In This video, I make a flint striker as in a flint and steel traditional fire starting kit.
The steel used needs to very high carbon something like 1095. In this case, I used a drill rod which is probably an alloy such as A2. After forging to shape, it is hardened and NOT tempered as we want it to be as hard as possible. The action of the hard steel against the hard flint creates sparks. If a spark is caught on a piece of char ( simply charred cotton cloth), it can be nurtured into a flame, in skilled hands. There are different designs possible, from simple to complex. A beginner and novice smith can find a fun and challenging project in forging a flint striker

People need to understand the importance of dropping the piece while working. Great stress relief for the steel.

Your medieval B-type striker is a very nice example of the type, I favour B-types and have several examples in my collection.

Just try to put your cotton in a closed metal box and put it on a fire for like 20 min, it will transform the entire matter without burning it. You'll have a perfect material to catch a spark ;) Very nice job on the striker btw, i love watching your video !

agreed the way he made the char cloth is the worst way of doing it, as it will produce some bit that are charred and some bits that are not. Love his striker though, a classic B type.

Your ability to see the goal while working the steel is enviable! Lost me for a minute but brought me back. I like the design! Well done

Where do you get flint that sparks so much?
@RedmarKerkhof
@RedmarKerkhof 3 года назад
I've found flint like that along the roadside before. Funnily enough, flint that I brought home from my holiday in France gives much better sparks than the Dutch flint I had. Must be a slightly different composition. Just pick up all the flint you can find and try them out.

Bitchin flint striker! very cool little project, Drill Rod is typically O1 tool steel (at least here in the states) I love using it for making punches and tools etc Pretty easy to heat treat.

Bahaha "thanks for the comments on that. I really enjoyed y'all making fun of me"..... Gotta be a good sport to be in the eye of the public my friend. I appreciate all you do. I now have use for the drill rod I purchased some time ago and I now know why it crumbled on me. Thank you Thak. Beautiful work

Nice work Robb. And when not used for starting fires, it would make a great knuckle duster for the Greek soldier when the battle gets down to fundamentals. And speaking of flint, hey all you Canadian skinflints: stop handling loonies like they are manhole covers. Get over to patreon and support one of our own.
