How to Forge Tools: Bick

In this video I am forging a bick, also known as a bickern or a bick iron. This tool functions very similar to the horn of the anvil but smaller. This one is forged to fit into the hardy hole of my anvil, but a bick can also be made to mount directly into its own stump, or even a vice.

Nice! If you localize the heat, it won't upset where you don't want it too. I was lazy when I made my bick, and just used an old buggy axle.

Yeah, I thought about cooling the ends to isolate the heat and prevent some of the flaring on the ends, but I didn't want to risk cracking the steel with water since I don't know what type of steel it is.

yeah, the 2.5lb straight peen hammer I used towards the end of the video to do the clean up is the same one I made in my $20 smithing hammer video. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed and good luck with your hammer.

I think that power hammer could rise up further to build up a harder swing.

Also what type of steel did you use for this bick?
@northernforgeblacksmith

The hammer could definitely be designed to have a higher swing for more power, but I my springs can only stretch so far before they deform permanently, and I wanted to work within the parameters of parts I would be able to get locally.

I don't know the exact steel, I work with primarily recycled materials, but I believe this was made with a piece of a hydraulic pin, which I believe are usually made from a medium carbon steel.

Nice bick bro! Do you like your cam powerhammer? Would you make another cam driven one again or a different style altogether. Im working on design for oliver treadle hammer with hardy hole on bottom. Might have to leave some room so i can add a cam to it later down the line. It looks like yours is a pretty capable hammer.

I love my cam hammer, it has allowed me to finish a lot of projects that would probably have otherwise taken too long, and I definitely don't regret it. If I somehow lost all my tools and had to start over, I would probably build another one, but if I was to build another hammer, I would probably use a different design. I actually bought the clay spencer power hammer plans last year, but the parts to build it are still a bit expensive for me right now.

Do you mean my power hammer? Unfortunately I didn't thoroughly document the process when I built it since I wasn't really doing much youtube back then, but I do have a few videos from the process and have a more recent overview video if you want to see how it works and some of the changes I have made from the original design.

Have you tried using a flatter with the power hammer?
@northernforgeblacksmith
@northernforgeblacksmith Год назад
I haven't used a flatter with this power hammer, since the hammer doesn't come down very straight on really tall stock.
