What would you say if you could tune your FM radio and receive a station that is over 1,300 Miles away?
Normally called FM DXing, or "He/She is a FM DXer" gives a sense of adventure to this aspect of radio listening.

The search for FM distant stations(DX) has sparked more excitement here at Todderbert Headquarters.
The patrons at Patreon have coined the term Project FM DXeti for this endeavor.
Multiple receivers and recorders will be setup to catch these sporadic e-skip FM Broadcasting stations from all over the US. A small measure of success can be found within this video, along with an education of how these FM signals are able to travel such a great distance.
My Sangean PR-D15 has been running the longest and has had the opportunity to find the most stations so far to date. You can use any small digital receiver with a DSP to help keep you locked into that particular frequency. An inexpensive recorder such as the Q3 makes a great companion on your quest for glory.
Good luck on your FM DX station hunting! Share your finds here in the comment section.
Thank you for watching.

As a teenager I belonged to a “DX” club for about 3 months. Each member had different things they would DX. One guy was into DXing T.V. Signals. And a couple were into DXing FM. Others, AM, SW...... On guy CW..... So I’ve heard of this Phenomenon before, and have known people that do this. And , like you, multiple radios and recorders. But all they had to record on were cassette recorders. The guy who DXed TV had a heck of a setup, including one of those old bulky ( ca: 1977) video recorders that TV stations used for their Mobile Units. You got some real catches. 2 of them in Florida❗️ Cool. 📻🙂

Excellent video! Great idea about setting up the recorders! I will have to try that! Back in the 70's I received WCCO-FM in stereo from Minneapolis - St. Paul Minnesota for a good amount of time. This was amazing considering, at the time, I lived in Mebane, North Carolina! 950 miles away. As a young Dx'er back then I was very excited!

Back in 1980 there was a heat wave going all over the country. I live in PA and at the time Oklahoma and Texas FM stations were coming in on my stereo receiver. I did call a DJ in Dallas and the office staff did not play the show over the phone while on hold. So I told the receptionist why I was calling and I knew the DJ would turn his monitor down before talking to me. After the receptionist told him why I was calling, he took me off hold and asked me what he was playing. Well, I could hear 10cc and "The Things We Do For Love" on my stereo and told him that was what he was playing. He got all excited about that. In the same heatwave we received a TV station from Quebec, Canada.

Your opening makes me remember about my FM experience when I was childhood. One day in 2014, with my dad phone using headphones as antenna to receive FM signals, I had found an China station at 90.6 MHz. It's signal only about 2 minutes, then there's no anything. Recently, I'm still use a phone to receive FM signals. Far stations is more stable. At 12 February, I had received a China station at 101.3 MHz, but the signal is not good. At 5 April, I founded two new stations at 96.3 (very good signal) and 101.9 MHz (medium signal). My location is Hanoi, Vietnam.

I worked in radio for many years... We refereed to FM DX as "ducting" and it wasn't always cool. It sometimes meant that our local FM might be heard a thousands miles away but not in town ... People would call up and complain that they couldn't hear our stations! :)

This is an excellent and informative video. Thanks for sharing. Well done with all those FM DX catches. I use a Tecsun PL-390 and a Digitech AR-1745 for portable FM Dx'ing and a Sony XDR S3HD for home FM DX'ing. I have been into FM Dx'ing since 1974, when FM radio was introduced to Australia. I have also done TV DX'ing, back in the analogue TV days since 1971 until analogue closed here in 2013. I have a RU-vid channel with many of my TV and radio DX catches included. My furthest FM DX catch has been Irian Jaya (Papua) last year from here in Melbourne Australia. I have also received Radio Suara Timor in Kupang Indonesia from Melbourne back in 2009. The best time to receive FM DX is during the summer.

Definitely at art form, without a doubt. I lived through most of the analogue TV DX era and that felt like discovering a brand new galaxy. FM DX can a bit more challenging, with FM using Band 2, as compared to analogue TV using Band 1, along with Bands 3, 4 and 5. Here is a sample of one of my furthest FM DX catches from here in Melbourne Australia. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E4_1J-rYaLc.html

One night in 1991, I was staying a few days in Bonavista Bay in Newfoundland and about 9pm in mid august of that year. I was getting stations from Providence, Boston, and down the easter seaboard. You know, I remember hearing this phenomenon over the years but I really didn’t appreciate what was happening until now. I would be tuning across the band and getting hits on frequencies that customarily weren’t ones I tuned to. They would soon fade out on me like your recordings indicated and then would be gone. This I so cool!

The ionsphere has to be super charged so that E layer is strong during the day. The atmosphere settles to much in evening for those long distance stations to make their "hops". Sporadic is the name of the game for sure. Lots of fading in and out, it is rare that one lasts minutes.

As a 40 year broadcast radio vet, send an email to the Program Director of these stations. Some (like me!) would be thrilled to know you had picked the station up from so far away; other guys won't care. But, for radio guys like me, I'd LOVE to know if someone picked up the station 1000 miles away. Awesome! Nicely done. Of course, my user name online most everywhere is 'AMFMDX' for a reason. ;-)

Suddenly the feed was from a country station in north Michigan maybe 600 km away and it was clear. The phenomenon lasted less than an hour. It was early morning about 8 or 9 am the country station broadcast at the same frequency but there was no way it should have been able to push the Detroit station out of the way, yet it did

For use out here on the west coast, I have never experienced what most would call ë-skip" on the east coast, but I have heard distant radio stations come in from bouncing off airplanes flying over the area. I have been into FM DXing since I was a teen in the 80s. I was so involved with DXing, that I Dxed TV on a regular basis. Back then, most radios ( especially boom boxes ) sucked at tuning in stations unless they were local. When commercial air planes flew over our area, I knew I was going to get something far away, for a brief period.

Hello! I discovered the DX recepcion of FM stations and TV channels in the 80’s when I was young. I have some TV recordings in Beta tapes. Also, almost like 100 audio cassettes with audio from FM stations. I’m in Mérida, México, in Yucatan Peninsula. Last time that I listened DX FM stations was last year, in my car, when I was in the middle of the jungle. Suddenly starts to listening some station. I have some video on my cell phone, driving my car and listening this stations. As you said, all depends about the atmospheric conditions. As I wrote before, I’m in Yucatan Peninsula, and the FM stations that I can listen when this phenomenon occurs, are from the Gulf Coast in the South of USA. From all states, Texas to Florida. I enjoy a lot the DX listening. I’m returning to listening the Shortwave. I have bougth recently a Radioshack SW radio. A cheap model to start. Thank you!

Great vid! Hearing some confusion in the questions...there's no magic radio or antenna, he's using the PR-D15 w/ stock telescopic. The keys are, 1) find a frequency in your area that has nothing on it (the hardest part). He's using 92 MHz, so the DX stations he's catching are 92 MHz. 2) He's using a digitally tuned radio (PR-D15) so he can lock on a frequency as opposed to an analog/slide rule tuning which could be between frequencies or drift off frequency. The Q3 is just for recording, so he doesn't have to listen (PR-D15) 24-7, as some of these skips are very short in duration (seconds). These are great tips & also work for AM & SW.

Yeah and the low end is the best. I picked up NYC and Denver Colorado from Orlando Florida when I was in college. I was at a friend's parents home and had a radio shack best FM antenna which was rated at 175 miles and it lived up to it's rating. I picked up on a regular basis FM stations about 150 miles away but when I was trying to find a classical music station I picked up WQXR from NYC. Then I tuned the radio to another classical radio station from Denver Colorado. This was done in the summer of 1982.

I live in a large metro area and can't put up an outdoor antenna so I'm curious if you are using the Sangean PR-D15 on just the whip antenna to record these DX stations? I have a Tecsun PL-310ET but have not tried to use it on FM yet. I do know I have a TON of RF interference where I live so I'm not sure if trying to capture FM DX would just lead to frustration. Thanks for the interesting video!

I use the standard whip. Move the radio to an outdoor facing wall or window. Try to reduce RFI on the "clear" FM frequency if possible. When a strong E-Skip occurs you may receive the signal like it is a strong local station. You may even receive it in stereo ;)

The second time I received WSMR, I recorded it with my iPhone. I have since recorded more E-Skip and Tropo catches every chance I have. My farthest reception with a station's callsign on RDS is 91.7 CBK-FM-3 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on June 15. RDS: "CBK-FM-3". I received 92.9 KKBQ Pasadena, Texas (over KBEZ Tulsa, Oklahoma) and 88.7 KUHF Houston, Texas (over KWTU Tulsa, Oklahoma) on October 18 in the evening. The latest I received WSMR was on December 4 in the afternoon.

Wichita Falls, TX FTW! Are those little Tecsuns not capable of recording radio directly to the SD card? Do any of the radios with a record function allow for recording straight off the radio? Back in the 80’s I connected my stereo to my VCR and I would record 8 hours of music onto a T-160 VHS tape in EP mode overnight and then dub the songs I liked over to cassette to make mix tapes I could play in my Walkman. The crazy things we do.
@todderbert
@todderbert 6 лет назад
In the video I mention the use of the micro SD cards. The SD cards are taken out and then put it into a computer at the end of the day. Audacity is used to open the files, then I search for the tell tale spikes in the audio stream. Usually I have about seventeen hours of audio per recorder. Recording directly from the headphone output to the line-in jack. You could use the onboard microphone, but that would defeat the "running in silence mode". The Q3 is an incredible pocket recorder for the price.
@gklinger
@gklinger 6 лет назад
todderbert I got all that. What I meant is can’t those radios record directly from the radio to the SD card with the volume down to zero? My old Sangean ATS-818ACS can record from any frequency directly to the cassette tape and you can still turn the volume down so you’re running silent. I use to record Art Bell overnight that way. I figured there must be a radio with an SD card recorder function that can do the same.
@todderbert
@todderbert 6 лет назад
Yes this radio can record from it's own FM receiver, but the reception on the Q3 is not great, because the antenna is that little wrist strap. Just tested, the recorder will record it's own FM station at zero volume level and is playable, changing the volume has no effect on the recording. The captured audio is ok, a bit heavy on the bass with not much on the highs. When using the Line-In, the bass/treble becomes dependent on the attached radio.

Even though it's on the NOAA weather radio band, technically FM (162.400-162.550 MHz,) in mid January 2020, I managed to log KEC55 Fort Worth, TX from central Missouri, about 530 miles away. Not sure if it was a skip or tropo because skips on high frequencies (like 2m, NOAA weather, VHF 7-13) are rare and tend to cover shorter distances and high frequencies (including 70cm and UHF television) are more prone to tropo. 6m and VHF 2-6 are more prone to skips. The farthest 88-108 MHz FM stations received at the time were from around Ames, IA. That makes me wonder if the MUF was actually above 163 MHz somewhere in between Texas to Missouri or if maybe the KEC55 signal encountered a skip somewhere and then reached my location with tropo.

Could be the V115, they are noisy. Try a longer patch cable to get the V115, and its power source as far away from the Sangean as possible. Use the headphone out on the Sangean to see how that goes. I run a similar V115 recorder, but run it off a battery, no USB. The best recordings I have made from my Sangean was with the Tecsun Q3.

"The Heaviside layer, sometimes called the Kennelly-Heaviside layer, named after Arthur E. Kennelly and Oliver Heaviside, is a layer of ionised gas occurring roughly between 90km and 150 km (56 and 93 mi) above the ground - one of several layers in the Earth's ionosphere. It is also known as the E region." Known as an E-Skip when it is charged by Solar Activity. FM, and VHF signals can bounce off this layer back to earth giving great distances for normally short bursts.
