This video was very informative, and very nice thank you, and no you would rather want the oil in my opinion, the leftover carbon in the oil adheres too the outside of the metal, not all the way through bit through enough for a hardened shell, or so I'm told lol

Finally try case hardening that mild steel one. Heat it very hot and dip in motor oil several times until cool or some other liquid with lots of carbon
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 5 лет назад
Good idea
@JustinTopp
@JustinTopp 5 лет назад
Also for the twist you wanted you could’ve dipped it in water slowly to stop it untwisting the steel doesn’t have enough carbon to be negatively effected. My tip for them is use a scotch bright pads.

Adam Bryant at most they are medium carbon steel. So sorta. They can harden more than mild steel but proper high carbon is much better

Yes, I tried to do that, but it sucked the heat out of the rest, and I just wasn’t fast enough to do it. I really would have needed a good hot torch to isolate it.

I know this is an older video, but I wasn’t sure how to contact you to ask this question. I want to get a cheap (but not junk) belt sander for some knife forging projects. What do you think of the one you use in this video and a lot of your other ones? What brand is it?
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 2 года назад
How cheap you thinking? You wanting to test the waters or actually do this seriously for a while?
@o.ethanbrown1808
@o.ethanbrown1808 2 года назад
Well...right now I’d like something to test the waters and allow me to make some good knives. I would like to do it seriously eventually, but right now I don’t want to spend more than like $70ish.
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 2 года назад
Then yeah go pick up the 1” x 30” from harbor freight. Should be like $50. It’s severely underpowered and the table on it is useless, but it definitely works. With that and an angle grinder you can maker some cool stuff. I still haven’t upgraded lol. I don’t make enough blades to make it worth the investment. And not really a better option unless you want to spend $800.
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 2 года назад
The only other option you might want to consider is a 4” x 36”. It’ll have more power, but IMO it’s more difficult to use. Watch some of ZNA Productions knifemaking videos to get an idea, it’s what he uses.
@o.ethanbrown1808
@o.ethanbrown1808 2 года назад
Right. I have a 4” x 36” belt sander, but trying to get an edge on like my small karambit I just finished is nearly impossible. I think having a 1” belt upright will let me get in the tight spaces. You know how it goes, you want to get something that’s not junk, but also don’t want to spend the load of cash at the moment. You seem to have done decent with the Harbor Freight one so I’ll probably give it a try.

You hate selling things you made? I love selling homemade stuff. Feels good to know people want stuff I made. I’m a knife maker and I like that you told us off when talking about the carbon in spikes. Spike knives are super fun to make in my opinion. I don’t know why but I’m getting prepared to forge Damascus and I’m going to attempt and forge weld a Damascus bit into a railroad spike. There’s no point but I want to for shits and giggles. 15n20 and probably 1095
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 5 лет назад
Selling my stuff...... I dunno but when I finally finish something I’ve put so many hours into I generally would much rather keep it myself. Most things I build I make because I want it in the first place too. Yah I really hate it when people rip on spike knives. Just get over it already folks. Lol. Haha, that Damascus sounds like it will be a lot of fun. I need to try doing some Damascus..... I need to overhaul my forge and get it running hotter though. Good luck 👍
@JustinTopp
@JustinTopp 5 лет назад
Jake Makes the point of a spike knife is novelty not actual use lol. The Damascus is going to be my first project on my new anvil
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 5 лет назад
Totally. Sweet! I wish I could buy a new anvil. Too expensive at the moment, I don’t do enough forging rn to justify the cost ☹️
@JustinTopp
@JustinTopp 5 лет назад
Jake Makes I could only justify it because it was 475$ for 150lb in good shape half the usual price of anvils. It’s also a good Henry Wright semi rare anvil. And I have been forging for 3-4 years and i have been forging almost daily recently. I’m addicted I love it

I definitively recommend a cross peen (or straight peen) hammer, when you has the money dat is. It spreads the material a loooot faster then a rounded hammer.
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 5 лет назад
you mean using the wedge shaped end? I have a small sledge that has that but It's too heavy for me to use for long periods. Skinny arms u know.......
@LawnMowerProductions
@LawnMowerProductions 5 лет назад
Aw ok, but yeah putting all the force on a small area (like the wedge shaped end) spreads the metal faster, another method you could use is tilting your hammer about 25 degrees so when you hit the work piece only a small edge of the hammer hits it instead of the whole hammer. Here's a video I found really helpful, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0BLlGLnSn0E.html It's more about drawing out metal but the methods still work for knife makin.
