalt later. I don't fully understand the tech stuff but the video was still interesting. I at least know what the problem is now.
I bought one in November 2019 and always kept it charged and had to drive to rescue my wife when her Jeep wrangler wouldn't start. It didn't even try to turn the engine over! So out came the 4gauge jumper cables and it fired right up. When I got home I recharged the STANLEY 1000/500 Amp Jump Starter (J5C09) and tried to use it to start my smallest zero turn that had a weak battery and Nope! Again the Stanley failed to start it. The cheap jump pack that I purchased from Harbor Freight 5 years ago started it right up. My Stanley is still under warranty so I have never taken it apart to see the brand/size battery is in it but I am guessing it is the cheapest one they could buy in bulk from China. I can say nothing about the air compressor yet as I really need it for the jump pack more than anything else. Stanley needs to upgrade to a better brand of batteries for these things.
Shine a flashlight in the port see if one of the prongs is bent if everything looks good I would open it up and see if there’s a loose wire let me know how it turns out
swapped out a dead battery with your help. pro tip. don't fuss with the stupid tiny screws on the compressor to just change the battery... instead be a man and use a step drilll bit to give clearance required
Has anyone found out "somehow" where you can buy just the whole new compressor assembly? I just want to clip the two wires and swap it out. Stanley..........They're trying to tell me some BS that there is no user servicable parts that can be replaced or some shit like that. Then I asked them "well where can I get it fixed?". Turns out that they don't know. Anyone that has ever installed a car stereo and just plane speakers can swap out the burnt compressor!! If anyone has found out where to buy one, please let me know. Thank you.
A fix (credit to Jack Joseph): clean, then wrap the piston head in electrical tape. I then put a coating of grease on the tape to help out the motor some. I then inflated my rear motorcycle tire from 30 to 40 PSI within the usual time. I can't imagine this will last long, but who knows, and it's working for now with about a 1¢ repair. Thanks to Jack and the guy who made this video!
I change the plastic compression ring to a piece of leather shoe lace. Saturate the shoe lace with synthetic oil first. Will last longer and will not melt under heat generated during long pump times.
@@eacars9356 I use mine weekly for my motorcycle, mostly, and our car/truck periodically. 9 months later, no problems. I'll upgrade to leather when it goes, but so far so good.
The compressor uses a nylon ring not a rubber ring that wears out and cant be replaced. The booster battery can be replaced using a battery from a electric mobile chair store that sells power scooters for the handy cap...At about the cost for $79.00 Canadian compared to replacing the entire unit at a cost of $149.00 to $199.00
