In this video I'm going to show you how I form a 1.5" overhang when I install forms for a concrete patio slab. The formed overhang helps to hide the seam between the bottom of the patio slab and the top of the foundation wall.
Without the formed overhang, when you strip the forms after pouring and finishing the concrete, you'll see where the patio slab sits on top of the concrete wall. If the backfill doesn't cover the seam, then it may not look as nice as you'd like. By overhanging the concrete, the seam is a lot less noticeable and looks a lot better when you don't cover it with backfill.
I have to form up a lot of my concrete pours. This forming technique is just one of the things we do to form patio slabs. If you want to learn more of my advanced forming techniques, check out The Concrete Underground below. Inside there I have a lot of my more advanced training techniques to help you learn how to do concrete work just like I do.

Your spot on over hang is a must the 1.5" is a min and depends on width of material (brick, stone, peel and stick (culture stone) if there is a veneer, which we then allow for a drip to be cast in. Most defiantly the laser level is a must will pay for itself on the first job. Keep these great content videos coming. Merry Christmas to the community of doing it right!!

You should have put a 3/4” chamfer strip where the 2/4 meets the 2/12 to add the finishing touch. Merry Christmas!!

Ha! You beat me to it. That’s exactly what I was gonna say as well. It can give the concrete deck a thinner, more streamlined appearance.

Did a over 4” over hang years ago on a house slab patio. We did it all at once though. House and patios. South Louisiana though. We don’t have frost walls or basements.

I haven’t done any over hangs but I’ve done highway medians where we had to make the median straightedge out of 2x4s at the right shape with the DOT

Mike, I am a big fan of your videos, and the care you take in providing a quality product to your customer and providing education to your viewers. Quick question for you: I live in DC and I recently poured a 3 part stone, 2 part sand, 1 part cement cap over an old coal chute. The pad serve two purposes, being both a stoop for a side door and a seal for the chute. A week after the pour, water is leaching through the pad (~8 inches thick) into the old chute . What would you recommend for sealing it? Thanks! Pat

Been doing concrete for almost a year now and I was trained to hold the 2x4 and just hammer the concrete nail by myself. Then after I just use the Paslode to add the 2x6 or 2x8. Interesting to see how u guys do it. More salaries I guess why I'm doing it hard way

Sometimes I do it that way, If I have too. Usually I just pound stakes into the ground and toenail the 2X4 onto them rather than screwing them to the foundation. It's just a lot faster and easier. Plus, you don't need a hammer drill to strip the forms. Any dude with a hammer can do it.

Love the video. May I ask... have you ever framed anything with a similar overhang but on a rounded patio? I need this. Thanks

You would use something like Azek pvc trim boards 1x4's as long as the bend isn't to hard, then a 1x8 or 1x12 for the outside form.

Would this same process work if I wanted to add 3 concrete steps up to my front porch? The porch itself was poured by professionals but has an overhang and I thought it would like nice if the steps match.

Used plywood instead of 2x12s so we had to run a board along the top and hard kick it using a string line to make sure it was straight. Had to tap with a hammer forever so the prisoners benches wouldn’t have to many bug holes, I’d like to try out that pencil vibrator in cases like that.

Tapcons are expensive. Two duplex nails driven in each hole work just as well, perhaps better. I've seen guys use a duplex with some tie wire.
@joegarcia4424
@joegarcia4424 3 года назад
You can reuse the tapcons.
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb 3 года назад
@@joegarcia4424 But why spend the money in the first place, or the labor to collect them once you've stripped the forms? And tapcons don't hold as well as nails anyway.
@joshlouiselle3741
@joshlouiselle3741 3 года назад
Pinch nail is cheaper than tap cons
@psidvicious
@psidvicious 3 года назад
Are you talking about double 16p nails into the drilled holes or a 16p and a piece of tie wire? If so, you’re right, they do hold good, but you’d have to drive them in all the way, so the 2x12 could sit flat. Then they’d be a lot tougher to strip.
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 3 года назад
We'll use those Tapcon's over and over again too. Probably at least 20 times each.
