Yeah crazy tight eh!! I've never known exhaust or manifold bolts like that on anything else. Well done for following the guide and thanks for for watching and commenting. Glad it helped 👌😁
Everything has a way of coming apart .. if you know it's difficult from the start, you prepare mentally. Doesn't mean it doesn't get frustrating sometimes but... It helps stay calm .. otherwise you could injure yourself or make the situation worse... From my own experience! 👍🐷😁
Really helpful as my van died today, didnt know why at first but looking at the video and redaing online has shown me that it is 95% the Turbo which has blown. Going to get the proffesionals to fix it as I know my limitations LOL
Very simple to take the intake pipe off and check, see if the turbo spins or has loads of play in the shaft 👍 if you've not really done much mechanical work, this is pretty advanced 👍🐷
@@PiggyPower I think the amount of oil in the engine bay on the left means it is a bit terminal, hence why I'm going to let the real mechanics sort it and not play with it myself, ignorance might be bliss but in my hands it's dangerous
@@visiononsystems4491 if it's the turbo, there shouldn't be any oil in the engine bay, unless the turbo oil feed has let go. What a actually happened? Engine stopped?
Yes probably good advice. My van smokes badly and oil is coming out the exhaust. Last year I would have done this myself and spent two weeks moaning and swearing. So yes best pay someone to do it .
Thank you for this in depth guide, managed to get turbo off done everything else needed is there a part two how to out it back on! Just rewatching and doing everything in reverse! 😅 hard work for a plumber ! But we’ll get there
Thank you for taking the time to example and guide us through your work. I have a "puma 2.2" fitted in a Citroen Relay and at the very least you've inspired me to at least inspect for play in the turbo bearings. Hopefully I won't be needing to remove the turbo (133000 miles). The engine wasn't coming on boost changing from 2nd to 3rd until it revved above 2500rpm. But then cam in strong again. Now off to find info on the EGR vale (gulp) Thanks again
That is odd. It might be a number of things, be good to look at any fault codes stored or live data, MAF v requested boost v actual. 👌🐷 I've known these turbos and engines fail way before 133k. Keep up the maintenance on it 👌
Great video. Hoping im able yo replace my turbo without too much issues now. Though i was opting to replace it with a rebuilt turbo rather than a new one but now im not too sure
Any reason you are not suggesting to send the turbo for reconditioning/rebuild? Way cheaper than brand new turbo from Ford. First class video though! We need one showing DPF removal next 😊
I used a "rebuilt" turbo in this video as it happens. It failed within a couple hundred miles. The claim went on for months. Sent the turbo back etc etc they claimed this and that, basically they use cheap nasty bearings and don't build them properly and have such stupid wording in their warranty which essentially means they can decide to pay or not. Which I believe they never ever have. It was 60% of the price of a new one. But was a waste of money and took a day of my unpaid time. Plus hours afterward dealing with the scumbag "pro" rebuild company. Buy once. Forget.
I’ve got a transit custom 2014 coming in tomorrow. Turbo charger underboost and turbo charge boost control sensor A performance stick Low. Were these the codes you were getting from this van in the video ?
I've got these codes before from a faulty turbo VNT actuator (very common) ... To diagnose, see target position and actual position on live data or a GoPro under the hood looking at the actuator as you drive 👍 if it is working and still getting those faults and there are no boost leaks ... investigate the turbo itself
@piggypower great video helped me to remove my turbo, just waiting to receive replacement refurb unit. Struggling to remove the oil feed pipe though or even find where it connects to block! …. Any tips pointers or links 🤞🏻 🙏
How long did this take you roughly, its my daily work van and contemplating doing it myself. im told my actuator is the problem but ford doesnt sell it separately
Ford don't sell separately, tried 5 different companies. Gone down ebay route only have non genuine and can't guarantee it will sync properly. Wreckers don't sell with out turbo and it the same price for aftermarket new as second hand genuine
This gonna help me out a lot! Thanks for the guided video my man, turbos started to whine at me. Think it’s time for a re-con.. 3.1hours in the book to do this, now is that realistic Or are we talking more like 4/5hours 😂
If you've not done it before... Or not done any mechanics before... 5-6hrs. I'd allow 4-5hrs as a amateur. But if you can get the main bolts undone it's really not that difficult tbh
@@PiggyPower trained as a mechanic god 14years back now at college, always done my own work if I could. Saves me paying the labour costs for a garage. I’ll let you know how it goes, planning to start taking her apart on Monday evening.
Okay, got everything off apart from underneath. Thought I’d be able to get under without jacking up 😂 Again, thanks a lot for this video. Helped out a massive amount 👌🏽
Was going well on the first 3 main bolts, the top one has turned to cheese and just rounded inside the socket... So have to get a mini air grinder on it and cut it out ...
Sucks doesn't it. Ensure correct oil and do oil changes more frequently will prolong the turbo use. As will allowing the engine to warm before loading it up and cool after heavy driving before switch off.
hi great video - thank you, at the start you mention a list of items that are recommended to change along with the turb - where would i find that list please?
@@PiggyPower had a turbo replaced by ford main dealer but there was no mention of cost of oil pump.... new turbo failed 2 months later less than 10k miles having developed a whinning noises that got worse...2nd new turbo fitted by same main dealer and its making same whinning noise after 200 miles.... clearly something causing the problem and im concerned maybe its the oil pump....
Whilst it's annoying.... All under warranty, it's the main dealer being daft, not you. The bulletin about the parts to change comes FROM FORD so they are the idiots tbh. I'd suggest talking to the manager and asking to take it to a different dealership and getting a replacement hire van for free in the meantime.
@@PiggyPower mate im sorry if im taking up your time and really appreciate your replying - where do i find the ford bulletin please - theres nothing on any website that i can see
Mine has done close to 300 000km, and have started to consume 2l of oil under 20 000km. I think it has to be the turbo, im going to look att the intercooler if it has exes of oil in it.
@@PiggyPower yes turbo is the same as you except there are power steering pipes or air con pipes restricting my access to the oil pipes and the bottom nut near the cross member you remove. no where near the access you have. Its a 2.2 transit custom 2015
According to ford that metal gasket you last took off between the turbo and manifold doesn’t exist there saying it’s face to face sealing I think there full of dog eggs where was your fitting kit from if you could
@@PiggyPower 3 ford dealerships all said they can see it but the computer says no I know they exist I can visibly see the gasket outline on both faces plus your video helped
I wonder if you could help me I had a turbo fitted just over 12 months ago a Brand New, ford turbo, and now it is broke the garage says a foreign object as entered. The turbo the fins are damaged. Now so who’s at fault me all the garage and Wood Fords give me a new turbo with it being in the warranty.
The fins are damaged... Inducer or exducer? Are they saying a foreign object entered from the airbox? Or the oil? Also, when fitted, who fitted it and did they follow the Ford Warranty instructions including replace the oil feed and drain, replacing the oil pickup and pump?
HELPFUL HINTS - When Removing Nuts/Bolts-1st Losen Nut/Bolt - Now Cold - Add Some Grease Inside Of Socket , It Acts Like A Temporay Glue , To Hold Nut/Bolt , So You Dont Drop Nut/Bolt You Undo. If Engine Is Hot , Wait For Cool Down - B4 Adding Grease Inside Of Socket.ENJOY...
Or just don't drop the nut or bolt. If I had to do that for every nut and bolt, it would take twice as long! Proper quality tools also hold nuts/bolts 10x better than cheap rounded sockets.
@@PiggyPower I have replaced the turbo but is flat as a pancake till 2200. No power until then. Comes up with code turbo underboost now and then. Really really slow until turbo kickes in. Any ideas ? Thanks
@@rtonge3753 did you reset the codes and all the preset parameters? Watched live data to see where something is up? Throttle v target v actual v actuator position?
Is the turbo the same model that’s fitted to the 2.0 hdi /tdci? I only ask as I know there’s some “hybrid” turbos available for the 2.2 engine for fitting to things like the 2.2 diesel mondeo st for those chasing more performance. Should they be the same part I might have an upgrade option to upgrade my 2.0 hdi.
@@PiggyPower it has been messed with by a previous owner but I can’t confirm current state of tune. So it’s pure conjecture from me atm. I intend to upgrade the intercooler as the current one is past best - can’t see any point of a straight replacement when a couple of days work and an extra £50 gets me something better and hopefully deals with the heat soak over long journeys. Having a better turbo option seems like a good idea, if everything else is in place then a trip to the rolling road for a remap isn’t too far of a stretch…
Yes yes they are. If you can get them hot in some way, it will help, including running the engine for a bit. Or a mahoosive bar or the hulk on hand. I am a small weakling though and got them undone, so it is possible!
...likely because this isn't a video on how to diagnose a faulty turbocharger. There is a dozen or more reasons a turbocharger might need replacing and a video could be done on every single one of them. Diagnostics is a lengthy process to be honest.
