Let us show you how to ride dirt bikes using enduro techniques and dirt bike techniques. Cross training puts emphasis on traction but flat track turns definitely have their place! This is an advanced enduro technique used by the world's top extreme enduro and endurocross riders - Taddy Blasuziak, Jonny Walker and Graham Jarvis.

"The transition from trials to extreme enduro is quite smooth really because the technical side is already there."- Ben Hemingway, 3rd place in The Tough One 2012
The trials emphasis of cross training avoids losing traction, but sliding your rear wheel is a handy technique on relatively smooth corners. It is also a good idea to get used to the rear sliding out so you can control this in a relaxed way if it happens unexpectedly in slippery conditions. Speed, roosting, jumps and power slides are fun on a dirt bike but often it means we've picked up nasty habits that are slow us down. As Graham Jarvis says "Going fast is the easy bit, it’s going slowly that will help you develop control." The best extreme enduro riders like Jarvis are so smooth you don't realise how difficult the terrain is until you see them flying past the less experienced riders. So cross training applies trials techniques to enduro riding for improved dirt bike skills, although not in this case with flat track turns.
BODY POSITION FOR FLAT TRACK TURNS
Sitting too far back will upset the balance of the bike for flat track turns. If the terrain is very smooth with no obstacles you can slide your boot along the ground for extra stability.
Once you are comfortable with flat track-style corners on a flat consistent surfaces, try it on terrain that has slight bumps and changing surfaces. If you carefully read the terrain you can usually predict where the rear wheel will slide and where it will hook up again. Remember in most cases a flat track turn will only be useful on a relatively flat turn. Cross training blends trials and enduro techniques so these enduro training vids feature many dirt riding skills and trials techniques for better off road riding, including power slides and flat track turns.

What's great is that althought this is a hard enduro channel and not a lot of it i can do on my wr250r, especially as a beginner, stuff like this looks great fun and i can definetely do on my bike!

I’ve been coming back to these older videos over and over. I’ve been working on tight fast turns in my small yard. I’ve got a tight figure 8 with a 14” log at the interchange. Forces me to keep my eyes up to anticipate body position for the log and I have some things to add. DONT DONT DONT drop the elbow/shoulder or lean the body too much. Lean the bike. Keep the eyes moving forward, try not to focus on a specific spot. I always lose my line if I focus on the deep rut. I see the rut and immediately look to the log. As I approach the log I start looking towards the corner. I believe the most important time for perfect body position is this. Lastly. Throttle. Trust the throttle to hold the bike. The bike becomes upset/unbalanced if the throttle is choppy or intermittent. Im doing low revs and as soon as I have the front wheel where it needs to be, I slightly increase throttle and power out of the corner. Now I’m no A class rider folks. But after about 30 minutes a day for 3 days. It really came together gaining LOTS of confidence. Only problem is….I hardly EVER hit corners like this while in single track. I’m going to set up a camera and run 20 laps sitting/ 20 laps standing and see where I’m at time wise. I’m most comfortable standing but it feels slower doing these drills. If anyone gives a shit, and I remember, I’ll comment the results.

👍👍 of all things I find tight cornering on grass and flat surfaces the most difficult. I always feel like the front is going to wash out and go too wide
@crosstrainingenduro

And it's counter intuitive that the best way to get front wheel traction is sitting forward on the seat....

yeah you can use your boot for stability but I used to race and got told/seen it happened, some guy put his foot down and it caught something and tore his acl so I don't drag my foot I just use it to balance.. that's why I wear astrict knee braces when I ride it's supposed to help prevent that not to mention they're way better than knee cups but worth the money

Seems like all the sliding is good for is sharper turns while going faster and that its just losing traction / kicking up dirt... But i learned something! the technical aspect of the foot and how riders hold it out like that when cornering in motocross... NEVER understood WHY lol ty for that
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
i always figured the foot was out drag along the ground if needed but it seems it's mainly to act as an outrigger for better balance, i put it out a lot more nowadays as a result.

Do you need to force the handel bars into a counter steer? Or do they naturally want to counter steer?
@dathonlawler81
@dathonlawler81 2 года назад
My 03 KTM 250 didn’t want to go down into the turn, I had to force it down. And my new husky wants to naturally turn deeper into the turn. I hold it back. Based off that. Each bike is different.

Can you help me with a little issue? Sometimes the rear is sliding nicely when suddenly it finds grip again. When that happens the bike shakes violently (so much that it trew me off a few times!) and wants to flip in the other direction. is it because of too little trottle or is something wrong with my position? Thanks!
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 9 лет назад
yoshyoka hard to say without all the details, but generally if you are sitting forward as much as possible and have your inside boot in line with the front axle you should be able to ride it through smoothly when the rear wheel does suddenly find grip.
@yoshyoka
@yoshyoka 9 лет назад
CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES I usually sit as in front as possible. I might add that it feels like the back violently gets back in line with the front causing the bike to flip over the other side. It happend to me also once during a supermotard race on asphalt. (Thanks again!)
@JimmiSez
@JimmiSez 9 лет назад
yoshyoka It sounds to me like the bike is too upright with not enough throttle applied. I did that a lot while learning and high sided until I got tired of wiping out, that's when I got more aggressive and got it right. Throttle control is key.
@PriestKikyo
@PriestKikyo 8 лет назад
Yeah that's called high siding and you can't do much about it until you just get better at doing what it is you're doing.

If you're on a flat track you really want your foot digging into the floor with a lot of pressure, almost acting like a third wheel or a peg. This is where you normally wear a steel shoe.
