Going to try and create a little bit more content this week by showing you things I'm doing day to day.
A bit more vloggie I guess and I know thats not every ones cup of tea. However I have tried very hard to make this one worth a watch. In this video I hope to help you get your tongs together and set up really nice. I'll be showing you at home a couple of ways of making and closing rivets on tongs. I'll also be making some of the tools you will need to do this task.
Hope you enjoy.

Awesome video! Instead of forging in the negative rivet heads in your Tooling you could drill them out. I did that for my first set of riveting tools and they turned out great. I like the slightly pointed rivet heads you get with them.
@starforged
@starforged 4 года назад
A great video. One thing I do is take a punch put a round bar and hammer a flat part in the punch. This does two things. It identifies the hitting end and also make a flat part that keeps your punch from rolling off your bench or anvil. Thank you for all your help.

Ok…subscribed!…based on the quality and craftsmanship of your project, your explanations, and that you obviously care enough about your craft to get bloody (not the Queen’s English phrase) and filthy dirty…which is an endearing quality. I’ll need to brush up on English phraseology, but will get there!😁

Good stuff Dan I struluggle with rivets I always seem to get some expansion of the river between the tong halves.
@ianlowe4666
@ianlowe4666 4 года назад
If the mating faces of the hinge plates aren't tight up against each other and remain tight up against each other until the rivet is set then this can happen @ Shamrock Forge. If your rivet is a tight fit this is actually a little easier to avoid as you can use the set (or a suitably sized monkey tool) to tap the mating faces of the hinge plate together and the rivet will keep them in place till you can give it that first, good setting blow. Otherwise the trick is to keep heavy downward pressure on the uppermost tong as you initially set the rivet to ensure the mating faces are tight up against one another until everything locks. Once its locked in place you can ease off the pressure and go on to dome the head with the snap, free up the reins etc etc. If you're doing all that already and are still having an issue then look at the punched holes themselves, are they tapered or drifted? In what orientation are the tapers if not? Hour glass or barrel? One is likely to 'lock' far better than the other during that critical first setting blow. Hope that makes sense.
@verdigrissirgidrev4152
@verdigrissirgidrev4152 4 года назад
My riveting process: 1 calculate rivet length. 2 use the wrong reign thickness, cut the rivet short due to sloppy marking etc and of course a drift that is slightly too big. 3 rivet the tongs, then notice rivet is too short to hold well, end up arc welding short side to the rein.

I need to make these tools but I’ve taken a page out of Jared Russell’s book he gets his rivet stock gets the end hot locks it in a vise and upsets the head then cuts it off and rivets it. This works well for me only have used it on spatulas though. And you can never have enough fuel for the forge unless you have like 40 tons then maybe that’s overkill. Thanks for sharing I learned a few tricks!
@danielmoss2089

Seems like ball ache but if it works for you. I alway find upsetting in the vise marks the edge of the material you don't want to mark.

Daniel Moss yeah it does leave a flat on the material but that get put into the hole and upset into the piece. It’s a quick and dirty rivet for sure

I always "Ick up a trick or two on every one of your videos. Please don't worry about any of us getting bored I think we all hope one day to have your command of a hammer. The only thing I would ask is if you can please tell us the alloy you are using and if it is from a coil spring or some other source that helps as well. I am looking forward to your hammer making. I love the design of yours and it seems a lot harder than any of mine. As you tap the anvil, it has Lots of springy bounce to it.

Great video as always Dan, for some reason i have always found it hard riveting, and i can now see the error of my ways. I never start off with the right length of bar stock. Thanks for the video and ideas, will give them all a go, especially the bolt idea.. question do you typically burn the galvanizing off or do you use vin and water?
