My grandfather was a farmer and avid gardener we had all kind of peas, zipper, cream 40s, purple hull. When it was harvest time my grandmother would have us shell the peas and she would turn her kitchen into a canning a freezing production line. She would wash, blanch the peas and cover her table in a sheet and we would help her with the whole process. This is so near and dear to my heart being from South Ga this all I knew growing up. I have a container garden now tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs I just love fresh organic produce.

Ms. Mae Mae, you have taken me back to my childhood. I remember catawba worms and those big leaves. I also played marbles and loved kick ball. Enjoy your channel so much. GOD bless you.

I enjoyed watching you put up your peas! I usually still go out and pick my own . There is a family I know that has a farm and they let me come out and pick as many as I need . I pay them by the 5 gallon bucket full. My husband loves to shell peas so when I get home with them I pour them out on a sheet and we start shelling. You were also talking about catarber worms! My mama and daddy had a catarber worm tree at our home place and I also helped pick them for our fishing trip. Daddy had a box with screen around it that he kept his in! I sure miss them ole days🥰Love you guys❤️🌹🙏🏻

This brought so many sweet memories! My late grandparents would have bags fresh peas they had had frozen. They lived on the farm where they raised my mom and their other children. My cousins and I always spent 2 weeks in the summer visiting them while growing up. Grandmother made everything from scratch. Grandfather raised chickens and pork and beef and we ate food like fresh chicken and eggs. Grandmother's garden had greens, peas, tomatoes, onions, squash, peaches, plums, and herbs. She also had jars of peach and plum preserves. She made homemade biscuits and sometimes gave us Brer Rabbit syrup. They have both gone to be with the Lord. My mom and her siblings still own the farm and the family every few years gather there to remember them. However, it just ain't the same without them.

Mae I am glad you did this video I can remember my Mother washing peas and greens but I never saw her do this for the freezer we didn’t have that big of a freezer, but my Aunt had a farm up in South Western Oklahoma and she always had a big garden and canned and froze things up for us if we got a chance to go see her, my Mother and Dad were in business for there self restaurant and drinks and and we’re in business for over 40 years and I had to sell after my Mother died because I was the only one in the family that knew anything about the business, and it was getting hard to find honest people who wanted to work But again thank you for showing me something that I didn’t know about. Sincerely Vannessa G.

I recall when I was growing up, going to the farmers market. My mom would buy 2 bushels of peas. My sisters and I would shell peas until our fingers were purple. Then my mom would blanch them, put them in freezer bags and freeze them. I loved shelling the peas but I hated shucking the corn, afraid a worm would be in it. Looking back, I had a great childhood. Those were the good old days.

Mae Mae, why do we add water to the peas as we put them in the baggie?
@MaeMaesHappyTable
@MaeMaesHappyTable 4 года назад
Kathy Mallory Hey Kathy, that's a good question.... Never one I had ever gave a through to ever ask my mother or step- grandmama, the ones who taught me to do the process I use. But if I had to make a common sense guess I would say... to cut down the possibility of freezer burn.. because of the tenderness of the peas and the long time duration in the freezer. If you research you probably can another reason. But the process we use words great. Thanks for watching and God bless you and your family 🙏🏿😍

Exactly right, Mae Mae. Both of my parents were fisher people. Crappie was their favorite, but bass and perch were also in their fish baskets. Dad would filet the fish by the lake. Mother would take them in the house and run her fingers over the fillets checking for bones and giving them a final trim. They soaked in water overnight. Next day they were packed in milk containers. Back then, milk was sold in half gallon waxy containers. They were covered with fresh water and placed in the freezer. Mother said it would keep the fish fresh and freezer burn free. And it did. Those fish fillets were clean and ready for a fish fry. Delicious memories.

Thank you so much for this video! Your stories and your voice remind me so much of my childhood growing up with my grandmother and great grandmothers in a small town in Texas. Question- if I wanted to cook the peas immediately after buying, would I need to do a pre-boil and dump the water/ foam to get the “green off” before cooking? Thanks again.
